An active weather pattern will bring us the chance for strong-to-severe thunderstorms later today and early tonight - any one of which can produce heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and hail. A trough of low pressure in the lower atmosphere will combine with upper-level energy later today to generate very unstable conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region. A strong cool front will approach the region from the northwest later tomorrow and slowly grind its way through the region on Friday. As a result, the threat for showers and thunderstorms will continue on Thursday and Thursday night and into the last day of the work week. In addition, much cooler air will push into the region on Friday anchored by high pressure to the north and west and it'll stay quite comfortable on both weekend days although perhaps somewhat unsettled at times.

After a break in the wet weather pattern during the past few days, more showers and thunderstorms will return to the region today and some of the rain can be heavy at times. A warm front will push northward into the region today and then a cold front will settled southeastward across the area tonight and stall just to our southeast on Wednesday keeping us unsettled for the next couple of days. A secondary cool frontal system is sweeping through the Mid-Atlantic region this morning and it’ll usher in a comfortable air mass for the upcoming weekend. Humidity levels will drop noticeably later today and both days of the weekend should feature plenty of sunshine, comfortably warm conditions, and low humidity. The next front of note looks like it’ll arrive by the middle of next week with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms from later Tuesday into Wednesday. An active weather pattern is setting up for the I-95 corridor for later today/early tonight extending all the way from the Carolinas to New England. There is an approaching vigorous wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere that will combine with diurnal heating and an advancing surface frontal boundary zone to destabilize the atmosphere over the next few hours and the result will likely be widespread showers and thunderstorms between about 2 and 9 PM in the I-95 corridor. Any storm that forms later today can produce torrential rainfall, flash flooding, and perhaps even damaging wind gusts. Looking ahead, a second frontal system will pass through the region early Friday and it’ll be followed by a much more comfortable air mass for the weekend with noticeably lower humidity levels.
