In an unprecedented fashion, “Blizzard Warnings” have been issued by NOAA from far eastern Texas to southern Louisiana where winds are expected to gusts past 35 mph and there can be several inches of accumulating snow. Map courtesy NOAA

Overview

A rare weather event has begun across the Gulf coast that will result in accumulating snow and ice in unusual places such as Houston (TX), New Orleans (LA), Tallahassee (FL), and Myrtle Beach (SC). NOAA has issued “Winter Storm Warnings” all the way from Texas to the Carolinas and - in an unprecedented fashion - even “Blizzard Warnings” have been issued from far eastern Texas to southern Louisiana. In this entire stretch of the southern US, there can be at least a few inches of snow by early Wednesday and an ice glaze may be included in the mix as well in many areas. By this evening, the accumulating snow can make it’s way as far north and east as southeastern Virginia and there can even be a touch of snow along the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Arctic air that has enveloped the nation from coast-to-coast is the main contributor to this very wintry and rare weather event for the southern US.

Details

The 9AM observations on Tuesday are rather amazing along the Gulf coast with, for example, light snow being reported at places like Houston, Texas (28 degrees), Lake Charles, Louisiana (26 degrees), and Mobile, Alabama (27 degrees). This rare wintry weather event across the southern US will spread farther east later today with, for example, Tallahassee, Florida likely to feature a mix of snow and ice later today and tonight and small accumulations are on the table. By early tonight, the snow and ice will spread to the Southeast US coastal cities of, for example, Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina and small accumulations are likely in those areas as well.

NOAA has issued “Winter Storm Warnings” all the way from Texas to the Carolinas and, perhaps the most amazing of all, are the “Blizzard Warnings” that are now in effect from far eastern Texas to southern Louisiana. In Lake Charles, Louisiana, as an example, winds are expected to climb past 35 mph and several inches of snow are on the table during this rare winter event for the southern US. In terms of this system impact farther north up the eastern seaboard, it appears there can be some snow accumulations across portions of southeastern Virginia, where, as an example, Virginia Beach will get in on some of the action later today and tonight. There is even a chance that some snow shower activity makes it as far north and east as the immediate DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor late in the day and early tonight and from there eastward to the Delmarva Peninsula and to coastal New Jersey.

Near record or record lows of daily low temperatures were seen earlier this morning extending from coast-to-coast as Arctic air has overspread the entire nation. Map courtesy “coolwx.com”.
