Tonight

Partly cloudy, chilly, lows in the low-to-mid 40’s

Wednesday

Friday

Partly sunny, breezy, mild, chance for a shower or two during the day and then showers likely at night, near 70

Saturday

Becoming mostly sunny, mild, upper 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, low 70's

Discussion

Low pressure is pulling away from our region this morning and today will feature clearing skies with an increasing wind and milder conditions. It’ll stay relatively mild and dry for Wednesday and Thursday, but then a frontal system should bring some shower activity as we close out the work week. After possible clouds early on Saturday, the weekend should turn out to be quite pleasant with dry and mild conditions.

Looking ahead, colder air is likely to arrive into the eastern half of the country by the middle of next week at the same time a coastal low pressure system could ride up the east coast. The end result could even be snow for some of the higher elevation interior locations of the Northeast U.S. (e.g., Appalachians).

7:00 AM | Soaking rain moves continues right through this evening; rest of the week looks pretty decent

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Cloudy with a soaking rain throughout the day, the rain will be heavy at times, breezy and cool, highs in the low-to-mid 50’s

Tonight

Cloudy, chilly, more rain likely and maybe a thunderstorm or two, some of the rain can be heavy at times, lows in the upper 40’s

Clouds and possible lingering showers early in the day then becoming partly sunny, breezy, milder, low-to-mid 60’s

Tuesday Night

Partly cloudy, chilly, low 40's

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, windy, cooler, near 60

Thursday

Mainly sunny, milder, low-to-mid 60’s

Friday

Partly sunny, mild, chance for showers, near 70

Saturday

Partly sunny, mild, mid 60’s

Discussion

Low pressure headed our way from the Gulf of Mexico will bring a soaking rain to the region today and tonight and there can be a thunderstorm or two mixed in. Temperatures will stay on the cool side today as there will be a flow of air off the still-cool Atlantic Ocean. Once the low pulls away on Tuesday, there will be clearing skies and milder conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region. Wednesday will be on the cool side with a stiff NW wind, but it’ll turn milder again later in the week and, at this vantage point, the weekend looks quite mild and dry.

Cloudy, breezy and mild with occasional showers, maybe a late day thunderstorm, highs near 60 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, showers likely with a possible thunderstorm or two, turning cooler late, lows in the mid 40’s

Saturday

Becoming partly-to-mostly sunny, breezy and milder, near 60

Discussion

An approaching cold front will bring occasional showers to the region for today and tonight and there can be a thunderstorm or two mixed in late in the day or early tonight. This front will clear the east coast by early tomorrow and a clearing trend will set in with noticeable improvement for Saturday afternoon and Sunday promises to be quite a nice day for this time of year to close out the weekend. That break in the action won’t last too long; however, as another moisture-laden system will arrive on Monday with significant rainfall possible.

7:00 AM | More rain for the DC metro region as we close out the work week and a significant rain event is possible early next week after a decent weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy and mild with the chance for showers late in the afternoon, highs in the low-to-mid 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cool with occasional showers, lows in the upper 40’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, mild, occasional showers, maybe an afternoon thunderstorm, low 60’s

Friday Night

Mainly cloudy, evening showers likely and maybe a thunderstorm, turning cooler late, upper 40’s

Saturday

Becoming partly-to-mostly sunny, breezy, mild, low 60’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, a bit cooler, upper 50’s

Monday

Mainly cloudy, mild, periods of rain, near 60

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy, mild, chance for early showers, low 60's

Discussion

A frontal system has stalled in the region and this boundary zone will act as a conduit for moisture to ride along into the Mid-Atlantic during the next couple of days. While today will be mainly rain-free, there can be an occasional shower late in the afternoon and more numerous showers are likely tonight and Friday. As a cold front approaches the east coast late in the day on Friday, there can be some convective activity developing in the area with scattered thunderstorms possible late tomorrow or tomorrow night. Once this cold front clears the coast early in the weekend, the overall trend will be for clearing; however, that break won’t last too long as another moisture-laden system will arrive with significant rainfall later Monday and Monday night.

7:00 AM | Increasing chance for rain as the week progresses; weekend looking pretty decent

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny and quite mild, a shower or two cannot be ruled across the northern suburbs, highs in the upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for showers late, lows in the upper 40’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, mild, chance for showers, low-to-mid 60’s

Thursday Night

Mainly cloudy, cool, showers likely, near 50

Friday

Mostly cloudy, mild, showers likely, maybe a thunderstorm, low-to-mid 60’s

Saturday

Chance for a shower early; otherwise, mainly sunny skies, mild, mid 60’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, a bit cooler, upper 50's

Monday

Mainly cloudy, mild, periods of rain likely, low 60's

Discussion

An area of low pressure will move by to our north today and drag a cold front through the region. There is an area of moisture assocaited with the front, but most of it should stay to our north across southern Pennsylvania and extreme northern Maryland. This front will then stall to our south and multiple waves of low pressure will ride along the stationary frontal boundary zone. As a result, the threat for showers will continue tomorrow and then on Friday, but the weekend is looking pretty decent at this point in time. Another system could bring rain to the region on Monday of next week.

Discussion

After a much milder day today, the weather will become somewhat unsettled for the second half of the week. An area of low pressure will move through the Great Lakes region at mid-week on its way towards eastern Canada and its associated cold front will pass across our region early tomorrow. The front is then forecast to stall just south of the area later in the week and pave the way for some late week wet weather. Another low pressure system emerging from the Rockies and moving northeastward toward the Great Lakes should bring its warm front through the region by Friday with its cold front passing through the region early Saturday. Once that cold frontal system clears the region early on Saturday, clearing skies will take place in time for a decent weekend.

Discussion

The powerful and slow-moving storm that affected the Mid-Atlantic region with significant rainfall - and even some accumulating snow - is finally pulling away from our region this morning. The weather will improve noticeably this afternoon throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and tomorrow will turn out to be quite a nice day. The weather will, however, become somewhat unsettled for the second half of the week.

Another area of low pressure will move through the Great Lakes region at mid-week on its way to eastern Canada and its associated cold front will pass across our region early Wednesday. The front is then forecast to stall just south of the area later this week. Another low pressure system emerging from the Rockies and moving northeastward toward the Great Lakes should first bring its warm front through the region by Friday with its cold front passing through the region early Saturday.

1:30 PM | **Slow-moving and intensifying storm to affect the Mid-Atlantic through the weekend*

Paul Dorian

Sfc_map

Discussion

A slow-moving and major storm system will affect the I-95 corridor right through the weekend and in some areas (e.g., Philly, NYC), as long as into Monday morning. Up to three inches of rainfall is possible in some spots by the time the system winds down early on Monday. Intensifying low pressure is now centered over eastern Tennessee and it will move slowly along a stalled out frontal boundary zone to a position near the Delmarva Peninsula by early tomorrow morning. Rainfall will become steadier and heavier as evening approaches, continue heavily through much of the night, and then there will be additional periods of rain on Sunday and Sunday night in most of the Mid-Atlantic region as the storm grudgingly moves to a location off of the Mid-Atlantic coastline by later tomorrow night.

One other factor to mention with this upcoming major storm, colder air will wrap into the system during the day on Sunday with increasing northerly winds. It is not out of the question that snowflakes and ice pellets mix in with the rain later tomorrow and tomorrow night along the I-95 corridor as the storm hangs around; especially, in higher elevations in the far northern and western suburbs of the big cities – and perhaps there can even be a changeover to all snow in some of those interior, higher elevation locations with small accumulations. The overall weather improves dramatically later in the day on Monday and the “Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday” time period looks quite nice with mild conditions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Discussion

A major storm will affect the I-95 corridor from DC-to-Philly-to-New York City for much of the upcoming weekend and some areas could end up with three inches of rain by the time early Monday morning rolls around. Intensifying low pressure will be centered over the Tennessee Valley early tomorrow afternoon and it will move along a stalled out frontal boundary zone to a position near the Delmarva Peninsula by early Sunday morning. Rain will break out in most I-95 corridor locations during the mid-to-late morning hours on Saturday and will come down steadily and heavily later tomorrow and tomorrow night causing localized flooding problems in poor drainage areas. The powerful storm will then grudgingly move northeast on Sunday to off the Mid-Atlantic coastline, but the rain will linger through much of the day in the Mid-Atlantic region although not as steady or as heavy. There is even the chance that some precipitation lingers as late as early Monday morning in the Philly and NYC metro regions.

One other factor to mention with this upcoming major storm, colder air will wrap into the system during the day on Sunday with increasing northerly winds. It is not out of the question that snowflakes mix in with the rain along the I-95 corridor as the storm slowly winds down later Sunday and Sunday night and perhaps there can even be a complete changeover to all snow in some nearby higher elevation locations. The overall weather improves dramatically later in the day on Monday as partial sunshine returns and the Tuesday/Wednesday time period will be quite mild.

7:00 AM | **Significant rainfall headed to the DC metro region as a major weekend storm develops; could even see some snow in later Sunday as the storm winds down**

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Cloudy, breezy and milder with occasional showers, some of the rain can come down hard at times, highs approaching the 60 degree mark

Tonight

Mainly cloudy, breezy, a shower or two early then showers likely towards morning, cool, lows in the mid-to-upper 40’s

Saturday

Cloudy and cooler with periods of rain, some of the rain will be heavy at times, low 50’s

Saturday Night

Cloudy and colder with periods of rain, some of the rain will be heavy at times, upper 30’s

Sunday

Cloudy, windy, cold, occasional rain still likely and don't be shocked if snowflakes mix in with the rain or if there is even a complete changeover to snow before ending, mid-to-upper 40's

Monday

Mainly sunny, mild, low-to-mid 60’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, very mild, upper 60’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, very mild, upper 60’s

Discussion

A cold frontal system will generate occasional showers in the local area as we close out the work week and then a major storm will develop this weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region and it will produce significant rainfall from Saturday into Sunday. By the time the end of the weekend rolls around, some Mid-Atlantic locations could see up to three inches of rainfall with localized flooding a real possibility. Furthermore, colder air will wrap into the lingering storm system late Saturday night and on Sunday with increasing northerly winds and it is possible that snowflakes mix in with the rain or that there is even a complete changeover to snow as the storm slowly winds down.

The cold frontal system will set the stage for the weekend event as it will stall early Saturday over the Delmarva Peninsula. Low pressure will develop in the Ohio Valley early in the day and it will ride right along the stalled out frontal boundary zone bringing substantial moisture to the local area for much of the weekend. This low pressure area will intensify dramatically as the weekend progresses aided by a deepening upper-level trough. Genuine clearing does not look like it will take place until Monday and Tuesday which promise to be a nice days with the return of sunshine and mild conditions.
