2:30 PM | Tropical Update
Paul Dorian
The tropics are showing more and more signs of life as we gradually approach the climatological peak month (September) of the Atlantic hurricane season. So far, while there have been an above-normal number of named storms (7), none of them have actually reached hurricane status and, thankfully, there has been very little, if any, impact on the US mainland. The current setup features a wave over the central Caribbean as well as a developing wave in the eastern Atlantic. The eastern Atlantic wave bears close watching as there are some indications that it could very well move towards the US east coast by the end of next week as a hurricane. It appears quite likely that the Atlantic tropical season may be consistently in the news beginning next week and lasting into early October as above-normal sea surface temperatures from just off the African west coast to the Gulf of Mexico continue to help enhance tropical storm development.
