7:00 AM | Well below-normal temperatures for mid-April

Paul Dorian

Today will be an unsettled day with the chance for a few PM showers and temperatures will be well below-normal for this time of year.  In fact, there can even be some snowflakes mixed in later today across the normally colder sections of the region. High temperatures this afternoon will struggle to reach 50 degrees and the normal high is now 61 degrees at Central Park.  It’ll turn milder at mid-week for a brief period, but then another cool front will slide through the region and cool us down once again to well below-normal levels by the latter part of the work week.

7:00 AM | Heavy rain event is to be followed by much colder air for tonight and Tuesday*

Paul Dorian

A strong west-to-east moving cold frontal system is slowly working its way through the area this morning and the heavy, steady rain will continue through the morning and then evolve into a pattern of intermittent showers this afternoon, maybe a residual thunderstorm. Much colder air will push into the region tonight and temperatures on Tuesday will be way below-normal for mid-April and struggle to pass the 50 degree mark for highs.  We’ll turn milder again at mid-week only to turn cooler again following the passage of another cool front by Thursday.

11:00 AM | **Dreaded back door cold front brings dramatic changes in temperatures for Sunday…heavy rain event Sunday night/Monday with possible strong thunderstorms**

Paul Dorian

A major warm up in the DC, Philly, NYC corridor will continue into Saturday, but then temperatures will come crashing down on Sunday as a strong back door cold front slides down the Northeast US coastline from northeast-to-southwest.  A more conventional west-to-east moving cold front will then produce a heavy rain event around here on Sunday night and Monday and strong thunderstorms can be mixed into the picture as it turns somewhat milder on Monday ahead of the cold front.  In fact, the rain may be so heavy early Monday morning that it could have a negative impact on the AM commute up and down the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Much colder-than-normal air will follow the passage of the west-to-east moving cold front for Monday night and Tuesday and highs may struggle to reach the 50 degree mark on Tuesday afternoon.

7:00 AM | *Back door cold front brings in a dramatic change for Sunday...heavy rain event late Sunday night into Monday with strong thunderstorms as well*

Paul Dorian

Temperatures will climb into the 70's for highs today and on Saturday, but it’ll turn a lot colder on Sunday thanks to a strong back door cold front that will be dropping down the Northeast US coastline from northeast-to-southwest. A heavy rain event is likely here from late Sunday night into Monday as a west-to-east moving strong cold front pushes in from the Midwest.  There can be strong thunderstorms mixed into the picture as well during this heavy rain event and some locations in the I-95 corridor could end up with more than two inches by later Monday morning. This same cold front will likely result in a widespread severe weather outbreak today across the southern Plains and on Saturday in the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys.  The next month or so could very well be quite active in those same areas with the possibility of numerous severe weather events.

7:00 AM | *Heavy rain event late Sunday night into Monday*

Paul Dorian

A major warm up will begin in earnest today as southwesterly winds pick up and temperatures climb well into the 60’s despite some clouds.  Temperatures will climb well into the 70's for highs on Friday and Saturday - perhaps even reaching the 80 degree mark in some spots. It could turn a lot colder on Sunday depending on the movement of a back door cold front that will be moving down the Northeast US coastline. A heavy rain event is likely from late Sunday night into Monday as a strong cold front pushes in from the west. There can be strong thunderstorms mixed into the picture as well and rainfall could exceed two inches in many I-95 locations by later Monday morning.  This same west-to-east moving cold front will likely result in a widespread severe weather outbreak on Friday (southern Plains) and Saturday (Tennessee and Ohio Valleys) and the next month or so could very well be quite active with numerous severe weather events.

12:00 PM | *Wild weather coming with near 80 degrees followed by the dreaded back door cold front followed by a heavy rain event with possible strong-to-severe thunderstorms*

Paul Dorian

“April is the cruelest month” so said T.S. Eliot many, many years ago. Just when it looks like spring has sprung for good and the winter cold is over, temperatures can change on a dime in the Northeast US during the early part of the spring. It is this time of year when temperatures can drop from the 70’s to the 40’s in a matter of hours in places like Boston, New York, Philly and DC if the “dreaded back door cold front” moves in from the northeast. In fact, this appears to be a strong possibility this weekend as a dramatic drop in temperatures may occur between Saturday and Sunday in at least parts of the I-95 corridor with southwest winds shifting to a northeasterly direction. By Sunday night, a deep upper-level low and a strong surface cold front will begin to approach the eastern states and this setup is likely to result in a heavy rain event for DC, Philly and NYC in the Sunday night/Monday morning time period and there can be strong-to-severe thunderstorms included. Following this heavy rain event, much cooler air will push in from the Midwest in a more conventional west-to-east direction, and it looks like it’ll stay colder-than-normal right into the latter stages of the month.

7:00 AM | *Major warm up begins on Thursday and peaks on Friday and Saturday...much colder on Sunday and then a heavy rain event Sunday night/Monday*

Paul Dorian

Today will be another day on the chilly side around here, but a major warm up will begin in earnest on Thursday as southwesterly winds pick up and temperatures climb to the middle 60’s despite plenty of clouds.  Temperatures will climb well into the 70's for highs on Friday and Saturday - perhaps even reaching the 80 degree mark in some spots. It could turn a lot colder on Sunday depending on the movement of a back door cold front and then soaking rain is likely from Sunday night into Monday as colder air pushes in from the west.  That soaking rain on Sunday night/Monday may be accompanied by some thunderstorm activity as well as the overall pattern transitions back to colder-than-normal from the late week surge of warm air.

7:00 AM | **70's here on Friday and Saturday...back door cold front on Sunday...heavy rain event possible Sunday night into Monday**

Paul Dorian

There is a major warm up coming here later this week and for the weekend, but it will be just a temporary break in the overall colder-than-normal weather pattern that we have been experiencing for several weeks now. It stays chilly today and Wednesday with nothing more than an isolated lingering shower this morning as low pressure pulls away from the coastline.  The warm up begins in earnest on Thursday as southwesterly winds pick up in intensity and temperatures will climb well into the 70's on Friday and Saturday - perhaps even a flirtation with the 80 degree mark. We'll transition back to colder-than-normal weather by the early part of next week and the transition won't come quietly as a heavy rain event is likely here from Sunday night into Monday and there may be thunderstorm activity as well. One final note, we'll have to watch for a back door cold front on Sunday which could very well drop temperatures significantly compared to the warmth expected on Saturday.

7:00 AM | There is much warmer weather on the way - at least for a few days - but then it turns cold again next week

Paul Dorian

There is a major warm up coming here later this week and for the weekend, but it will be just a temporary break in the overall cold weather pattern that we have been experiencing for several weeks now.  Clouds will thicken up later today as low pressure forms along the SE US coastline and there will likely be some rain and snow shower activity from tonight into early tomorrow.  It stays chilly at mid-week, but then the warm up begins in earnest on Thursday and the 70's are possible for highs on Friday and Saturday. The transition back to next week's colder weather may not come quietly this weekend as there is likely to be a widespread severe weather outbreak for much of the central and eastern US and a heavy rain event here in the Sunday/Monday time frame.

1:15 PM | **Abnormal April cold returns here this weekend and generally cold pattern continues into the second half of the month…low pressure that “hangs back” on Saturday still has to be monitored**

Paul Dorian

It is currently about as cold as it ever gets during the month of April in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest and it’ll turn much colder here in the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend following a brief spike in temperatures this afternoon.  In fact, temperatures here this weekend will be some 20-25 degrees below normal for this time of year and this seemingly never-ending colder-than-normal weather pattern is likely to continue into at least the second half of the month.  A strong cold front will push through the region later tonight and usher in the next cold air mass for the weekend and a couple waves of low pressure will form along the frontal boundary zone on Saturday making snow an on-going threat in parts of the I-95 corridor.
