12:20 PM | *Late week Arctic blast may not be the last of the month…”high-latitude blocking” pattern likely to form by Thanksgiving Day*

Paul Dorian

Let the games begin…it is now snowing in State College and Altoona in upstate Pennsylvania and the look to winter is suddenly upon us in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Low pressure today will head towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline and a cold rain in the I-95 corridor may actually end as a mix of sleet or snow tonight to the north and west of the big cities.  A powerful cold front will arrive with gusty winds on Thursday night and usher in an Arctic blast for Friday and Saturday with the lowest temperatures of the season so far and possible record-breaking low temperatures in many spots  An overall upper-atmosphere pattern with “high-latitude blocking” is looking increasingly likely for later this month and that could result in more cold air outbreaks for the Mid-Atlantic region by the time Thanksgiving week rolls around.

7:00 AM | **A cold rain today and a bit of sleet or snow could even mix in tonight well to the north and west...late week Arctic cold blast**

Paul Dorian

A cold frontal system passed through the region late yesterday and has stalled out in the southern part of the Mid-Atlantic. Low pressure will form along the frontal boundary zone over the Tennessee Valley this morning and head towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline producing rain in the I-95 corridor. It could be just cold enough in some of the higher elevation regions well to the north and west of here for a bit of sleet or snow to mix in with the rain later today or tonight. An even stronger cold front will arrive here on Thursday night with gusty winds and it'll usher in the coldest air mass of the season so far for Friday and Saturday. In fact, temperatures are likely to drop down into the 20's by early Saturday morning and highs on Friday and Saturday will be confined to the 40's. There will be some modification in temperatures early next week.

3:05 PM | *Snowflakes not far away late tomorrow…intense cold blast for Friday/Saturday*

Paul Dorian

The week started off on a warm note here in the Mid-Atlantic region, but it’ll turn noticeably colder tomorrow following the passage of a cold frontal system which will stall out over the southern Mid-Atlantic. In fact, low pressure will form along the frontal boundary zone on Tuesday and it’ll spread a chilly rain to many areas and there can even be some snowflakes mixed in tomorrow night in the higher elevations of northwest NJ and northeast/east-central PA. An even stronger (Arctic) cold front will arrive on Thursday night and this will be followed by an intense blast of cold air for Friday and Saturday which should result in the 20’s by early Saturday morning.

7:00 AM | Warm and unsettled to start the week...cold blast to end it

Paul Dorian

It’ll be another warm day in the Mid-Atlantic region as we start the new work week, but a cold front is approaching the region and it will generate showers later today and perhaps even a thunderstorm.  Low pressure will form along the frontal boundary zone on Tuesday over the Tennessee Valley and move towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline producing additional showers around here.  Cold high pressure will take over for the latter part of the week following the Thursday night passage of a strong cold front and our temperatures will slide to below-normal levels.

7:00 AM | Noticeably cooler tomorrow and a stretch of unsettled weather begins

Paul Dorian

It’ll be another warm day in the Mid-Atlantic region as we close out the work week and there will be some sunshine after early morning clouds and patchy fog.  A cold front will pass through the region tonight and its passage will knock some 15 to 20 degrees off of tomorrow’s high temperatures when compared to today.  It becomes unsettled from later tomorrow right into the middle of next week with the threat for occasional showers on a daily basis as multiple systems come our way.

7:00 AM | An ugly day today with chill and some shower activity...should get back to 70+ degrees on Thursday and Friday

Paul Dorian

High pressure will push off the coast by tomorrow and this will allow for a bit of a warm up after an ugly day today with lots of clouds, chilly conditions and some shower activity. Today’s temperatures will generally be confined to the 50’s, but they should approach the 70 degree mark on Thursday and Friday.  A cold front will slide through the region on Friday night and it’ll turn a bit cooler again for the weekend.

3:25 PM | *Major coastal storm near the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early Sunday night*

Paul Dorian

A major coastal storm is still in the works for later Sunday/Sunday night in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US and it will contain some tropical moisture from “Invest 93L” and cold air will be pouring in on its western flank into the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys.  This storm should bring significant rainfall to the DC-Philly-NYC corridor with the highest amounts on the northeast end and the lowest amounts to the southwest.  There will likely be two separate periods of strong winds in the Mid-Atlantic from this storm – one in the warm sector and the second following the passage of the strong cold front.
