Roads are mainly just wet early today, but watch for slippery spots as temperatures are still near the freezing mark in many N/W suburbs. Overall conditions will improve in the region later in the morning as temperatures climb above the freezing mark and they’ll peak in the low-to-mid 50’s this afternoon. In addition to some lingering rain today, winds will be an important factor gusting up to 30 mph or so. High pressure takes control this weekend with chilly conditions on Saturday, but milder weather on Sunday. Much colder air will return to the Mid-Atlantic region on Monday following the passage of a cold frontal system at the end of the weekend.

Temperatures tumbled in the overnight hours in the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold frontal system and setting the stage for a wintry mess from today into early Friday. In fact, temperatures dropped nearly 40 degrees in the I-95 corridor from the lower 70’s on Wednesday afternoon to the lower 30’s by early today as high pressure strengthened into southeastern Canada. From this location, this high pressure system will act as an anchor and a source region for cold air during the next 24 hours – a classic “cold air damming” pattern for the northeastern part of the nation. This kind of an atmospheric setup is setting the stage for mixed precipitation today and an icy buildup later tonight for many in the Mid-Atlantic region and there will likely be an impact on the Friday AM commute.

Much colder air has moved into the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold frontal system and moisture will head this way in two different waves. During today, some mixed precipitation of rain, sleet and/or snow is likely to break out in the DC metro region as an initial wave of low pressure heads this way. There can actually be a bit of a lull in the precipitation at the end of the day and then a second and stronger wave of low pressure will move in our direction. As a result, freezing rain is on the table for the evening hours and there can be an ice buildup of up to a tenth of an inch in some of the northern and western suburbs. The precipitation will become rather spotty and light in the overnight hours as the heaviest precipitation pushes north of the PA/MD border. Temperatures may hover near the freezing mark early tomorrow with freezing rain still possible in some of the suburbs to the north and west (watch for slippery spots), plain rain is likely by later in the morning and ultimately Friday’s temperatures will peak near 50 degrees.

The passage of a cold front will bring about big changes in temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region with today’s 60’s plunging to the freezing mark by early tomorrow. This influx of cold, dense air in the overnight hours will set the stage for a wintry mess from later tomorrow into early Friday. Some parts of the Mid-Atlantic will experience accumulating snow at the onset of this winter weather event and other areas will likely end up with a significant ice buildup including across much of southern and central Pennsylvania. The Friday AM commute is likely to an icy mess from the suburbs of Philly to the north and east including in and around the NYC metro region.

The current stretch of mild weather will come to a peak today with a breakout of sunshine and temperatures jumping towards the 70 degree mark. A cold front, however, will push through the region later in the day and this will lead to tumbling temperatures during the overnight hours and set the stage for some wintry precipitation from tomorrow into tomorrow night. During the day on Thursday, there can be some rain, ice and/or snow in the DC metro region and then freezing rain is quite likely tomorrow night for awhile and there can be an ice buildup in some of the far northern and western suburbs. By Friday, temperatures should climb above the freezing mark leading to some residual plain rain for the area.

Today will be another mild day in the Mid-Atlantic region with periods of rain as low pressure pushes from the Upper Midwest towards the southeastern part of Canada. The current mild stretch will peak on Wednesday afternoon with the breakout of sunshine after a cloudy start and temperatures are quite likely going to reach 65-70 degrees in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. The passage of a cold front later tomorrow will then bring about big changes in the temperature department in the overnight hours setting the stage for a winter weather event from later Thursday into early Friday. The winter weather event could include some snow accumulations; primarily, across the northern Mid-Atlantic and a potential significant buildup of ice in places like southern and central Pennsylvania.

It’ll stay quite mild again today, but rain is on the way for the mid-day and afternoon hours and it’ll continue into the evening as low pressure pushes by to our northwest. The warmest day of the week is coming on Wednesday ahead of the next cold front with temperatures likely to reach 70 degrees during the afternoon. Following the passage of the cold front, temperatures will tumble on Thursday and this could lead to some ice and/or snow in the DC metro region before an eventual changeover to plain rain on Friday.

It’ll be quite mild in the Mid-Atlantic region through mid-week, but then it turns much colder on Thursday and that cool down could be accompanied by some icing in much of the area. Temperatures today should make it into the 50’s and they’ll remain on the mild side on Tuesday, but it’ll become quite wet as well with a decent rainfall on the way from later tomorrow into tomorrow night. The warmest day of the week is likely to be on Wednesday ahead of the next cold front with temperatures likely to climb well up in the 60’s, but then big temperatures changes will take place by Thursday. Looking beyond the possible ice event later Thursday, numerous signs point to a continuation of winter weather conditions in the eastern states as we wind down the month of February and then flip over to March. In fact, there is a good chance for a very cold air mass to arrive in the east by early next week and it could be preceded by some snowfall.

A strong cold front has pushed through the region and winds will remain quite strong this morning in the Mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures will drop through the day following the early day highs and clouds will give way to sunshine for the mid-day and afternoon hours. After a cold and more tranquil night, Saturday will feature a reinforcing shot of cold air and this frontal passage will be supported by a strong wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere. As a result, there will be snow shower activity on Saturday in parts of the Mid-Atlantic/NE US and perhaps even a few isolated snow squalls. In addition, winds will become quite strong gusting past 40 mph in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor.
