7:00 AM | *Chance of rain or drizzle from later today into Thursday afternoon as low pressure forms near the east coast along a frontal boundary zone*

Paul Dorian

A cold frontal system will become nearly stationary today along the eastern seaboard and low pressure will form along the boundary zone. This low pressure will head north along the coast and the result here today will be an increasing chance of rain or drizzle. The chance for rain or drizzle will continue tonight and for much of the day on Thursday. The Mets home opener is scheduled for 1:10 pm on Thursday afternoon and a postponement to Friday is certainly on the table. On the heels of the low pressure system, winds will pick up on Friday and another chilly air mass will push into the Mid-Atlantic region. A couple of disturbances can bring some shower activity to the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday and Monday, but we may sneak in a pretty decent Easter Sunday with relatively mild conditions.

7:00 AM | *An approaching frontal system will increase the chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday*

Paul Dorian

High pressure will lose control of the weather around here today as a frontal system approaches from the west. This front will slow down as it reaches the eastern seaboard and low pressure is likely to form along the frontal boundary zone. The result here will be the chance for showers from later tonight into late Wednesday and then perhaps some steadier rain from tomorrow night into Thursday. On the heels of the low pressure system, winds will pick up at the end of the week and another chilly air mass will push into the Mid-Atlantic region.

7:00 AM | *Chilly and tranquil to start the week with high pressure to our north in control*

Paul Dorian

High pressure to our north expanded into the region on Sunday following the departure of the storm system that produced lots of rainfall around here on Saturday. This high pressure system will control the weather today, but then an approaching frontal system will bring us the chance of showers by mid-week.

On another note, the moon peaked as full earlier today setting the stage for it to reach its new moon phase in two weeks. This next new moon phase will allow for the conditions needed for the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th, when the moon will be in between the sun and earth and thus block the face of the sun from view.

6:45 AM | ***A heavy rain event here from later tonight through Saturday...very windy following the storm***

Paul Dorian

A heavy rain event is headed to the Mid-Atlantic region as strong low pressure pushes to a position just off the coast by early Saturday. The rain will develop later tonight and continue through much of Saturday, heavy at times, with two to as much as four inches on the table by tomorrow evening… watch for localized flooding. On the backside of the storm, N-NW winds will become very strong from late Saturday into Sunday with gusts to 50 mph possible. Chilly air pushes in for Sunday and persistent winds will make it feel even colder than the actual air temperatures.

7:00 AM | **A cold and windy day in the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold front...overnight lows in the 20's...soaking rain late tomorrow night/Saturday**

Paul Dorian

A cold front pushed through the region last night and its passage has unleashed another colder-than-normal air mass to the Mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures today will be confined to the low-to-mid 40’s for afternoon highs and then fall into the mid-to-upper 20’s for overnight lows. After a chilly day on Friday, rain should develop late tomorrow night – perhaps mixed with snow initially - and periods of rain are likely on Saturday and some of it can be heavy. The culprit of this soaking rain event will be strong low pressure that moves to a position just off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early Saturday. Following the storm, another chilly air mass will arrive in the Mid-Atlantic region on Sunday and there will again be a stiff flow of air out of the northwest.

****Another cold shot pushes into the Mid-Atlantic region with overnight lows in the 20's…heavy rain/strong wind event late Friday night/Saturday in Mid-Atlantic...significant snow farther north****

Paul Dorian

An outbreak of colder-than-normal air in the Mid-Atlantic region earlier this week will be followed up by a second shot that arrives on Wednesday night following the passage of a strong cold frontal system. The approaching strong cold front will produce some rain shower activity in the southern Mid-Atlantic region and it is likely to be just cold enough for snow showers and perhaps even heavier snow squalls across upstate Pennsylvania and interior New York State. Following the passage of the front, temperatures will drop into the 20’s late Wednesday night and again late Thursday night…even in the immediate I-95 corridor region.

The cold air mass sticks around into the day on Friday and then attention will turn to a developing low pressure system that is likely to intensify as it pushes to a position just off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early Saturday morning. As a result, a heavy rain event is likely from late Friday night into Saturday from the I-95 corridor region to the coast. In fact, there is the possibility for as much as 2-4 inches of rain during the early part of the weekend in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor…watch out for localized flooding. Farther north, the early weekend storm system can bring substantial snowfall of a foot or more to ski country including upstate New York and much of northern New England. On the back side of the storm, winds can become very strong out of the N-NW with gusts possible up to the 40-50 mph range from late Saturday into Sunday and chilly air will push into the northeastern part of the nation.

7:00 AM | *Turning milder today ahead of the next cold front...colder again on Thursday and Friday*

Paul Dorian

It becomes quite breezy and milder today ahead of the next cold front and there can be an isolated morning shower and a couple of late day and early evening showers as this system arrives. The passage of the cold front will usher in another colder-than-normal air mass to the Mid-Atlantic region for Thursday and Friday. After that, attention will turn to a strong low pressure system that is likely to push to the Mid-Atlantic coastline by the early part of the weekend and generate some rain around here from late Friday night into Saturday…some of the rain can be heavy. Another colder-than-normal air mass will follow that storm system for the second half of the weekend and the early part of next week.

7:00 AM | *Chilly again today and a reinforcing cold shot arrives tomorrow night following the mid-week passage of a cold front*

Paul Dorian

Colder air pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region on Sunday night following the passage of a cold front and temperatures will remain at slightly below-normal levels around here today. It does turn milder on Wednesday ahead of the next cold front and there can be a couple of late day or early evening showers as it arrives. The passage of that next front will usher in another colder-than-normal air mass for Thursday and Friday and then attention will turn to a possible strong low pressure system that can push to the Mid-Atlantic coastline by the early part of the weekend. One final note, spring officially gets underway later tonight at 11:06 PM.

7:00 AM | **Noticeably colder weather this week in the Mid-Atlantic region with overnight temperatures dropping to or below freezing on occasion in many spots**

Paul Dorian

A cold front passed through the region on Sunday and has ushered in colder air to the Mid-Atlantic region and it’ll stick around through much of the week. Temperatures will generally be confined to 50 degrees or below for afternoon highs during the week and can drop to or slightly below the freezing mark on occasion for overnight lows. Strong low pressure may push towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline by the early part of the weekend…something to be monitored over the next few days.

One final note, spring officially gets underway on Tuesday, March 19th at 11:06 PM.

6:45 AM | **Cold shot coming for Monday through Wednesday and overnight low temperatures can drop to below freezing**

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will pass by to our north today and drags a frontal system through the region perhaps generating a couple of showers, but no significant or long-lasting. It turns slightly cooler for the weekend, but still warmer-than-normal for the middle of March and there will be plenty of sunshine on both days. Sunday will feature quite a breeze as well ahead of the next front. A noticeably colder air mass pushes into the region by early next week and it will limit daily highs to the 40’s from Monday through Wednesday and overnight low temperatures can drop to below freezing.
