7:00 AM | Nothing too unusual about the next few days...late night and early morning low clouds and fog along the coast give way to partial PM clearing

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Patchy fog early then gradually becoming partly sunny, highs in the low 70’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, breezy, lows in the low 60’s

Wednesday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, near 70

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, fog late, low-to-mid 60’s

Thursday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, near 70

Friday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, near 70

Saturday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, low-to-mid 70’s

Sunday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, low-to-mid 70’s

Discussion

High pressure will remain in control for much of the week. The typical pattern for the week will not be much different from the last several weeks with some late night and early morning coastal fog and low clouds followed by some partial afternoon clearing skies. Temperatures will generally hold in the 70-74 degree range for daily high temperatures through the week.

7:00 AM | Threat for showers and storms early this week then drier, hotter for the 2nd half

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, very warm, chance for a few showers and thunderstorms, highs near 90 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for an evening shower or thunderstorm, mid 60’s for lows

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, very warm, chance for a few showers and thunderstorms, highs in the low 90's

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for an evening shower or thunderstorm, mid 60’s for lows

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, hot, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 90’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, hot, low-to-mid 90’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, hot, low-to-mid 90’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, very warm, maybe a thunderstorm, near 90

Discussion

Moisture-laden subtropical air will continue to stream northward from the Southwest US and this will keep the threat around here for primarily afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms for the next couple of days. For the 2nd half of the week, the moisture will be somewhat cutoff from the Rockies region and it’ll turn drier and hotter around here as a consequence.

7:00 AM | Much of the week will feature highs in the low 70's

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Patchy fog early then gradually becoming partly sunny, highs in the low 70’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, breezy, lows in the low 60’s

Tuesday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, near 70

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, fog late, low-to-mid 60’s

Wednesday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, near 70

Thursday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, near 70

Friday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, low 70's

Saturday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, low 70's

Discussion

High pressure will be close enough today to control the weather scene, but it’ll tend to slide westward beginning tomorrow which could open the door somewhat for monsoonal moisture to produce some clouds around here during the mid-week. Daytime highs for much of the week will climb to or just past the 70 degree mark.

12:00 PM | Very interesting possible early clues about the upcoming winter

Paul Dorian

Discussion

It is never too early to speculate about the weather around here for the upcoming winter and there are some very interesting possible early clues about the prospects. To begin with, when dealing with long-range possibilities, it is generally best to start with a look at the oceans as they have a much higher heat capacity than the atmosphere, and the biggest ocean by far is the Pacific Ocean. A transition is now occurring in the tropical Pacific with respect to sea surface temperatures from La Nina (colder than normal) to El Nino (warmer than normal) and it appears that the upcoming winter will likely feature a “weak-to-moderate” El Nino in that region. This could play a role in the precipitation amounts around here this winter as El Nino patterns tend to produce active sub-tropical jets which, in turn, often lead to enhanced storminess along the Mid-Atlantic coast.

As far as temperatures are concerned, I have been monitoring the evolution of two different long-range forecast models including NOAAs “Climate Forecast System” and the Japanese Meteorological Agency “JAMSTEC” model. Quite interestingly, both of these models are hinting at the prospects of a substantial reversal in temperatures for much of the US during the autumn from above to below normal, and this change to below normal is then predicted by these models to persist into the upcoming winter months.

By combining both the possible El Nino in the tropical Pacific with the below normal model temperature forecasts, one can see the scenario for a colder and stormy winter in the Mid-Atlantic, but it is still very early and the devil is in the details. For example, the prediction of a "weak-to-moderate" El Nino is not necessarily sufficient by itself in determining potential Mid-Atlantic winter weather conditions as experience has shown that its location in the tropical Pacific Ocean is often as critical as its magnitude (ie will it be an eastern-based El Nino or more centrally-based?). Also, another wild card for the upcoming winter lies with the atmospheric pressure patterns over the north Atlantic Ocean which are quite hard to forecast well in advance, and they often have an influence on wintertime temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region. Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the ever evolving oceanic and atmospheric patterns over the next several months.

7:00 AM | Warming trend kicks in this weekend and continues next week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Fog early then gradually becoming mostly sunny, highs in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, patchy fog late, lows near 60 degrees

Saturday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Saturday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, fog late, low 60’s

Sunday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, near 70

Monday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, low 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, low-to-mid 70’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny skies, pleasant, maybe a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 70’s

Discussion

A warming trend will begin this weekend as high pressure builds into the southwestern part of the country. The warming trend will continue into the middle of next week with highs temperatures reaching way up into the 70’s by then. At the same time, southwesterly winds will increase the monsoonal moisture around here early next week and it’s possible that some shower and thunderstorm activity reaches parts of southern California by mid-week.

7:00 AM | Above normal temperatures next few days; threat for PM showers/storms continues

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, hot, windy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs in the low 90’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, windy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, warm, mid-to-upper 60’s for lows

Saturday

Mostly sunny, hot, slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, highs low-to-mid 90's

Saturday Night

Mostly cloudy, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, mild, low 60’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, still hot, good chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 95

Monday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 90's

Tuesday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 90's

Wednesday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 90's

Discussion

The combination of monsoonal moisture and an upper level disturbance just to our north today will continue the threat for PM showers and thunderstorms as temperatures into the 90's. Similar unsettled conditions will occur on both weekend days as a couple of other disturbances move along in the upper atmospheric southwesterly flow of air, but the greatest chance for showers and thunderstorms is likely to be on Sunday. Temperatures will continue to average above normal for the next several days.

7:00 AM | Warming trend begins this weekend and continues into next week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, highs in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, patchy fog late, lows near 60 degrees

Friday

Fog possible early then partly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, fog late, low 60’s

Saturday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Sunday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, low 70’s

Monday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, low-to-mid 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, mid 70’s

Discussion

High pressure will dominate the weather scene around here for the next few days, but there will be the strong possibility for some late night and early morning low clouds and fog; especially, along coastal regions. As has been the case in recent weeks, temperatures will generally average at or slightly below normal until the weekend at which time a warming trend may develop as high pressure builds in aloft.

7:00 AM | Near normal high temperatures for the next several days (near 90 degrees)

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, seasonably warm, slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs near 90 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mild, low 60’s for lows

Friday

Partly sunny, seasonably warm, still a chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs near 90

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, mild, mid 60’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, seasonably warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 90

Sunday

Partly sunny, seasonably warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 90

Monday

Mostly sunny, seasonably warm, near 90

Tuesday

Partly sunny, hot, low 90’s

Discussion

Large high pressure is centered to our southwest this morning and it should move slowly eastward towards the central Plains over the next couple of days. As a result, our wind flow aloft will change from a westerly direction to more of a southwesterly direction which will advance more moisture into the region by later this week and provide us with the threat for more showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will stick close to the normal high of 90 degrees for the next several days.

7:00 AM | Not as hot as recent days and the trend towards more seasonable temperatures will continue into the weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, breezy, quite warm, but not as hot as recent days, chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs near 90 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, cool late, low 60’s for lows

Thursday

Partly sunny, very warm, still a chance for showers and thunderstorms, upper 80’s

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, low 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, very warm, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, near 90

Saturday

Mainly sunny, hot, slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 90

Sunday

Partly sunny, very warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 90

Monday

Partly sunny, very warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 90

Discussion

A weak cool front will slide through northeast Colorado early on Wednesday allowing for slightly cooler temperatures compared to recent days. At the same time moisture will be shifting eastward from western Colorado into eastern Colorado and this will continue the threat for some shower and thunderstorm activity around here. The return to more seasonal temperatures looks like it will last through much of the weekend (normal high for Denver is currently 90 degrees).
