Discussion

Yesterday's soaking rainfall has ushered in a pattern change and the next several days will be at or below normal in the Mid-Atlantic region as we head into Thanksgiving week. Noticeably cooler air has moved into the region as we end the work week and the coldest air mass since last April will push in for Sunday and Monday. Slow moderation in temperatures are likely next Tuesday and Wednesday and the weather should be quite favorable for traveling with dry conditions in much of the eastern US. Milder conditions are likely late next week and weekend including on Turkey Day when temperatures should climb well up into the 50's before the arrival of more cold air at the end of the month or early in the new month of December.

Elsewhere, the first snowstorm of the season will hit the Upper Midwest this weekend. The region from Madison, Wisconsin to Detroit, Michigan will receive accumulating snow and Chicago, Illinois could end up with its biggest "November" snowstorm ever on the order of 6-12 inches. This same storm will pound parts of the central Plains during the next 12-24 hours with some significant snowfall including, for example, much of the state of Iowa.

Discussion

A strong cold front is pushing through the area today and it’ll generate occasional showers in the Mid-Atlantic region and perhaps even an isolated thunderstorm or two. Colder air pushes in for the end of the work week following today’s frontal passage and then even colder air will arrive on Sunday behind a mid-weekend secondary cold frontal passage. In fact, Sunday promises to be the coldest day of the season so far in the Mid-Atlantic region and there will be a noticeable NW wind to make it feel even colder than the actual air temperatures. The early season unusual chill will continue on Monday as well to begin the new work week.

Thursday Night

Becoming partly cloudy, breezy, turning colder late, low 40’s

Saturday

Mainly sunny, breezy, colder, near 50 degrees

Sunday

Partly sunny, windy, downright cold, mid 40’s

Monday

Partly sunny, still quite cold, mid-to-upper 40’s

Discussion

Milder air will push back into the Mid-Atlantic region later today as winds shift direction from the east to the south-to-southwest. A few showers are possible later today and early tonight with the return of the milder air and then more significant rainfall is coming late tonight and on Thursday as a strong cold front reaches the I-95 corridor. The passage of that initial cold frontal system and a secondary weekend cold front will produce progressively colder weather around here from Friday into Sunday. In fact, Sunday should turn out to be the coldest day of the season so far and there will be a strong NW wind to make it feel even colder.

7:00 AM | Back door cold front shaves 10 degrees off today's temperatures

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, breezy, cooler, highs in the upper 50’s

Tonight

Mainly cloudy, chilly, lows in the upper 40’s

Wednesday

Mainly cloudy, becoming breezy, milder, chance for a few showers, low 60’s

Wednesday Night

Mainly cloudy, windy, mild, showers likely and some of the rain can be heavy, upper 50’s

Thursday

Cloudy, windy and still mild, periods of rain, some of the rain can be heavy at times, maybe a thunderstorm, mid-to-upper 60’s

Friday

Mainly sunny, breezy, cooler, mid 50’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, even cooler, near 50 degrees

Sunday

Partly sunny, windy, cold, mid 40's

Discussion

A back door cold front has slipped through the region and temperatures today will be some ten degrees cooler than yesterday along with an E-NE wind. Milder air will push back into the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday as wind direction changes to south-to-southwest. A few showers are possible late Wednesday and Wednesday night with the return of the milder air, and then more significant rainfall is expected on Thursday associated with a cold frontal system. The passage of that initial cold frontal system and a secondary cold front during the weekend will set us up for progresively colder weather between Friday and Sunday. Elsewhere, another snowstorm hit the Denver, CO region yesterday with as much as 10 inches of snow and tornadoes broke out in the central Plains in the warm sector of a strong storm system.

7:00 AM | Heavy rain event likely on Thursday...colder weather pattern sets up after this event for the last ten days of November

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Sunny, milder, highs in the mid 60’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, chilly, lows near 40 degrees

Tuesday

Partly sunny, cooler, upper 50’s

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, maybe a shower late, upper 40’s

Wednesday

Mainly cloudy, milder, becoming breezy, chance of showers, mid 60’s

Thursday

Cloudy, breezy and mild with periods of rain, some of the rain will be heavy, near 65 degrees

Friday

Partly sunny, cooler, mid-to-upper 50’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, chilly, low 50’s

Discussion

After a cool weekend, milder air will return to the Mid-Atlantic region to start the work week, but a cold front from the north will temporarily set us back on Tuesday with about a five-to-ten degree drop in high temperatures from later today to tomorrow afternoon. A warm front will arrive in the region on Wednesday perhaps accompanied by a few showers and then a strong cold front pushes in by Thursday. That second frontal system is not only likely to trigger a heavy rain event around here on Thursday, but also a substantial change in the overall weather pattern to noticeably colder than its been for at least the last ten days of the month.

7:00 AM | Windy and chilly today...even colder tomorrow

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

A mix of clouds and sun, windy and cooler than recent days, highs in the upper 50’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, windy, colder, lows in the mid 30’s

Saturday

Windy and cold with a mix of clouds and sun, temperatures will struggle to reach the 50 degree mark

Saturday Night

Mainly clear, breezy, cold, low 30’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, still cool, but not nearly as windy, upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, milder, near 60 degrees

Tuesday

Partly sunny, mild, near 60 degrees

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for showers late, mid 60’s

Discussion

A cold frontal system passed through the region in the overnight hours and a much cooler air mass has pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region compared to previous days. Winds will be quite strong today and temperatures will generally be confined to the 50’s this afternoon along with a mix of clouds and sun. A secondary cold front will slide through tonight and Saturday promises to be the coldest day of this cold air outbreak. In fact, high temperatures on Saturday will struggle to reach the 50 degree mark in the DC metro region and the winds will continue to whip along out of the W-NW - not a good day to rake leaves. Much calmer conditions are likely on Sunday, but it’ll stay quite cool despite plenty of sunshine. Milder air returns to the Mid-Atlantic region for the early part of next week.

7:00 AM | Showers today associated with a cold front...windy and progressively colder on Friday and Saturday

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, mild, occasional showers primarily during the morning hours, maybe even an isolated thunderstorm, highs near 60 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, windy, noticeably cooler late, lows in the low-to-mid 40’s

Friday

A mix of sun and clouds, windy and cooler, upper 50’s

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, windy, colder, mid-to-upper 30’s

Saturday

Windy and cold despite plenty of sunshine, temperatures struggle to reach the 50 degree mark

Sunday

Mostly sunny, still quite cool, but not nearly as windy, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, milder, near 60 degrees

Tuesday

Partly sunny, mild, near 60 degrees

Discussion

"Windy" will become the main weather word to use over the next couple of days. A cold frontal system will approach the region today and it will generate showers for the DC metro region primarily during the morning hours - maybe even an isolated thunderstorm. It’ll turn windy and much cooler on Friday, but then a secondary cold front will usher in even colder air for Saturday. In fact, Saturday should turn out to be a windy and downright cold day despite some sunshine with temperatures well below normal for this time of year. It’ll stay quite cool on Sunday, but calmer conditions are expected to close out the weekend and then milder weather returns early next week.

Today

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool, lows in the mid-to-upper 40’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, mild, occasional showers, maybe even a thunderstorm, near 60 degrees

Thursday Night

Becoming partly cloudy, breezy, noticeably cooler late, low-to-mid 40’s

Saturday

Windy and cold despite plenty of sunshine, low 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, still quite breezy and cool, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, not as cool, near 60 degrees

Discussion

High pressure will re-establish itself in the region today, but it will not stick around for too long. Another cold frontal system will approach the region on Thursday and it should generate more rain for the I-95 corridor. Cooler air will follow the frontal system to close out the work week on Friday and there will be a stiff W-NW wind. A secondary cold front will pass through the region on Friday night and it will usher in even colder air for the upcoming weekend and the strong winds will continue into Sunday. Elsewhere today, a powerful storm will bring cold and accumulating snow to parts of the west and central US (e.g., Colorado to Nebraska) and severe weather will be possible in the storm's warm flank across the Midwest and Ohio Valley.

7:00 AM | Coastal low generates rain today into tonight...dry on Wednesday, but more rain arrives on Thursday along with cold frontal system

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Periods of rain or drizzle, some patchy fog around, maybe a thunderstorm later in the day, breezy, mild, highs not far from 60 degrees

Tonight

Rain comes to an end late, breezy, cool, lows in the upper 40’s

Wednesday

Becoming mainly sunny after some early clouds, breezy, mild, low 60’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, maybe a shower towards morning, mid-to-upper 40’s

Thursday

Friday

Mostly sunny, windy, cooler, upper 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, windy, even colder, low 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, still quite breezy and cool, low-to-mid 50’s

Discussion

Low pressure rides northeastward today along the Mid-Atlantic coastline and the result will be periods of rain around here and some of the rain can come down hard at times. The low pressure area pulls away from the coast later tonight and the rain will come to an end along the I-95 corridor. High pressure will briefly re-establish itself in the region on Wednesday (Veterans Day), but then another cold frontal system will generate more rain here on Thursday. Cooler air will follow that frontal system on Friday along with a stiff W-NW wind and then a secondary cold front will usher in even colder air for the weekend.

7:00 AM | Two shots at rain this week...first shot arrives later today and continues into tomorrow night, second shot at rain arrives on Thursday

Paul Dorian

6-Day DC Forecast

Today

Thickening clouds, still on the cool side, chance for rain later this afternoon, highs in the mid-to-upper 50’s

Tonight

Periods of rain, cool, lows not far from 50 degrees

Tuesday

Periods of rain, breezy, milder, near 60 degrees

Tuesday Night

Rain comes to an end, breezy, cool, upper 40’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, breezy, mild, low-to-mid 60’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, mild, showers likely, low-to-mid 60’s

Friday

Becoming mainly sunny, breezy, cooler, upper 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, chilly, low-to-mid 50’s

Discussion

High pressure will get us off to a dry start today, but then low pressure will move north along the coast from later today into tomorrow night bringing us our first round of rain for the week. A second round of rainfall will arrive on Thursday in the form of showers as a cold front approaches the region from the west. That front will usher in a chilly air mass for the end of the week and the upcoming weekend.
