There will be a rebound in temperatures this afternoon as Arctic high pressure pushes off the east coast and a southwesterly flow of air develops in the Mid-Atlantic region. This transition to milder weather will be accompanied by some rain this morning and there could even be a few ice pellets mixed in across the far northern and western suburbs. By tomorrow afternoon, temperatures should climb into the 70’s; however, it’ll turn much cooler on Sunday and there will be a chance for some rain shower activity.

Arctic high pressure will move directly overhead today and this will result in a dramatic reduction in winds compared to yesterday as the pressure gradient relaxes throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. There will be a rebound in temperatures on Friday as the high pressure system pushes off the east coast and a southwesterly flow of air develops in the region. By Saturday afternoon, temperatures should climb into the 70's; however, it’ll cool down once again on Sunday and Monday and there will be a pretty good chance for some shower activity on both days.

A strong cold front dropped through the region last night and ushered in yet another Arctic air mass which will keep us well below normal for the next couple of days. In addition to the cold, the winds will be quite strong today lowering wind chill values considerably from the actual air temperatures. Low temperatures should fall way down to near 20 degrees in many suburban locations by early tomorrow morning. It stays colder-than-normal on Thursday, but the winds should die down noticeably as Arctic high pressure moves directly overhead from the Ohio Valley and this will relax the pressure gradient. There will be a rebound in temperatures on Friday and then even warmer conditions as we begin the weekend, but a cool down is likely on Sunday and Monday along with an increasing chance of showers.

After a milder day today, a strong cold front will drop through the region from the north in the overnight hours and usher in another Arctic blast for the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result, temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will again be way below normal for this time of year. High pressure will then push off the coast late in the week and we’ll rebound in temperatures on Friday, actually reach warm levels on Saturday, but then we’ll likely cool down again on Sunday as we likely close out the weekend with some rain.

The next system to deal with in the Mid-Atlantic region will be a “clipper” system that drops southeastward from the Great Lakes later today and tonight. This system will feature three different phases that will produce a variety of weather conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region including the threat for accumulating snow on the front and back ends; primarily, in areas north of the PA/MD border. After another cold day on Sunday following the “clipper” system, it’ll turn milder early next, but then another major cold air outbreak arrives at mid-week with significantly below-normal temperatures.

High pressure will push away from the area today and a “clipper” low pressure system will head this way from the Great Lakes. This “clipper” system is likely to initially generate some occasional rain in the area from later tonight into Saturday although snow can be mixed in at times in some areas. Then, as the system intensifies off the Mid-Atlantic coastline late tomorrow night, there can be some snow shower activity as colder air gets pulled in from the north. High pressure will return for the early part of next week.

Winter will not go away easily. After another cold, dry day on Friday, attention will turn to the next system that could bring some snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic region between tomorrow night and early Sunday morning. Beyond that, there will be some modifications in temperatures during the early part of next week, but then another significantly colder-than-normal air mass reaches us by the middle of next week.

High pressure will build into the region over the next 24 hours, but the wind remains a factor today and it’ll stay quite cold as well. A “clipper” low pressure system drops southeastward across the Great Lakes from later Friday into Saturday and it should generate occasional rain showers in the region.

A strong northwest flow follows yesterday’s coastal storm and the much colder-than-normal air mass stays in place right into the weekend. There is also a chance for snow showers today and perhaps even an isolated heavier snow squall this afternoon which can bring quick small accumulations of an inch or so. Low temperatures during the next couple of nights should drop to near the 20 degree mark in many suburban locations. High pressure builds into the area on Friday, but then another "clipper" low pressure system will head in our direction by Friday night/early Saturday and it can bring with it some rain shower activity. Looking ahead, winter is not over yet as it looks like there will be more cold air outbreaks and potential snow threats.
