An unsettled weather pattern continues today in the Mid-Atlantic region with numerous showers ahead of a cold frontal system that will usher in a much cooler air mass for later tonight and Thursday. After a dry day on Thursday, unsettled and cool conditions will prevail on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as an upper-level trough of low pressure moves overhead. In fact, much of the northern US will experience unsettled and cooler-than-normal conditions for the next ten days or so and this will result in more accumulating snow in such places as the Rocky Mountain States.

Our unsettled weather pattern will continue today with additional showers and a possible strong thunderstorm or two. A cold front is pushing towards the region and it will slide through by tonight ushering in a much cooler and drier air mass during the overnight hours. High pressure takes control on Thursday generating sunshine around here to go along with the cooler temperatures that follow the frontal passage. Strong thunderstorms have broken out across eastern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia and some of these may reach the DC-to-Philly corridor late in the afternoon or early tonight. This activity is being driven in part by an upper-level impulse that contributed to a large batch of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms across Kentucky earlier in the day. Clearing skies today in the I-95 corridor has allowed for a rapid warm up and destabilization of the lower atmosphere and moisture levels are sufficient to support strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity. The threat for severe weather is not likely to extend up to New York City or the northern/eastern parts of New Jersey as an onshore flow will keep the atmosphere more stable in those areas.

It’ll become quite warm today with the return of sunshine and temperatures should climb well up into the 80's. Our unsettled weather pattern will continue with showers and thunderstorms likely from later today into later Wednesday...some of the rain can be heavy at times and some of the storms that form can be on the strong side. The first half of the week will be quite wet across the Mid-Atlantic region with a nearby frontal system and several waves of low pressure moving along the frontal boundary zone. There will be occasional showers today and the chance for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The chance for showers and storms will continue tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday as well. High pressure should follow on Thursday producing sunshine and slightly cooler conditions and then we’ll have to watch a coastal low at the end of the week which could skirt the region and produce additional showers.

A cooler air mass will arrive in the region today following the passage of a strong cold front in the overnight hours and temperatures this afternoon will be confined to the 60’s for highs. Temperatures late tonight will drop into the lower 40’s which will be quite a change from the mid and upper 80’s that we experienced on Wednesday afternoon. While the cool down will be quite dramatic from the summer-like warmth at mid-week, the bigger story will be the winds which could gust to the 50-60 mph range later today and tonight – potentially resulting in downed limbs and power outages. The combination of a strong and intensifying low pressure system departing to our northeast and an approaching strong high pressure from the western Great Lakes will create an intense pressure gradient in the Mid-Atlantic region – and result in those potentially damaging wind gusts. The winds will die down later tomorrow and temperatures will climb noticeably from the chilly lower 40’s at the start of the weekend to the lower 80’s mark by later Sunday.

Clouds will be prevalent today and tonight as a cold front slowly presses our way from the Great Lakes region and there will be a chance of showers, maybe even a strong thunderstorm or two. Temperatures will again climb to above-normal levels, but it won’t be quite as unseasonably warm as it was on Wednesday afternoon when temperatures peaked way up in the mid-to-upper 80’s. The front will slide through early tomorrow and it’ll usher in a cooler air mass for tomorrow night and Saturday, but the bigger story will be the winds. It turns even warmer on Wednesday with temperatures reaching the middle 80’s and it’ll stay well above normal on Thursday as well in the DC metro region.
