7:00 AM | Low pressure near the coast today keeps us cloudy, damp and very cool for late May; holiday weekend to start off at downright cold levels, but will end quite warm

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Cloudy, very cool with occasional showers, highs only reaching the lower 60’s (normal high is now 76 degrees at DCA)

Tonight

Chance for an early evening shower then becoming partly cloudy, quite cool, lows by morning in the upper 40's

Friday

Partly-to-mostly sunny, breezy, comfortable, cannot rule out a shower, mid 70’s

Friday Night

Mainly clear and downright cold for this time of year, lower 40's

Saturday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, low-to-mid 70’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, noticeably warmer, low-to-mid 80’s

Monday

Mainly cloudy, quite warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy, very warm, chance for more showers and thunderstorms, near 90 degrees

Discussion

Low pressure will pass just to our south and east later today and it will generate occasional showers in the local region right through the afternoon. The clouds and rainfall from this coastal low pressure system will help to confine temperatures to unusually cool levels for this time of year. This system moves away late tonight and the end of the work week and the beginning of the holiday weekend will stay cool for this time of year. In fact, the upcoming holiday weekend could start off near record cold levels in much of the Mid-Atlantic region.

By Sunday, however, temperatures will become noticeably higher and then Monday will bring a threat for showers and thunderstorms from a frontal system and it'll turn quite warm. That same front will combine with a second front on Tuesday of next week to continue our threat for showers and thunderstorms along with continued quite warm conditions.

7:00 Am | Another crisp, cool air mass...low pressure generates showers on Thursday

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny, breezy, cooler and less humid, highs in the comfortable low-to-mid 70’s

Tonight

Becoming mostly cloudy, quite cool, possible showers towards morning, lows not far from 50 degrees

Thursday

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, evening showers possible, low 50’s

Friday

Mainly sunny, pleasantly warm, mid-to-upper 70’s

Saturday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, mid 70’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, warmer, low-to-mid 80’s

Monday

Mainly cloudy, very warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, upper 80’s

Discussion

A strong cool front passed through the region late yesterday and NW winds behind the front have ushered in another cool, crisp air mass for this time of year. The refreshingly cool air will stick around into the weekend and tonight’s overnight lows should drop to near 50 degrees in many suburban locations north and west of the District.

Tomorrow will feature weak low pressure passing by just to our south and it should come close enough to produce showers in the local region before quickly departing early Friday. Nice weather will return for the end of the work week and for the beginning of the holiday weekend, and then noticeably warmer conditions are likely to return on Sunday and Monday. By Monday, the threat for showers and thunderstorms returns to the forecast and that threat is likely to continue on Tuesday as well.

7:00 AM | Another stretch of refreshingly cool weather coming for the second half of the week

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy skies today, still quite warm and humid with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms, highs in the mid 80’s

Tonight

Scattered evening showers and thunderstorms then becoming partly cloudy, breezy and turning cooler, late night lows in the upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, breezy, cooler and less humid, low-to-mid 70’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, quite chilly, upper 40’s

Thursday

Partly sunny, pleasantly cool, cannot rule out a shower or two, near 70 degrees

Friday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, mid 70’s

Saturday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, mid 70’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, warmer, low 80’s

Discussion

In a very similar pattern to last week, early week inclement weather will be swept away by a strong cool front and the period stretching from Wednesday through Friday will feature refreshingly cool and dry air for this time of year. After soaking rain last night in much of the Mid-Atlantic region, scattered afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms will accompany a cool frontal passage and then NW breezes will pick up late tonight and continue on Wednesday bringing with them a comfortably cool and less humid air mass for the second half of the week. While still a few days way, right now it looks like the nice weather pattern may continue through much of the upcoming holiday weekend with dry conditions likely through at least Sunday and increasingly warmer temperatures.

7:00 AM | Transition day to an unsettled weekend with much warmer and more humid conditions

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

More clouds than sun, still rather comfortable, highs in the mid 70’s

Tonight

Mainly cloudy, much milder than recent nights, becoming muggy with a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, lows in the lower 60’s

Saturday

More clouds than sun, noticeably warmer and more humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, but much of the time will be rain-free, mid 80’s

Saturday Night

Mainly cloudy, mild, muggy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 60’s

Sunday

More clouds than sun, very warm and rather humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, but much of the time will be rain-free, mid-to-upper 80’s

Monday

Mainly cloudy, not quite as warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80's

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy, mild, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 80 degrees

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, low-to-mid 70’s

Discussion

High pressure will shift off the Northeast US coastline today and this will open the door for some unsettled weather conditions beginning tonight and continuing into early next week. Today will remain quite comfortable for this time of year, but it’ll turn noticeably warmer tomorrow along with an increase in humidity levels. Showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight and on each weekend day, but much of the time will be rain-free and neither day this weekend will be a washout. A frontal system will continue the threat for showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday and this will be followed by another cool shot of air for the mid-week.

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny, pleasant, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Mainly clear, cool, lows near 50 degrees

Friday

Partly sunny, still pretty comfortable, slight chance for showers late in the day, mid 70’s

Friday Night

Mainly cloudy, mild, becoming muggy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, upper 50’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, noticeably warmer, chance for showers and thunderstorms, but much of the time will be rain-free, mid 80’s

Partly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, but much of the time will be rain-free, mid-to-upper 80’s

Monday

Partly sunny, not as warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 80 degrees

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy, mild, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 80 degrees

Discussion

A chilly start to the day with temperatures as a sprawling Canadian high pressure system continues to control our weather pattern in the Mid-Atlantic region. We’ll enjoy another very pleasant day thanks to this high pressure system, but it’ll shift off the Northeast US coastline on Friday and that will open the door for some unsettled weekend weather conditions. It’ll also turn much warmer this weekend and there will an increase in humidity leading to scattered showers and thunderstorms, but neither day will be a washout.

7:00 AM | Refreshing change with tonight's lows dropping into the 40's in most suburban locations

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

A mix of clouds and sun, refreshing breeze, noticeably cooler and less humid than yesterday, highs not far from 70 degrees

Tonight

Mainly clear, downright chilly, mid 40’s by early morning

Thursday

Mainly sunny, nice, near 70 degrees

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, chilly, upper 40's

Friday

Increasing clouds, still pretty comfortable, mid 70’s; chance for showers at night

Saturday

Mainly cloudy, warmer, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80's

Monday

Partly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 80 degrees

Discussion

A cool frontal passage has ushered in cooler and less humid air and the rest of the work week will feature very pleasant weather for this time of year. After highs are generally confined to the 60’s this afternoon, temperatures late tonight should bottom out in the 40’s in most suburban locations as this fresh, chilly air mass settles into the area. Clouds will increase on Friday and then the weekend will become somewhat unsettled as it turns warmer and more humid with the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. The weekend does not, however, look like a total washout.

7:00 AM | Refreshing change starting tomorrow...overnight lows should drop to the mid 40's by early Thursday morning

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly-to-mostly sunny, very warm and humid, becoming windy with only a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, highs in the upper 80’s

Tonight

Becoming mostly clear, quite breezy and turning noticeably cooler late, lows by morning in the low-to-mid 50’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, breezy, noticeably cooler and less humid, upper 60’s

Wednesday Night

Mainly clear, chilly, mid 40’s

Thursday

Mainly sunny, nice, low 70's

Friday

Increasing clouds, comfortable, chance for showers at night, mid 70’s

Saturday

Mainly cloudy, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorm, low 80's

Sunday

Mainly cloudy, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorm, near 80 degrees

Discussion

A cool front will arrive this evening and its passage will usher in big changes for the second half of the work week. After another day with unusual warmth and humidity and nothing more than an isolated shower, NW breezes will kick in later today and tonight and this new flow of air will bring noticeably lower temperatures and humidity values to the Mid-Atlantic region over the next 24 hours. In fact, it is quite likely that overnight low temperatures drop into the mid 40’s by the time early Thursday morning rolls around in suburban locations. Clouds will increase on Friday and the weekend is looking somewhat unsettled.

7:00 AM | Approaching cool front and the remains of Tropical Storm Ana give us a better chance for showers and storms

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Patchy fog early; otherwise, mainly cloudy, quite warm and humid, increasing chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs in the low-to-mid 80’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for showers and thunderstorms, patchy fog possible late, lows near 65 degrees

Tuesday

Partly sunny, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs in the mid-to-upper 80’s

Tuesday Night

Partly cloudy, turning cooler late, mid 50’s by morning

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, breezy, noticeably cooler and less humid, near 70 degrees

Thursday

Mainly sunny, nice, low 70’s

Friday

Partly sunny, pleasant, low 70’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, warm, maybe a shower or thunderstorm, mid 70’s

Discussion

It's been a struggle to get significant rain recently, but an approaching cool front from the northwest and the spinning remains of Tropical Storm Ana to the south will increase the odds for showers and thunderstorms later today, but certainly, it is not a guarantee that all areas get hit. It'll remain quite humid through tomorrow and temperatures may climb to the warmest levels so far this season on Tuesday afternoon - perhaps reaching the upper 80's. Big changes are due, however, for the second half of the week with refreshing air pushing in for the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday time period. We should even see overnight low temperatures in the 40's later this week following the passage of a cool front.

6:00 AM | Summer-like weekend with warmth and humidity...sub-tropical Ana forms off the Southeast US coastline

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly sunny skies, quite warm, highs in the low-to-mid 80's

Tonight

Partly cloudy, mild, a shower possible late along with patchy fog, lows near 60 degrees

Saturday

Patchy fog early; otherwise, partly sunny skies, quite warm, rather humid, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low 80’s

Saturday Night

Possible shower or thunderstorm early; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, mild, patchy fog late, low-to-mid 60’s for overnight low temperatures

Sunday

Patchy fog early; otherwise, more clouds than sun, quite warm, rather humid, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, mid 80’s

Monday

Patchy fog possible early; otherwise, partly sunny skies, quite warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, quite warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, breezy, noticeably cooler and less humid, low-to-mid 70’s

Discussion

A summer-like weekend is in store for the Mid-Atlantic region with warmth and noticeable humidity. The higher humidity values will have three effects on our weekend weather: 1) expect some clouds on each day 2) there will be a daily threat for a shower or thunderstorm and 3) patchy late night and early morning fog will likely form. By Monday, an approaching cool front will increase the odds for showers and thunderstorms and the summer-like warmth and humidity will persist. Cooler, less humid air should follow the frontal system by the middle of next week.

Elsewhere this weekend, while the Mid-Atlantic is warm and humid, the Rockies and Northern Plains will experience cold conditions and accumulating snow. The clash of cold air across the western US with the warm and humid air in the eastern US, will likely result in severe weather for the central Plains this weekend from Texas to Kansas. Meanwhile, Subtropical Storm Ana has formed off the southern Atlantic coast of the United States - a "home-grown" type of tropical storm - making it the first named tropical system of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season (2015 Tropical Outlook: http://vencoreweather.com/2015/05/05/1000-am-2015-tropical-and-mid-atlantic-summertime-outlooks/).

6:00 AM | Nice weather to close out the work week...summer-like weekend coming

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, nice, highs near 80 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, mild, patchy fog possible late, lows near 60 degrees

Friday

Partly sunny, warm, near 80 degrees

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, maybe a shower late, near 60 degrees

Saturday

Partly sunny, quite warm, cannot rule out a couple of shower and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80’s

Sunday

Patchy fog possible early; otherwise, partly sunny, quite warm, chance for a couple of shower and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Monday

Patchy fog possible early; otherwise, partly sunny, quite warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Tuesday

Patchy fog possible early; otherwise, partly sunny, quite warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80’s

Discussion

High pressure builds into the region today and we’ll experience relatively decent weather for the next couple of days as we close out the work week. The weekend is shaping up to be rather summer-like with high temperatures in the 80's and there will be a noticeable increase in humidity. The increase in moisture content will generate some clouds on each weekend day and help produce the chance for a daily shower or thunderstorm. In addition, late night and early morning patchy fog may become an issue during the weekend and into the early part of next week.

Elsewhere, while the Mid-Atlantic region is featuring summer-like weather this weekend, the Rockies and Northern Plains will cool down dramatically - Denver, Colorado, for example, could actually receive accumulating snow. This clash of cold air in the western US and warm, humid air in the East will also likely lead to an outbreak of severe weather across the Plains.
