The week will start off on the quiet side with high pressure remaining in control leading to more dry conditions and comfortable temperatures around here. Low pressure is intensifying along the Carolina coastline and this system will bring changes to the overall pattern with some beneficial rainfall on the way. The low makes a move inland later tonight in a northwesterly direction and rain is going to push slowly up the east coast. The threat of rain that begins here late tomorrow will stick around for a few days thanks to a blocking pattern in the upper atmosphere and some of the rain that falls in this unsettled stretch can be on the heavy side.

Temperatures will reach the lower 80’s this afternoon – not as high as on Thursday – but the dry conditions will continue as will the risk of wildfire smoke in some areas. Dry, moderately warm weather will continue this weekend although an isolated thunderstorm is possible. Dry weather continues next week with the risk of additional wildfire activity across Colorado.

The remnants of Francine pushed northward on Thursday and has grinded to a halt in the western part of the Tennessee Valley as it is being heavily influenced by strong high pressure ridging stationed over southern Canada. As a result, the tropical moisture associated with Francine will continue to have an influence on our weather with a continuing chance of showers and thunderstorms...some of the rain can be heavy at times. In fact, the lingering moisture will keep us unsettled enough this weekend for the chance of showers and thunderstorms on both Saturday and Sunday.

Hurricane Francine made landfall late yesterday in central Louisiana and will bring multiple impacts today and tonight to the Tennessee Valley. There will be occasional showers both today and tonight and possible embedded thunderstorms to go along with cooler and windy conditions with gusts to 40 mph or so. In addition, northern Alabama will be on the right side of the northward-moving tropical storm system, and it is in this sector where isolated tornadoes often develop. Any rain that falls today and tonight can be on the heavy side with flash flooding on the table; especially, in convective rain bands.

Temperatures will soar to near 90 degrees later today and strong southerly winds will increase the risk of wildfire activity in this entrenched dry air mass. The wind will relax some on Friday and temperatures will drop to more seasonable levels with afternoon highs likely in the lower 80’s as we end the work week. The weekend is looking dry and moderately warm with plenty of sunshine expected on both days.
