7:00 AM | *Hurricane Irma on close watch*

Paul Dorian

The remnants of Harvey continue to weaken and push away from the region, but the overall scene in the tropics remains quite active. Hurricane Irma is going to track generally in a westward direction over the next several days and further intensification is likely.  This system will have to be monitored closely in coming days as it could be a big concern for somewhere in the US in about ten days or so.

7:00 AM | As the remains of Harvey push through the region, other tropical threats have emerged

Paul Dorian

As the remnants of Harvey continue to push through the Tennessee Valley, our chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue for another day and some of the storms that form can be on the strong side. This system will then get absorbed into a developing trough over the Northeast and pull away from around here on Friday.  The tropics continue to be quite active and multiple systems may impact the Southeast US over the next couple of weeks. One big concern is Hurricane Irma over the eastern Atlantic as it could become a major player in about ten days or so.  Stay tuned.

7:00 AM | The remnants of Harvey to impact the region

Paul Dorian

Some of the remains of Hurricane Harvey are now impacting the Tennessee Valley and the clouds and occasional rain will keep us cooler than yesterday. Some of the rain can be heavy at times later today and tonight. The circulation center of Harvey will make a second landfall near the TX/LA coastline today and then get absorbed into a northern stream trough of low pressure.  A second tropical system along the Mid-Atlantic coastline will push away and out to sea during the day.

7:00 AM | Heavy rain still piling up in the Deep South

Paul Dorian

The remains of Hurricane Harvey continue to bring significant rainfall to the Deep South and a second tropical system is riding up along the east coast.  This second system is likely to spread some significant rain today  to southeastern Virginia and coastal Delmarva and New Jersey.

7:00 AM | Remains of Harvey continue to pound Texas, Louisiana with additional torrential rainfall

Paul Dorian

The remains of Hurricane Harvey will continue to result in torrential rainfall for parts of Texas and Louisiana with as much as 20 additional inches of rain possible in some sections over the next few days.  Last week’s greatest fears of upwards of 3 or 4 feet of rain is coming to fruition in some parts of the Texas and massive flooding has been the result.  Another tropical system is riding up along the Southeast US coastline today and it’ll actually head to the Outer Banks of North Carolina before turning away from the coast and out to sea.

7:00 AM | Tropics very active with Harvey about to slam Texas and second system near the Florida coastline

Paul Dorian

The tropics are currently very active with Harvey about to slam into Texas and likely generating tremendous amounts of rainfall and a second tropical system churning near Florida.  Harvey is going to slow down to a crawl and perhaps even be “forced” to do a loop over southeast Texas, but eventually its moisture is likely to push to the northeast and it could impact our region by the middle of next week.

7:00 AM | *Active tropics to produce tremendous rainfall amounts in Texas and perhaps Louisiana in coming days*

Paul Dorian

The tropics are currently quite active with one system likely to have a big impact on Texas in coming days and another system sitting right near the NW Bahamas. Both systems will have to be monitored closely over the next several days.  The first system could eventually make a turn to the northeast after likely pounding Texas with some heavy rainfall and the second will probably be a slow-mover and undergo some intensification in coming days right near the Southeast US coastline.

7:00 AM | Tropics are active with two systems to monitor

Paul Dorian

The tropics are currently quite active with one system likely to have a major impact on Texas and Louisiana in coming days with tremendous rainfall potential and another system sitting right near the coast of Florida. Both systems will have to be monitored closely over the next several days. The first system could eventually make a turn to the northeast and impact this area after likely pounding Texas and Louisiana with heavy rainfall. The second wave will probably be a slow-mover and undergo some intensification in coming days right near the Southeast US coastline.

7:00 AM | More comfortable air mass to come for the latter half of the week

Paul Dorian

High pressure ridging will weaken today and a broad trough of low pressure will swing towards the region from the Upper Midwest. The combination of an advancing frontal system and a moist air mass will raise the chances for showers and thunderstorms overnight and especially on Wednesday.  Following the passage of the frontal system, temperatures will trend downward during the second half of the week to quite comfortable levels for late August.

6:30 AM | *Eclipse day has finally arrived and there can be an isolated PM thunderstorm*

Paul Dorian

Eclipse day has finally arrived and there will be a few clouds around this afternoon and also the chance for an isolated PM thunderstorm.  Cumulus clouds are likely to form by afternoon and there is enough instability to support isolated storms, but nothing on a widespread basis. Any storms that form later this afternoon would dissipate this evening.  Special solar eclipse glasses must be worn throughout today's event.
