A wintry week is in store for the Mid-Atlantic region with bitter cold air and multiple snow threats. The first chance of snow comes early tonight as a second push of Arctic air and a weak disturbance generate snow shower activity and there can be a heavier snow squall or two or even a brief period of steady snow. Quick accumulations of a coating to an inch are possible during the early evening hours and there will be some slick road conditions. Once the snow threat is over late tonight, bitter cold Arctic air will pour into the region and the next few days will see highs temperatures in the 20’s despite partial sunshine. Another weak disturbance can cause more snow shower activity in the Mid-Atlantic region late Wednesday and Wednesday night.
The biggest threat of the week comes on Friday as a significant storm will be approaching the Mid-Atlantic region from the Tennessee Valley. While still several days away, it appears that this storm has the potential to produce several inches of snow along the I-95 corridor. From this vantage point, it looks like this storm may have a starting time around late morning or early afternoon on Friday with very early estimates of snow accumulations on the order of 4-8 inches. There is a small chance that sleet and/or freezing rain could mix in at times during this storm in portions of the (southern) Mid-Atlantic and that will have to be monitored as the week progresses, but this could easily turn out to be an all snow event for all from DC to NYC. More very cold air will follow this late week storm for the upcoming weekend, but moderation is likely for awhile early next week.
