A mix of clouds and sun, maybe an afternoon shower or two, still on the cool side, highs in the mid 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, quite cool, lows in the lower 50’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 70

Friday Night

Mainly clear, cool, mid-to-upper 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, warmer, near 80

Sunday

Partly sunny, warm, showers possible at night, low 80’s

Monday

Partly sunny, cooler, maybe a shower, low-to-mid 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 70

Discussion

A weak cool front will pass through the region later today and this will usher in reinforcing cool air for the Mid-Atlantic region to close out the work week. In fact, high temperatures on Friday will struggle to pass the 70 degree mark with high pressure centered over New England producing a cool flow of air out of the northeast. By the weekend, this high will shift offshore and this movement will allow the winds to shift to a southwesterly direction and we’ll get increasingly warmer over the weekend. By Sunday afternoon, much of the I-95 corridor from DC-to-NYC will experience high temperatures at or above the 80 degree mark, but the late weekend warmup will be rather short-lived. Another cool front will usher in a cool air mass by Monday and those cooler-than-normal conditions should continue into mid-week.

Discussion

The odds for a "beltway" World Series took a step forward last night and there will be great weather today for those in Baltimore and DC who are in a celebratory mood. A weak cool front passed through the region early yesterday and high pressure has regained control and will stay in control for the rest of the week. Temperatures will continue to run at below normal levels over the next few days with highs generally in the 70’s along the I-95 corridor and nighttime lows in the cool lower-to-middle 50’s. As high pressure pushes off the Northeast coastline this weekend, our low-level winds will become southwesterly and it'll turn warmer. In fact, the warmest of the next five days is likely to be Sunday with 80+ degrees for high temperatures. That weekend warm up will be short-lived, however, as a cool front should usher in cooler air during the early part of next week. Elsewhere, flooding rains can be expected in Arizona and New Mexico over the next couple of days from the remains of Hurricane Odile.

7:00 AM | Cool front ushers in a reinforcing shot of cooler-than-normal air for the rest of the week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Tonight

Mostly clear, quite cool, lows in the low 50’s

Wednesday

Saturday

Partly sunny, cool, low-to-mid 70’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, comfortable, upper 70’s

Discussion

A weak cool front is working its way through the region this morning and high pressure will resume control of our weather this afternoon and evening. In fact, high pressure from the Midwest will control the weather scene in the northeastern quadrant of the country from later today through the remainder of the week. Temperatures will remain below normal for this time of year with highs generally in the 70’s along the I-95 corridor during the next several days. The normal high for Reagan National Airport in DC on this date is 80 degrees and the first half of September ended 3.9 degrees above normal due primarily to a very warm opening week.

Elsewhere, the remains of Hurricane Odile will spread heavy rainfall into Arizona and New Mexico over the next few days with several inches likely by the end of the week. This active tropical pattern in the eastern Pacific will continue in the foreseeable future as the next tropical system, Polo, is already getting organized. Polo could very well spread additional rains into the Baja region and Southwest US during the next week to ten days. Meanwhile, in the Atlantic Basin, Hurricane Edouard churns along as a category 2 storm and it continues to pose no threat to land.

1:30 PM | Meteor lights up the Mid-Atlantic skies on Sunday night; video captures a brief change from night-to-day as meteor passes over central PA

Paul Dorian

doc2[Widespread area of eyewitness accounts from last night's meteor according to the American Meteor Society]

Discussion

A very bright meteor was seen streaking across the skies throughout the Mid-Atlantic region on Sunday night according to dozens and dozens of eyewitnesses. The fireball flashed over the Mid-Atlantic region around 11pm according to numerous reports and turned night into day for a few seconds as captured on video in State College, PA. The American Meteor Society (AMS) tracks fireballs and they have received more than 150 reports from Virginia to New Hampshire and as far west as central Ohio (Google map above shows range of reports; Google map available at http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball_event/2014/2187; courtesy AMS). The meteor was so bright in fact that numerous reports have poured in from the highly populated areas of DC, Philly and New York City. Jesse Ferrell of Accu Weather (State College, PA) recorded video on “dropcam” webcams in State College, PA and posted this to YouTube (http://youtu.be/Q3Mu5bFKjHY) which captures the lighting up of the sky as the meteor passed overhead.

Tonight

Becoming mostly cloudy, cool, chance for showers, lows not far from 60 degrees

Tuesday

Becoming partly-to-mostly sunny, breezy, cool, mid-to-upper 70’s

Mostly sunny, cool, low 70’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, cool, low 70’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, cool, low 70’s

Discussion

The coolest air mass of the season so far has dropped early morning temperatures into the lower 50's across many suburban locations and afternoon highs will stay at below-normal levels for this time of year despite plenty of sunshine. High pressure controls our weather today, but a weak cool front could generate shower activity in the region late tonight and early tomorrow before high pressure regains control and dry, cool weather returns to the area.

7:00 AM | A cool weekend with occasional rain on Saturday and sunshine on Sunday; an update on the recent solar activity

Paul Dorian

Tonight

Mostly clear this evening and then becoming mostly cloudy late, cool, maybe a shower towards morning, lows in the upper 50’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, cool with occasional rain, near 70

Saturday Night

Mostly cloudy, quite cool, still the chance for showers during the evening hours, upper 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, cool, low 70’s

Monday

Partly sunny, cool, chance for showers at night, low 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for showers, low 70’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, still cool, low 70’s

Discussion

A strong cool front passed through the region late yesterday ushering in a chilly air mass for this time of year that had its origins in western Canada. As a result, the Mid-Atlantic region will feature below normal temperatures not only through the weekend, but also through the early and middle parts of next week. This early season Canadian cold air outbreak has had its biggest impact relative-to-normal across the northern Plains and northern Rockies where snow has accompanied the plunge in temperatures. Some spots such as in Rapid City, South Dakota have seen their earliest snowfall on record and nearly a foot of snow has fallen in higher elevation localities across the northern Rockies. High pressure centered over the middle of the country this morning will extend into the Northeast US protecting us from any rainfall, but a disturbance to our southwest will produce occasional rain around here on Saturday. The combination of the entrenched chilly air mass and thick clouds on Saturday will make it a struggle for temperatures to pass the 70 degree mark - way below the seasonal norms for this time of year. While some sunshine will return on Sunday and Monday, temperatures will stay at below normal levels as mid-September approaches.

An update on the recent solar activity...the first of two CMEs expected to hit Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 12th has indeed arrived, and a minor (G1-class) geomagnetic storm is underway as a result of the impact. The second and potentially more powerful CME is still en route. NOAA forecasters say geomagnetic storming could become strong (G3-class) during the late hours of Sept. 12th and Sept 13th after the second CME arrives.

7:00 AM | Strong storms possible later today with approach of strong cool front; more rain likely on Saturday

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

More sun than clouds, quite warm and humid, scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms and a few of the storms can be strong, highs in the upper 80’s

Tonight

Evening showers and thunderstorms possible; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, turning cooler late, lows in the low 60’s by morning

Friday

Becoming mostly sunny, cooler and less humid, mid 70’s

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, maybe a shower towards morning, near 60

Saturday

Mostly cloudy and quite cool with occasional rain likely, low 70’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, quite cool, low 70’s

Monday

Partly sunny, quite cool, maybe a shower at night, low 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy, still quite cool, showers likely, low 70’s

Discussion

A strong cool front will approach the region later today generating scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours and a few of the storms can be on the strong side. Temperatures ahead of the front will climb to the highest levels of the week in the upper 80's and the humidity will become quite noticeable by this afternoon. The cool frontal system passes through the area by early tomorrow ushering in another cool air mass for this time of year and just in time for the weekend. In fact, temperatures will hold at below normal levels on both weekend days and there is likely to be occasional rain on Saturday in much of the Mid-Atlantic region adding to the chill in the air.

7:00 AM | Back to 80 degrees today and then well up into the 80's on Thursday; cool frontal passage late Thursday will bring showers and possible strong thunderstorms to the region

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy skies early then partial sunshine during the mid-day and afternoon hours, warmer than yesterday with highs reaching the 80 degree mark

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild, muggy, some fog possible late, lows in the upper 60's

Thursday

Thursday Night

Evening showers and thunderstorms possible; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, turning cooler late, low-to-mid 60’s

Friday

Becoming partly sunny, cooler and less humid, low-to-mid 70’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, quite cool, showers likely, low 70’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, quite cool, low 70’s

Monday

Partly sunny, still quite cool, low 70’s

Discussion

Low pressure off the east coast this morning will continue to push area from the region and this will allow for improvement in the weather with the return of some sunshine and warmer conditions compared to yesterday. Temperatures this afternoon should reach the 80 degree mark, but the warmest weather of the week will take place on Thursday just ahead of the next strong cool frontal system. That front will generate numerous showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow and some of the storms can be strong with brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Once that front clears the east coast early Friday, another cool air mass will move into the region and the weekend promises to be well below normal for this time of year with showers likely on Saturday.

7:00 AM | Cool and damp conditions today in the DC metro region; heavier rainfall stays to our east

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Cool and damp today with mostly cloudy skies, a touch of rain or drizzle possible during the mid-day and afternoon hours, highs struggle to reach the middle 70’s

Tonight

Cloudy, cool, still the chance for a bit of rain or drizzle, lows near 65 degrees

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy and damp early, some sun possible late, becoming a bit warmer, near 80

Wednesday Night

Mainly cloudy, mild, mid-to-upper 60’s

Thursday

The warmest day of the week with partial sunshine, warm and more humid conditions, good chance for PM showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Friday

Becoming partly sunny, cooler and less humid, low-to-mid 70’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, quite cool, showers possible, low 70's

Sunday

Partly sunny, still quite cool, chance for a shower, near 70

Discussion

Low pressure along the east coast will keep us damp and quite cool today with a persistent low-level ocean flow of air out of the northeast. The steady rain associated with this low pressure area will mainly affect areas to the south and east of Route I-95, but there can be a bit of rain or drizzle later today that reaches the big cities between DC and NYC. This low will gradually pull away from the coastline on Wednesday and overall weather conditions will improve somewhat later in the day with partial sun possible and there should be a bit of a rebound in afternoon temperatures. Thursday promises to be the warmest day of the week ahead of the next strong cool front with temperatures bouncing back to the mid-to-upper 80’s in many spots along with a noticeable rise in humidity levels. Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Thursday afternoon and evening with the frontal passage and then another cool air mass reaches the Mid-Atlantic region at the end of the work week. Temperatures this weekend will remain quite cool and there is the threat for showers in the Mid-Atlantic region.

7:00 AM | Developing coastal low pressure system to bring cloudy, cool and damp conditions to the region

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy skies, cool, chance for occasional showers late today, highs in the mid-to-upper 70’s

Tonight

Cloudy, cool, occasional rain or drizzle, lows in the low-to-mid 60’s

Tuesday

Cloudy, quite cool, occasional rain or drizzle, mid 70’s

Tuesday Night

Mainly cloudy, cool, still the chance for showers, low-to-mid 60’s

Wednesday

Becoming partly sunny, still on the cool side, upper 70’s

Thursday

The warmest day of the week with partial sunshine, warm and humid conditions, good chance for PM showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Friday

Partly sunny, cooler, maybe a shower, upper 70's

Saturday

Mostly sunny, quite cool, low 70’s

Discussion

Cooler and drier air pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region yesterday and it will stay cool today with thickening clouds ahead of a developing coastal low pressure system. That system will spread some occasional rain or drizzle into the region later today, tonight and Tuesday and temperatures will hold in the 70's for highs as there will be a cool, ocean flow of air at low levels of the atmosphere. By Wednesday, partial sunshine will return to the area as the low pulls away from the region and then there will be a noticeable warmup on Thursday ahead of the next strong cool front. That cool front will generate afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and it will usher in the coolest air mass of the season so far to the Mid-Atlantic region. The weekend appears quite cool and dry from this vantage point and temperatures will be well below normal for this time of year.
