7:00 AM | Another disturbance swings through the region before a warming trend develops by the weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

More clouds than sun, not quite as cold as yesterday, a few rain or snow showers possible late in the day, highs in the mid 40’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cold, breezy, chance for snow showers, lows in the upper 20’s

Friday

Partly sunny, breezy, milder, low 50’s

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, cold, mid 30’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, even milder, low-to-mid 60’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, cool, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Partly sunny, colder, near 50

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy, cold, low 40’s

Discussion

A few rain or snow showers are possible later today and tonight as the next wave of Pacific moisture rides across Colorado. Once this disturbance passes by the southern Rockies, a warming trend will develop and temperatures should approach 60 degrees early this weekend. Looking ahead, however, an upper level trough will likely usher in some colder air by the middle of next week and it could be accompanied by some more snow.

7:00 AM | Bitter cold start to the day with a deep, fresh new snowcover, but warmer weather returns by the weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, bitter cold start to the day, afternoon highs struggle to reach the mid-to-upper 20's

Tonight

Partly cloudy, very cold, lows near 20 degrees

Thursday

Partly sunny, not as cold, near 50

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, cold, chance for some snow late, near 30

Friday

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for a few rain or snow showers, low 50’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, milder, low 60’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, mild, near 60

Monday

Partly sunny, cool, mid-to-upper 50’s

Discussion

Following yesterday’s snowstorm, there is some residual moisture in the area that will keep clouds around for awhile today while it stays way below normal temperature-wise and just plain bitter cold for April. By late tomorrow, a weak disturbance will approach the region quite rapidly from the Pacific Ocean and this system could generate some rain and snow shower activity around here tomorrow night and Friday before drier and milder conditions take over for the weekend. Saturday's highs could very well reach 60 degrees which will be a dramatic improvement from the single digits around the area this morning.

7:00 AM | Perhaps the warmest day of the week, but an onshore cooler flow resumes by the weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, breezy, mild, mid 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, breezy, cool, lows in the mid 50’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, breezy, cooler, upper 60’s

Thursday Night

Mostly clear early, clouds late and maybe some patchy fog, cool, lows in the mid 50’s

Friday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, partly sunny, cool, upper 60’s

Saturday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, mostly sunny, cool, upper 60’s

Sunday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, mostly sunny, even cooler, low 60’s

Monday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, partly sunny, cool, low 60’s

Discussion

Northeast winds will help to boost temperatures to the middle 70’s along coastal sections, but onshore flow will return by the end of the week. The onshore flow will bring a return of late night and early morning low clouds and fog along with an overall cooling trend. High temperatures by early next week will have a tough time getting past the low 60’s along coastal sections.

11:40 AM | Global sea ice update...now running slightly above normal

Paul Dorian

Discussion

Sea ice occupies about 7% of the surface area of planet Earth and is especially important in polar regions. Even though sea ice is found predominately in polar regions, it does have an influence on global climate as its bright surface reflects much sunlight back into space. The North Pole region is considerably different than the South Pole in that up north there is an ocean (Arctic) that is surrounded by land whereas down south there is land (continent of Antarctica) surrounded by ocean. The Arctic responds much more directly to changes in air and sea-surface temperatures than does Antarctica. Currently, the northern hemisphere sea ice content is below normal while the southern hemisphere is well above normal and the combination of the two has produced a global sea ice content that is now actually slightly above normal.

The below normal trend for northern hemispheric sea ice began in the mid-90’s at which time the Atlantic Ocean entered a warm (positive) phase. Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperatures can be tracked through an index called the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Specifically, sea-surface temperatures in the north Atlantic have been running at above normal levels in recent years and this is having an influence on the northern hemisphere sea ice content. Oceanic cycles can last two or three decades and it is quite likely that when the AMO returns to a cold (negative) phase the sea ice in the Arctic region will return to normal or even above normal levels on a consistent basis similar to what happened prior to the mid-90’s. Meanwhile, way down south the sea surface temperatures have been running below normal in recent times in those areas surrounding the continent of Antarctica and this is contributing to the above normal levels of sea ice in that part of the world.

7:00 AM | Still windy today, but not quite as strong as yesterday

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, still windy with gusts to 30 mph, milder, highs in the upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, breezy, cool, lows in the low-to-mid 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, breezy, mild, mid 70’s

Wednesday Night

Mostly clear, cool, lows in the mid 50’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, upper 60’s

Friday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, partly sunny, pleasant, upper 60’s

Saturday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, mostly sunny, cool, mid 60’s

Sunday

Early morning fog possible; otherwise, partly sunny, cool, mid 60’s

Discussion

The system that produced powerful winds around here on Monday will push to the east today and while still quite gusty, winds will not be as strong today as they were yesterday. An upper level ridge of high pressure will quickly build into the region today from the west and temperatures will respond by climbing well into the 70’s by tomorrow afternoon. It looks as if some cooling will follow for the latter part of the week and early morning fog may make a return by the weekend.

7:00 AM | **Major springtime snowstorm continues today with blowing and drifting causing dangerous road conditions**

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Snow, heavy at times, windy with gusts past 40 mph causing blowing and drifting, total snowfall accumulations on the order of 6-12 inches by later tonight, very cold, temperatures holding in the teens

Tonight

Snow winds down this evening, continued windy with blowing and drifting, bitter cold by morning with lows near 10 degrees

Wednesday

Partly sunny, cold, mid 30’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, very cold, windy, near 20

Thursday

Partly sunny, chilly, upper 40’s

Friday

Partly sunny, milder, low 50's

Saturday

Partly sunny, mild, near 60

Sunday

Partly sunny, even milder, mid-to-upper 60’s

Discussion

A major early spring snowstorm will continue today across the southern Rockies and 6-12 inches of total snowfall accumulation is likely by early tonight. Winds will be quite strong today gusting past 40 mph and this will cause blowing and drifting generating dangerous road conditions. The snow winds down this evening, but temperatures will drop to bitter cold levels by tomorrow morning at or just below the 10 degree mark. The second half of the week will begin a dramatic warm up which will ultimately see temperatures climb back to the 60 degree mark for afternoon highs this coming weekend.

7:00 AM | Major western storm to bring damaging winds to the region!

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy this morning then mostly sunny this afternoon with wind gusts past 40 mph, cool, highs in the mid 60’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, very windy, cool, lows in the low 50’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, still very windy, not as cool, near 70

Tuesday Night

Mostly clear, cool, lows in the mid 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, breezy, milder, mid 70’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Friday

Mostly sunny, cooler, mid-to-upper 60’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, cool, mid 60’s

Discussion

A powerful upper level low with significant upper level wind support will generate strong wind gusts in southern California to begin the new week. Gusts to 40 mph are likely along coastal regions this afternoon with up to 70 mph gusts possible in the mountains from this system to start the week along with dry conditions and increasing amounts of sunshine. These strong winds are likely to cause power outages with downed limbs and power lines later today into tonight. A warming trend kicks in at mid-week, but it’ll be short-lived as it’ll turn cooler again late in the week.

7:00 AM | **Powerful western storm to bring significant springtime snow accumulation to the region by tomorrow night**

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, very mild, becoming windy, showers and thunderstorms likely late this afternoon, highs in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Tonight

Cloudy, windy and turning colder with rain likely before midnight and then snow after midnight, lows by morning near 20 degrees

Tuesday

Snow, heavy at times, windy with gusts past 40 mph causing blowing and drifting, total accumulations on the order of 6-12 inches by evening, very cold with temperatures holding in the upper teens and much lower wind chill values

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, snow still possible early, brutal cold, windy, lows near 10 degrees

Wednesday

Partly sunny, cold, mid 30’s

Thursday

Partly sunny, milder, chance for showers, upper 40's

Friday

Partly sunny, still cool, near 50

Saturday

Partly sunny, milder, upper 50’s

Discussion

An early spring snowstorm is headed to the southern Rockies for later tonight into late Tuesday and it could bring 6-12 inches of total snowfall accumulations to the region. A storm system will move from the Great Basin to near the Four Corners region by tonight and then into eastern Colorado by tomorrow. Temperatures will start off at mild levels early tonight, but as colder air pours into the region after midnight, any rain will change to accumulating snow and that will continue for much of the day on Tuesday. Winds will pick up as well on Tuesday gusting past 40 mph and blowing and drifting is likely to cause dangerous road conditions. The snow will wind down tomorrow evening, but temperatures will drop to brutally cold levels near 10 degrees by early Wednesday. A warming trend develops late this week and we could flirt with the 60 degree mark for highs over the weekend.

7:00 AM | Windy for the next few days with early morning low clouds; a warming trend by mid-week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Patchy fog and low clouds early then becoming partly sunny, windy, cool, highs in the low 60's

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, some fog possible late, windy, cool, lows in the mid 50’s

Saturday

Patchy fog and low clouds early then becoming partly sunny, windy, cool, low-to-mid 60’s

Saturday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, fog possible late, breezy, lows in the mid 50’s

Sunday

Patchy fog and low clouds early then becoming mostly sunny, windy, cool, low-to-mid 60's

Monday

Early morning fog then becoming partly sunny, breezy, cool, low 60’s

Tuesday

Early morning fog then mostly sunny, breezy, a bit milder, mid 60’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny, milder, low-to-mid 70's

Discussion

It’ll remain on the windy side for the next few days with highs generally confined to the low-to-mid 60's along coastal sections and there will continue to be some late night and early morning low clouds and fog. By the middle of next week, a high pressure ridge should begin a noticeable warming trend and the overall dry pattern will continue.

7:00 AM | Near 70 degrees for the Rockies afternoon home opener

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, very mild, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool, lows in the upper 30's

Saturday

Partly sunny, not quite as mild, a few showers possible, low-to-mid 60’s

Saturday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, upper 30’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, seasonal, chance for a few showers and thunderstorms, near 60

Monday

Mostly cloudy, chance for some rain showers and thunderstorms, upper 50’s

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy, colder, chance for some rain or snow showers, mid-to-upper 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, chilly, mid 40’s

Discussion

An upper level ridge of high pressure will bring us the chance to reach 70 degrees this afternoon – just in time for the Rockies afternoon home opener. The weekend will feature slightly cooler temperatures as a weak trough moves through the region and it could touch off a a few showers on Saturday and possibly some thunderstorm activity on Sunday. The normal high temperature for Denver at this time of year is right around 60 degrees. Colder air returns to the southern Rockies by Tuesday of next week.
