7:00 AM | Nicer weather for the remainder of the week

Paul Dorian

High pressure will build into the area over the next couple of days and sunshine will return following yesterday’s very wet start to the week.  An area of clouds and showers associated with the remains of Tropical Storm Julia will spin just to our south over the next couple of days, but it shouldn’t make it this far north to impact our weather.  Temperatures should climb to the 80’s during the remainder of the week, but a much cooler air mass - the coolest yet this season - will arrive for the latter part of the weekend and the early part of next week.

7:00 AM | Slow-moving frontal system combined with tropical moisture and the week starts off on the wet side

Paul Dorian

A slow-moving cold front is still working its way through the I-95 corridor and tropical moisture will enhance the rainfall causing occasional downpours from later this morning through the afternoon. A second cold front will slide through the area on Tuesday likely without any precipitation and it will be followed by building high pressure for the mid-week before shifting off the coast late in the week. Temperatures will hold to near 80 degrees today for highs, but are likely to reach into the low-to-mid 80’s for the remainder of the week.

7:00 AM | Finally, a chance for some decent rainfall during the second half of the weekend and some of it can be heavy

Paul Dorian

It has been quite dry in the I-95 corridor in recent weeks and some decent rainfall would indeed be a welcome sight for many.  In fact, we’ll have the best chance in several days to get some significant rainfall during the second half of the weekend and early part of next week as a cold frontal system slowly works its way through the area.  In addition, Tropical Storm Julia continues to meander off the Southeast US coastline this morning and its moisture field can even interact with this approaching cold frontal system late this weekend and help to enhance the rainfall amounts along portions of the east coast.  Today will be another rain-free day as we close out the work week with continued comfortable temperatures and the weekend will start off quite nice with some sunshine on Saturday before clouds roll in ahead of the frontal system.

7:00 AM | Noticeably cooler today and it'll stay nice tomorrow as well...chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front whipped through the region last night and today will turn out much cooler than yesterday with a touch of fall in the air.  The cooler-than-normal conditions will continue tomorrow as well, and we’ll be close to normal this weekend.  A frontal system will approach on Saturday night and Sunday and the chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase - and we can certainly use some rain.  In fact, some moisture from the tropical system in the Southeast US (“Julia”) could actually interact with the approaching frontal system and enhance rainfall amounts in our region.

7:00 AM | A touch of fall comes for tomorrow and Friday

Paul Dorian

Today will feature the hottest temperatures of the week, but the noticeable warmup will be short-lived as a strong cold front whips through the region in the overnight hours.  As a result, Thursday and Friday will be fall-like with afternoon temperatures generally confined to the comfortable 70’s. The frontal system will likely only generate a few isolated showers and thunderstorms later tonight in the immediate I-95 corridor and we’ll likely have to wait until Sunday or so before there is a chance for any decent rainfall in the area.

7:00 AM | A touch of fall on Thursday/Friday...decent rain chance comes Sunday/Monday

Paul Dorian

High pressure over the region will slide offshore over the next 24 hours or so and this will allow for much warmer air to make a brief appearance here at mid-week.  A strong cold front will then slide through the region tomorrow night and this will usher in the coolest air so far this month and it’ll feel like fall on Thursday and Friday with afternoon temperatures primarily in the 70’s on both days. As far as our dry spell is concerned, while tomorrow night’s frontal passage can spark an isolated shower, it does not look like it’ll be any kind of a significant rain event.  Our best chance may come in the Sunday/Monday time frame of early next week and that event could contain some decent rainfall.

10:20 AM | Summer wrap-up for Philly, DC, NYC and a look at the still active tropical season in the Atlantic Basin

Paul Dorian

The summer season of June, July and August is now over and the results are in: it was generally hotter and drier than normal in the I-95 corridor region from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC.  In fact, at all three locations each individual month featured above normal temperatures and only one location had above normal rainfall in a given month (NYC in July) – in all other cases, it was drier than normal.  The main factor contributing to hotter and drier than normal conditions here in the Mid-Atlantic region has to do with the transition in the tropical Pacific Ocean from El Nino (warmer than normal) to La Nina (colder than normal) conditions.  Typically, in these types of transition periods, hotter and drier summer weather dominates in this part of the country and this is what happened in similar recent transition years of 2005, 2007 and 2010. In terms of tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin, so far the season has been slightly less active than normal, but there are still several weeks to go and that can change.

7:00 AM | Much more comfortable air mass arrives for Sunday/Monday

Paul Dorian

A trough of low pressure could help to set off some late day and nighttime shower and thunderstorm activity in the area, but it will not bring us any relief from the heat as highs should once again top the 90 degree mark - perhaps at record-breaking levels in some spots.  A strong cold front will arrive late tomorrow night and it will likely generate more showers and thunderstorms for the area later tomorrow and tomorrow night.  Following the cold frontal passage, much more comfortable air will move in for Sunday afternoon and the early part of next week.
