The remains of Hurricane Harvey will continue to result in torrential rainfall for parts of Texas and Louisiana with as much as 20 additional inches of rain possible in some sections over the next few days. Last week’s greatest fears of upwards of 3 or 4 feet of rain is coming to fruition in some parts of the Texas and massive flooding has been the result. Another tropical system is riding up along the Southeast US coastline today and it’ll actually head to the Outer Banks of North Carolina before turning away from the coast and out to sea.

As Harvey gets ready to pound southern Texas with tremendous rainfall, another tropical system is impacting Florida with lots of rain. This tropical wave will have a better chance for intensification this weekend as it begins a slow churn to the northeast along the Southeast US coastline. Heavy rain from this system which would become “Irma” if it reaches tropical storm status, will likely eventually extend from Florida to coastal North Carolina.

The tropics are currently quite active with one system likely to have a major impact on Texas and Louisiana in coming days with the potential for tremendous flooding rainfall and another system sitting right near the coast of Florida. This nearby tropical system is likely to feature little in the way of intensification over the next day or so, but conditions will become more favorable for strengthening this weekend. If this system reaches tropical storm status – quite a good bet – it’ll become officially named “Irma”. There is the potential for several inches of rain around here over the next few days as a result of this tropical system.

The tropics are currently quite active with one system likely to have a major impact on Texas and Louisiana in coming days with tremendous rainfall and another system sitting just off the southeast coast of Florida. It is this second system that we’ll have to monitor closely in the near term as it will bring deep moisture into Florida and be a slow-mover. Conditions will also become more favorable for intensification over the next few days which could result in heavy rainfall anywhere along the Southeast US coastline from Florida to North Carolina.

Moist flow of air will continue to help contribute to the formation of showers and thunderstorms as we progress through the rest of the week. Any storm that forms over the next few days can generate lots of rainfall in a short period of time given the precipitable water contents of this moist air mass.

Eclipse day has finally arrived and there will be some clouds this afternoon across central Florida, but generally mainly sunny skies. Mid-level trough over the central Gulf will pull away today and a ridge will build over the area. Drier air should work its way into the region today from the east as the ridge builds aloft. Special solar eclipse glasses must be worn throughout today’s event.

Low-level high pressure ridging will continue to influence weather around here as we head into a new work week and a moist southeasterly flow of air into the region will continue. As a result, the threat for showers and thunderstorms will persist through the week.

Low-level high pressure ridging will continue to influence weather around here as we head into the weekend and a moist southeasterly flow of air into the region will continue. As a result, the threat for showers and thunderstorms will persist through the weekend and well into next week. There is a tropical wave (Invest 99L) to monitor over the western Atlantic, but it is very likely to recurve well to our east over the latter part of the weekend and early part of next week.

High pressure ridging off the east coast will continue to promote a moist southeasterly flow of air into the region for the remainder of the week. The best chance for thunderstorms in recent days was at inland locations; however, that threat should climb now along coastal regions.
