The first couple of days of the new work week will be quite hot and humid as high pressure off the coast continues to funnel in the high heat and humidity from our southwest. Big changes are coming, however, by later in the week. A weak front will begin the transition to more comfortable conditions on Wednesday and Thursday and then an even stronger front will usher in comfortable air for the late week and upcoming weekend.

Thunderstorms lit up the skies last night in parts of the Mid-Atlantic region with vivid displays of lightning and the threat of showers and thunderstorms will continue today, tonight and tomorrow. A stalled-out frontal system will keep it unsettled around here into the weekend and any shower or thunderstorm that develops can produce heavy rainfall amounts in a short period of time….watch for localized flooding. The threat of rain will continue on Sunday, but the showers and storms on that day are likely to be less widespread than what is expected for the next couple of days. Copious amounts of clouds today and tomorrow will help to keep temperatures limited somewhat compared to Thursday - the hottest day of the week - but the humidity will remain at uncomfortably high levels right through the weekend.

There will be a surge of high heat and humidity today into the Mid-Atlantic region and temperatures will climb to the middle and upper 90’s. There can be a late day and nighttime shower and thunderstorm and those chances form rain will increase on Friday as a frontal system stalls out nearby. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will likely continue through the upcoming weekend as the front meanders in the Mid-Atlantic region, but much of the time will be rain-free. Any shower or thunderstorm that does form over the next few days can produce heavy rainfall amounts in a short period of time.

After a sunny and warm day here at mid-week, southwesterly flow will increase tonight and begin funneling in a hotter and more humid air mass into the Mid-Atlantic region from the Tennessee Valley. In fact, temperatures on Thursday afternoon are likely to reach their peak for the week climbing to the middle and upper 90’s in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor…maybe even a flirtation with the 100 degree mark in some spots. In addition to the heat, dew point temperatures will climb into the lower 70’s tomorrow indicative of high humidity levels making for quite uncomfortable conditions and heat indices above 100 degrees. After the high heat and humidity of Thursday, attention will turn to an approaching frontal system from the northwest that will be a slow-mover. The front will stall on Friday in an environment that will be very moist and - with some support aloft associated with a long-wave trough - ingredients may come together for numerous showers and thunderstorms including the threat of downpours. In fact, this same front is likely to meander in the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend and additional pieces of energy will rotate through the upper-level trough keeping it unsettled with additional showers and thunderstorms on the table. Any shower or storm that does this form this weekend will also have the capability of producing heavy rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic similar to what can take place on Friday.

The week started off with below-normal temperatures in much of the Mid-Atlantic region thanks to plenty of cloud cover and a light low-level easterly breeze. As is often the case this time of year, the break in the heat will be rather short-lived. High pressure pushes off the east coast at mid-week and the peak in this week’s heat and humidity in the Mid-Atlantic region may come on Thursday after persistent southwesterly flow develops on the backside of the high. After that, the potential exists for some heavy rainfall from Thursday night into the upcoming weekend as a frontal system stalls in the region with weak wind flow aloft and a very moist overall environment.

It’ll turn out warmer today compared to Monday with the return of sunshine following the mainly cloudy start to the week. High pressure will stay in control through tomorrow night and then it pushes offshore on Thursday allowing for a surge in heat and humidity in the northeastern states. In fact, temperatures could soar well up into the 90’s on Thursday afternoon and then a slow-moving front will approach from the northwest on Thursday night and Friday. This late week frontal system is likely to stall out near the coast and result in shower and thunderstorm activity from Friday into Saturday - some of which can be heavy at times.

A decent start to the week in terms of temperatures which will be slightly below normal for the first day of Augusts and there will be drizzle at times and many a couple of showers. A warm front pushes north through the region on Tuesday and then a weak cool front follows on Tuesday night. The second half of the week will turn hotter and more humid on the back side of high pressure pushing off the coast to our east.

A cool front will move slowly across the area later today into tonight and it will come with another chance of showers and thunderstorms. The front should clear the coast by early tomorrow and a comfortable air mass will push into the Mid-Atlantic region for the weekend. Temperatures will be confined to the 80’s today and into the early part of next week. Hot weather will develop in the central US by the middle of next week and a surge in heat and humidity can return here later next week.

A cool front will approach the region later today and then move slowly across the area during the next 24-36 hours. As such, it’ll stay unsettled around here with the chance of showers and thunderstorms later today, tonight and on Friday though much of the time will be rain-free. The cool front will push far enough to the south and east by the weekend to allow for the arrival of a comfortable air mass into the Mid-Atlantic region. After a flirtation with the 90 degree mark later today, temperatures should generally be confined to the 80’s for afternoon highs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and even into the early part of next week.

After a pretty decent day today, one upper-level disturbance will head our way for tonight and it’ll increase the chance of showers and thunderstorms. It stays unsettled on Thursday with an additional shot at showers and thunderstorms as a second disturbance moves overhead. Yet another chance of showers and thunderstorms will come on Thursday night and Friday with the next cool front and it looks like that system will clear through here by early Saturday. As such, a comfortable air mass should push into the Mid-Atlantic region for both Saturday and Sunday with high temperatures confined to the 80’s on both days.
