7:00 AM | Weekend looking great!

Paul Dorian

Nothing but good news for the upcoming weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region with plenty of sunshine, light winds, and comfortable temperatures on both days.  Sprawling high pressure across the Upper Midwest and Northeast US will be in control this weekend and we'll have to wait until late Tuesday for the next shot at showers and thunderstorms from the next cold frontal system.  Elsewhere, a very strong upper-level ridge of high pressure is now setting up over the Southwest US and it will bring tremendous heat on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to places like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Death Valley. No excessive heat is in sight for the Mid-Atlantic region.

12:15 PM | *Heavy rain threat and possible strong-to-severe thunderstorms for the DC metro region*

Paul Dorian

First of all, the weekend is still looking nice for the DC metro region.  However, before we reach that time, there is an unusual weather situation for mid-June that is currently unfolding for parts of the Mid-Atlantic region including this area.  As a result of this unfolding weather pattern, occasional rain and thunderstorms are likely from later today through tonight in a northwest-to-southeast corridor extending from southwestern Pennsylvania to the DC metro region.  Some of the rainfall in this corridor will be heavy at times and some of the thunderstorms that form will likely reach strong-to-severe levels.

7:00 Am | *Heavy rain threat for later today and tonight with possible strong thunderstorms...weekend still looking nice*

Paul Dorian

A couple of low pressure systems will move southeastward along a boundary zone and keep it very unsettled around here right into tomorrow.  As a result, there will be occasional rain and thunderstorms - some of the rainfall will be heavy at times; especially, tonight, and some of the thunderstorms can reach strong-to-severe levels. The weekend will likely turn out quite nice thanks to sprawling high pressure across the Upper Midwest and Northeast US.  Elsewhere, low pressure will try to form near or just off the Southeast US coastline this weekend and then head out towards the open ocean.  However, beyond that there are signs that it could actually "back-in" towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline early next week and we'll have to monitor that possibility in the coming days.

7:00 AM | Unsettled weather pattern begins today and continues into Friday...weekend looking nice

Paul Dorian

After a couple of nice and quiet days to start the week, the weather in the Mid-Atlantic region will become unsettled today and for the next couple of days.  An upper-level disturbance combined with a nearby surface low pressure system will bring about an increasing chance for showers and thunderstorms beginning today and extending into the late week time period.  The weekend, however, has a good chance of turning out quite nice as high pressure will sprawl out across the Northeast US.  At the same time, low pressure will try to form near or just off the Southeast coastline, but it looks like the high pressure system will win out around here during both days of the weekend.

Elsewhere, strong upper-level ridging will set up over the Southwest US this weekend and this pattern will bring tremendous heat to portions of that part of the country in the Sunday-Tuesday time period.  For example, Phoenix, Arizona could reach 120 degrees by late in the weekend and Death Valley, California has an outside chance to top out at 130 degrees by early next week - a feat not reached there since 1913.

7:00 AM | Another nice day with comfortable temperatures and humidity

Paul Dorian

Low pressure still persists across southeastern Canada and it is helping to keep temperatures around here pretty close to normal for this time of year.  Later this week, the frontal system that stalled to our south may return to increase the chances for showers and thunderstorms in this region.  The weekend will feature high pressure across the Northeast US and low pressure will try to form near or along the Southeast US coastline.  For now, it appears the high pressure system will win out around here this weekend, but we may have to watch for low pressure to back in towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early next week.

7:00 AM | A nice start to the week

Paul Dorian

A cold front slipped through the region yesterday and an upper-level low now sits over New England as we begin a new work week. This unusually strong system for this time of year will keep it quite breezy around here today and temperatures will remain quite comfortable.  That same cold front that passed through yesterday will stall out to the south of here today, and it could return with showers and thunderstorms during the second half of the week.

7:00 AM | Perhaps hottest weather so far this weekend with another round of showers possible and maybe even isolated strong-to-severe thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

High pressure will move overhead today and we’ll have a nice day to close out the work week.  The weekend will become more active as a warm front pushes through by early tomorrow and then a cold front follows on its heels by later Sunday.  The result will possibly be another round of showers for the DC metro region later tomorrow and early tomorrow night and thunderstorms could also mix into the picture.  It is possible that some of the thunderstorms reach strong-to-severe levels; especially, across northern and northeast sections of Maryland. It’ll turn much hotter and more humid on Saturday - perhaps touching 95 degrees in spots - following the passage of the warm front and temperatures should also reach the 90 degree mark on Sunday as well.

7:00 AM | Couple of nice days to finish the work week...another round of showers this weekend with next strong cold front and possible strong thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

Crisp air in the Mid-Atlantic region this morning and it is being anchored by high pressure to our northwest which will move overhead by later tomorrow.  Another strong cold front will approach the region this weekend and bring along the threat for another round of showers and possible strong thunderstorms.  It'll turn hotter this weekend as well, but somewhat cooler air then returns by early next week following passage of the next cold frontal system.

7:00 AM | *Much cooler today and the atmosphere will become quite unstable resulting in showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two with damaging wind gusts and small hail*

Paul Dorian

A cold front passed through the region late yesterday and today will turn out noticeably cooler along with a stiff breeze.  The atmosphere will become very unstable today given the combination of unusually cold air aloft, the strength of the June sun which will attempt to warm up lower levels of the atmosphere, and an upper-level disturbance.  As a result, instability showers are likely between the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours and there can even be a thunderstorm or two with possible small hail and damaging wind gusts; especially, across the northern suburbs.  The next couple of days look pretty decent, but a little bit on the cool side of normal for this time of year.

6:00 AM | Cold frontal passage later today should spark a few showers and thunderstorms...cooler for the mid-week

Paul Dorian

The next cold front will arrive in the Mid-Atlantic region later today and it could spark a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms.  By tomorrow, noticeably cooler air will return as high pressure builds in from the Upper Midwest.  Given the warm sun this time of year (i.e., warm low-levels) and the cold air expected in the upper atmosphere on Wednesday, there can be enough instability to generate a few showers and perhaps even a thunderstorm.  High pressure will continue to control the weather around here on Thursday and then a warm front will approach by week’s end.
