7:00 AM | Showers and strong thunderstorms possible through tomorrow as disturbance approaches the region

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, becoming breezy, hot, chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms, highs in the low 90's

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for a few more showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 60’s

Discussion

An upper level wave of low pressure will enhance the chances for showers and thunderstorms later today into Friday evening as it drags a surface frontal system across the southern Rockies. Some of the storms that form with this frontal system can get quite strong over the next 36 hours or so with heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Temperatures will trend downward behind the front on Friday and Saturday to close out the week.

11:15 AM | Global sea ice areal extent currently running near normal; northern hemisphere continues below normal, but southern hemisphere almost at record high sea ice areal extent for the date

Paul Dorian

Discussion

The areal extent of northern hemisphere sea ice continues to run at below normal levels, but this is being compensated by above normal readings in the southern hemisphere so that the current global sea ice areal extent is relatively close to normal.

Sea ice occupies about 7% of the surface area of planet Earth and is especially important in polar regions. Even though sea ice is found predominately in polar regions, it does have an influence on global climate as its bright surface reflects much sunlight back into space. The North Pole region is considerably different than the South Pole in that up north there is an ocean (Arctic) that is surrounded by land whereas down south there is land (continent of Antarctica) surrounded by ocean. The Arctic responds much more directly to changes in air and sea-surface temperatures than does Antarctica.

The below normal trend for northern hemisphere sea ice began in the mid-90’s which is about the same time the northern Atlantic Ocean entered a warm (positive) phase. Northern Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperatures are tracked by meteorologists through an index called the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Specifically, sea-surface temperatures in the north Atlantic have been generally running at above normal levels since the mid 90’s and this is quite likely having an influence on the northern hemisphere sea ice areal extent. Oceanic cycles can last two or three decades and it is likely that when the AMO returns to a cold (negative) phase the sea ice in the Arctic region will return to normal or above normal levels on a consistent basis similar to what occurred prior to the mid-90’s.

Meanwhile, way down south the sea surface temperatures have been running below normal in recent times in those areas surrounding the continent of Antarctica and this is likely contributing to the above normal levels of sea ice in that part of the world. In fact, the southern hemisphere sea ice area has been generally above normal for the last several years it is very close to a record high for this time of year (second only to 2010) when compared to all years going back to 1979 which is when satellite-era data records began for global sea ice.

7:00 AM | Tolerable temperature pattern continues as does a threat for scattered showers and thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, warmer, becoming windy, highs in the upper 80’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, mild, breezy, lows in the low 60’s

Thursday

Partly sunny, very warm, breezy, chance for a shower and thunderstorm, near 90

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for a few showers and thunderstorms, low 60’s

Friday

Partly sunny, cooler, chance for a shower and thunderstorm, low 80’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, comfortably warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low-to-mid 80’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, warmer, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, upper 80’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, hot, near 90

Discussion

An upper level ridge will take control of our weather pattern today as it moves overhead and then it will retrograde farther west on Thursday. This movement will allow for some subtropical moisture to move into the southern Rockies region and this could help to generate scattered showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will continue this weekend as well, but it’ll tend to dry out early next week as the subtropical moisture flow will be cut off. As a result, more sunshine, more heat and a lower chance for rain will be the likely weather scenario next Monday and Tuesday.

7:00 AM | The eastern US bakes, but southern California is generally rather seasonable

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Patchy early morning fog then becoming mostly sunny, breezy, seasonably cool, highs in the low 70’s along coastal locations

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, cool, fog possible late, lows in the low-to-mid 60’s

Wednesday

Patchy fog early then becoming mostly sunny, breezy, seasonably cool, low 70’s

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, mild, fog possible late, low 60’s

Saturday

Patchy fog early then becoming mostly sunny, seasonably cool, low 70’s

Sunday

Patchy fog early then becoming mostly sunny, seasonably cool, low 70’s

Discussion

A relatively normal temperature pattern will continue for much of the week across southern California while, at the same time, the eastern US experiences its hottest weather of the summer. Afternoon highs for the next several days will be quite close to the seasonable levels in the lower 70’s near coastal regions.

7:00 AM | Temperatures remain rather comfortable around here while at the same time the eastern US bakes

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, comfortable, highs in the low 80’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool, lows in the upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, warmer, upper 80’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, low 60’s

Thursday

Partly sunny, very warm, chance for a shower and thunderstorm, near 90

Friday

Partly sunny, not as warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, comfortable, low 80’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, warm, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, mid 80’s

Discussion

An unusual upper air pattern will keep the eastern part of the country quite hot for the next few days, but the southern Rockies will stay under the influence of an upper level low that retrograded from the East over the past few days. As a result, temperatures will stay comfortable around here and a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out.

12:45 PM | "Home Run Weather" app index a perfect 10 out of 10 for tonight's home run derby in New York City

Paul Dorian

Discussion

The annual Major League Baseball (MLB) Home Run Derby will take place tonight in New York City at the Mets Citi Field ballpark and the “Home Run Weather” app index is a perfect 10 out of 10 so expect some impressive distances as the balls will fly. Temperatures will climb this afternoon into the mid-to-upper 90’s in the New York City metro region with full sunshine and high humidity. By the time the derby begins, temperatures will remain at lofty levels in the upper 80’s and the excessive humidity will no doubt be sticking around.

For its first couple of years, Citi Field was one of the toughest parks for hitting home runs (28th and 27th respectively out of 30 MLB parks), but then they moved the fences in before the 2012 season and now the park is in the middle of the pack in the National League (NL) and 12th overall. Specifically, the first half of the season saw an average of 1.89 home runs per game at Citi Field which placed the stadium exactly in the middle of the 15 NL parks. The average home run distance for the first half of this season was just a hair under 400 feet (399.9). The longest home run hit in Citi Field so far this season was 453 feet by Marlon Byrd of the Mets on June 16th – a distance very likely to be surpassed tonight at the derby thanks in large part to the hot, humid weather conditions. Last year's home run derby winner was Prince Fielder and he also hit the longest drives of the night (twice) at 476 feet. The longest home run ever hit in the home run derby was 528 feet by Sammy Sosa in 2002.
