Overview
The “boys of summer” are back in town...big-league baseball gets underway on Thursday with home openers in New York City (Yankees vs. Brewers) and Washington, D.C. (Nationals vs Phillies) where there should be loads of sunshine and dry, cool conditions. High pressure will be in control of the weather in the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday resulting in the dry, cool conditions with highs likely in the lower 50’s across New York City and the upper 50’s in the D.C. metro. After a warm frontal passage on Friday night, a major-league warmup is coming on Saturday with 80 degrees on the table in at least parts of the Mid-Atlantic region.
Details
After an often quite cold winter season, the “boys of summer” make a return on Thursday as big-league baseball gets fully underway (there were two official games played in Tokyo last week). The American League Champion New York Yankees open their season at home on Thursday (3pm) against the Milwaukee Brewers and temperatures are likely to be on the cool side despite copious amounts of sunshine. Farther south, the Washington Nationals will play their home opener at 4pm on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies and sunshine there will help to boost afternoon temperatures into the upper 50’s. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles open their 2025 season in Toronto, Canada (3pm) where there will be quite a chill in the air and temperatures doing no better than 50 degrees for afternoon highs...potentially leading to a closed roof for the initial game of the season north of the border.
A touch of summer is possible on Saturday across the Mid-Atlantic region, but reality returns by Tuesday, April 1st, with much colder-than-normal conditions likely to return. Map courtesy NOAA, tropicaltidbits.com
The weather turns slightly milder on Friday in the Mid-Atlantic region with increasing cloudiness and then a warm front moves through on Friday night likely accompanied by some shower activity. Following the passage of the warm front, a major-league warmup is likely for the DC-to-Philly-NYC corridor on Saturday with 80 degrees on the table in the nation’s capital, and the 70’s are likely in Philly and New York City. The cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. are close to a peak and the summer-like conditions on Saturday will no doubt bring about a great chance for peak bloom. This surge in temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region will be muted somewhat on Sunday as clouds will become dominate and help to knock temperatures down some from Saturday’s potential summer-like feel and there will be an increasing chance of showers later in the weekend.

Looking ahead, a strong storm will pass by to the northwest of the Mid-Atlantic’s I-95 corridor region on Monday and it’ll drag a strong cold front through the area. This frontal passage will end the warm spell in a hurry leading to much colder-than-normal conditions by Tuesday, April 1st, and it stays on the chilly side for next Wednesday as well.
Bottom line...it’ll be great to have baseball and the “boys of summer” back up north and it might just be accompanied by a taste of summer on Saturday with 80 degrees on the table in at least parts of the Mid-Atlantic region.
