Discussion

High pressure will try to push into our region today from the north, but yesterday’s frontal system has stalled out rather close by. As a result, it’ll remain unsettled today and Thursday with plenty of clouds and more showers in the area. Temperatures yesterday were held to unusually cool levels in the Northeast US by an ocean flow with Reagan Airport's high peaking at 72 degrees early in the day, but then temperatures fell as the day progressed. Boston, MA had its coldest "2nd of June" ever recorded with a high of only 49 degrees. Looking ahead, another frontal system will approach the region late Friday into Saturday and, while there can be a shower or thunderstorm on Saturday, the weekend should turn out to be pretty decent.

7:00 AM | Lingering showers today and quite cool...unsettled conditions for the second half of the week

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Tonight

Evening showers possible, maybe a thunderstorm; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, cool, lows in the lower 60's

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, still cool, cannot rule out a few showers, near 70 degrees

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for a shower or two, near 60 degrees

Thursday

Mainly cloudy skies, pleasantly cool, cannot rule out a few more showers, low 70’s

Friday

Mainly cloudy skies, warmer, cannot rule out a few showers any maybe a thunderstorm, near 80 degrees

Saturday

Mostly cloudy skies, warm, chance for showers and maybe a thunderstorm, low 80’s

Sunday

Mainly cloudy skies, not as warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 70's

Discussion

The frontal system that is grudgingly pushing through the I-95 corridor will finally pull off the east coast by tonight. As a result, lingering showers are likely today and it'll stay unusually cool with a low-level ocean flow of air. While the second half of the week will be quieter than the beginning of the week, there will be enough instability in the atmosphere to generate a few showers each day as we head into the weekend or even perhaps a thunderstorm.

7:00 AM | *More heavy rain and possible flash flooding*

Mostly cloudy, still quite warm with additional showers and thunderstorms, some of the rain will be heavy at times with possible flash flooding, highs in the low-to-mid 80’s

Tonight

Showers and thunderstorms likely, some of the rain will be heavy at times with possible flash flooding, mild, lows in the mid 60’s

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy skies, cooler with lingering showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 70’s

Tuesday Night

Evening showers and thunderstorms possible; otherwise, mostly cloudy, cool, near 60 degrees

Wednesday

Partly sunny skies, comfortable, cannot rule out a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 70’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy skies, pleasant, showers possible, maybe a thunderstorm, mid-to-upper 70’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy skies, a bit warmer, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Saturday

Partly sunny skies, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80’s

Discussion

Waves of low pressure are riding along a frontal boundary zone that is slowly working its way through our area. As a result, in the transition to a cooler weather pattern, showers and thunderstorms will continue into Tuesday and some of the rain will be heavy at times with possible flash flooding. Most locations along the I-95 corridor from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC will see an additional 1.50 to 3.00 inches of rainfall in the next 24 hours or so on top of last night's soaking rains with localized amounts of 4+ inches possible. The second half of the work week will feature some improvement and pretty comfortable temperatures, but a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled on any day between Wednesday and Friday.

7:00 AM | Weekend showers and thunderstorms to usher in noticeable relief for early next week...some of the rain from Sunday into Monday can be heavy at times

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly sunny skies, continued warm, but not quite as humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms primarily west of the District, highs in the mid-to-upper 80’s

Tonight

An evening shower or thunderstorm possible; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, quite mild, lows in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Saturday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and more humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms late in the day, upper 80’s

Saturday Night

Showers and thunderstorms possible, mild, upper 60’s

Sunday

Mostly cloudy skies, not as warm, showers likely and possible thunderstorms, some of the rain can be heavy at times, low 80’s

Monday

Mostly cloudy skies, noticeably cooler, showers likely and some of the rain can be heavy, upper 60’s

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy skies, still cool, chance for showers, near 70 degrees

Wednesday

Partly sunny skies, comfortable, mid 70’s

Discussion

High pressure will re-establish itself off the east coast today into Saturday and this will continue our warm weather pattern, but the humidity has dropped somewhat in the overnight hours. A strong cool front will move slowly across the area from Sunday into Monday bringing with it showers and thunderstorms and some of the rain can be heavy at times. Once this front clears the region, high pressure over southeastern Canada will promote an easterly flow of air in the Mid-Atlantic and it’ll turn much cooler as a result on Monday and Tuesday. In fact, temperatures are likely to be confined to the 60’s for highs on both of those days in much of the I-95 corridor.

7:00 AM | Still unsettled through tomorrow, and then another solid band of showers and thunderstorms coming this weekend...weekend frontal passage to bring much relief for early next week

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, still the chance for showers and thunderstorms, highs in the upper 80’s

Tonight

Evening showers and thunderstorms possible; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, quite mild, lows in the upper 60’s

Friday

Partly sunny skies, quite warm and humid, chance continues for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Friday Night

Chance for an evening shower or thunderstorm; otherwise, mainly cloudy skies, mild, mid-to-upper 60’s

Saturday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, upper 80’s, chance for showers and thunderstorms late in the day and at night

Sunday

Mostly cloudy skies, not quite as warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Monday

Mostly cloudy skies, cooler, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 70 degrees

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy skies, still cool, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 70 degrees

Discussion

A weakening cool frontal system approached the region yesterday and it will stall out in the area today while continuing to dissipate. This frontal boundary zone - albeit on the weak side - will still generate enough instability in the atmosphere to continue the threat for showers and thunderstorms right into the weekend. Another frontal system - a much more significant cool front - will arrive late Saturday night/Sunday and with it will come a solid band of showers and thunderstorms. Following this weekend frontal passage, there will be much in the way of relief of this warmth and humidity for later Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. In fact, temperatures could hold in the 60's for highs in many parts of the I-95 corridor on Monday and Tuesday as cool high pressure in southeastern Canada takes control.

12:55 PM | Strong-to-severe thunderstorm threat for later today along the I-95 corridor

Paul Dorian

Discussion

Latest radar (above) shows an impressive line of thunderstorms forming from central Pennsylvania to western Maryland in a pre-frontal trough of low pressure. Skies have partially cleared along the I-95 corridor from the morning low cloud deck and this will allow for afternoon de-stabilization of the atmosphere with increasing low-level heating. A high-resolution computer forecast model (HRRR, below) shows a pretty solid line of thunderstorms at 6pm this evening ranging from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC. Any thunderstorm this afternoon and early evening can contain damaging wind gusts and brief heavy downpours. There are currently no severe thunderstorm watches issued by the National Weather Service for the I-95 corridor, but that could very well change over the next couple of hours. The window of opportunity for any strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity is approximately 2 to 8pm.

7:00 AM | Humid and very warm once again with a shower/storm threat

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mainly cloudy skies, very warm and more humid, an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms, some of the storms can be strong, highs in the mid-to-upper 80’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy with evening showers and thunderstorms possible, some of the storms can be strong, quite mild, lows in the upper 60’s

Thursday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, still a chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Thursday Night

An evening shower or thunderstorm possible; otherwise, mainly cloudy skies, mild, upper 60’s

Friday

Mainly sunny skies, very warm, only a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, mid-to-upper 80’s

Saturday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms late in the day and at night, upper 80’s

Sunday

Mainly cloudy skies, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms early, mid-to-upper 80’s

Monday

Mostly cloudy skies, cooler, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 70's

Discussion

A cool frontal system will approach the region later today and this will enhance our chances for showers and thunderstorms and some of the storms that form can be on the strong side with gusty winds and brief downpours. It’ll stay somewhat unsettled, quite warm and humid for the next couple of days and another shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out on either day. The weekend will feature a solid round of showers and thunderstorms as a cool front arrives in the Mid-Atlantic region late Saturday/early Sunday. The passage of the weekend frontal system should bring us some relief by early next week as far the warmth and humidity is concerned.

7:00 AM | Very warm and humid this week with the threat for showers and storms

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny skies, very warm and more humid, slight chance late for a shower or thunderstorm north and west of DC, highs in the mid-to-upper 80’s

Tonight

Chance for an evening shower or thunderstorm; otherwise, mainly cloudy skies, quite mild, lows in the upper 60’s

Wednesday

Mainly cloudy skies, very warm and humid, better chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Wednesday Night

Showers and thunderstorms possible during the evening hours; otherwise, mainly cloudy skies, mild, near 70 degrees

Thursday

Mainly cloudy skies, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Friday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Saturday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, upper 80’s

Sunday

Partly sunny skies, very warm and humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Discussion

High pressure anchored off the east coast this week will pump in very warm and humid air into the Mid-Atlantic region and high temperatures each day will climb well into the 80’s and perhaps touch the 90 degree mark. While there can be a late day or evening shower or thunderstorm today north and west of the District, a better chance will occur later tomorrow and again on Thursday as a cool front approaches and then stalls in the region. Another cool front will arrive this weekend and that will continue the threat for showers and thunderstorms.

7:00 AM | A cold start to the weekend, but a warm finish and hot next week

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny skies, becoming breezy, still pretty comfortable, cannot rule out a shower or two this afternoon, highs not far from 75 degrees

Tonight

Becoming mainly clear and quite cold for this time of year, lows by morning ranging from the upper 30’s in isolated suburban locations to the mid 40’s in the District

Saturday

Mostly sunny, cool, low 70’s

Saturday Night

Mainly clear and chilly, upper 40’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, becoming noticeably warmer, low 80’s

Monday

Partly sunny, rather hot, chance for showers and thunderstorms late, near 90 degrees

Tuesday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for more showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 90’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny, still hot, chance for more showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 90’s

Discussion

A strong cold front will whip through the Mid-Atlantic region later today and it will usher in a very chilly air mass for the beginning of the long holiday weekend. After a relatively comfortable day today, temperatures will drop sharply overnight – perhaps even bottoming out in the upper 30’s in some isolated suburban locations well north and west of the District. Despite plenty sunshine on Saturday, temperatures will remain at below-normal levels, but then a noticeable warmup will take place for Sunday and especially Monday. While there can be a shower or two associated with today’s frontal passage, the next chance for any significant shower and thunderstorm activity will take place late Monday. That threat for showers and thunderstorms will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday as well and temperatures on those two days should climb into the 90's.
