Brutal cold continues for the next couple of days in the Mid-Atlantic region with single digits possible late tonight across many of the suburbs of Philly and NYC and low teens at best in other areas. There are two systems to deal with over the next few days with respect to snowfall with the first one arriving later tomorrow night. This system is rather weak, but it can cause numerous snow showers later tomorrow night from southern Pennsylvania down across northern Maryland, northern Virginia, and the entire DC metro region. A quick coating to an inch is possible from this system later tomorrow night between Philly and DC with the greatest chance south of the PA/MD border. A more important system will approach the Mid-Atlantic region on Friday and it looks like whatever falls from this storm will be in the form of snow in the DC-to-NYC corridor. While there is pretty good confidence in the precipitation type for this late week system (i.e. snow), there still are some questions about precipitation amounts. Currently, the best bet is to expect a moderate snowfall Friday afternoon and evening with accumulations on the order of a few inches to several inches. I’ll fine-tune that accumulation forecast as the week progresses. There is lots of energy over the Pacific Ocean that will play a crucial role in the formation of this storm and it is yet to be modeled well by the computer forecast models. It stays very cold behind the system during the upcoming weekend.
