7:00 AM | *****Major snowstorm continues for the Denver/Boulder metro regions with 10-16 inches on the table by late tonight...localized higher amounts are likely*****

Paul Dorian

There may be a lull in the snow for awhile this morning, but heavy snow will re-develop this afternoon across the Denver metro region and continue tonight as a strong upper-level low reaches around the southwestern states. The slow movement of this upper-level system is combining with deep, strong and long-lasting upsloping winds to produce significant snowfall around here and this pattern will last well into the night with 10-16 inches on the table for the Denver/Boulder metro areas and localized higher amounts are likely. Winds will remain an important factor with gusts past 30 mph today and tonight creating some blowing snow and there can be a rumble of thunder as well. The snow is of the heavy, wet variety which unfortunately, raises the possibility of some isolated power outages as the day progresses. Across the foothills, as much as 2-4 feet of snow is likely to accumulate during this major winter storm event by daybreak on Friday. The weather settles down this weekend and a noticeable warm up takes place early next week.

10:30 AM | ***A Denver snowstorm…severe weather threat Mississippi Valley…spring fever alert for the Mid-Atlantic region***

Paul Dorian

From a climatological point of view, March is a favorable time of year for accumulating snow in the Rocky Mountain States and it looks like “climatology” will come through this year. March is also quite an active month on average in terms of severe weather and indeed, an outbreak is possible later tomorrow and tomorrow night across the Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, the Mid-Atlantic region will enjoy back-to-back-to-back unseasonably warm days featuring temperatures in the 70’s in many spots and spring fever may spread rapidly.

7:00 AM | ****Major winter storm to bring significant accumulating snow to the region from this evening into early Friday****

Paul Dorian

From a climatological standpoint, the month of March is quite favorable for accumulating snow in the local area, and it looks like the climatology will deliver this year. The last couple of days have been quite mild, but big temperature changes are on the way beginning today and it looks like the colder weather will be accompanied by a major winter storm. A strong storm system will begin impacting the area today with rain or a combination of rain and snow. The precipitation changes to all snow later this evening and the snow is likely to continue, heavy at times, right into early Friday morning…snow should be of the heavy and wet variety. Significant snow accumulations of 8-14 inches are on the table for the Denver/Boulder regions and the foothills can receive 2 or 3 feet of snow. Winds will become an increasing factor with gusts of 30+ mph from later tonight into tomorrow night leading to blowing snow and there can be some rumbles of thunder mixed into the picture as well. The weather settles down this weekend and it turns milder again early next week.

Paul Dorian

The new work week started off on the mild side and it’ll stay quite mild today, but big changes are on the way and the upcoming colder weather will be accompanied by a major winter storm. Colder air works into the area by later tomorrow night and a strong storm system will likely impact the region with significant accumulating snow from Wednesday evening into early Friday morning…my preliminary snowfall estimates are 6-12 inches for the Denver and Boulder regions.

7:00 AM | ***A colder air mass has arrived and precipitation is likely to become all snow by later in the day...some accumulations are likely***

Paul Dorian

A colder air mass has pushed into the region and low pressure will produce some rain and snow here during the next 24 hours or so. The initial wave of precipitation can be a mix of rain and snow and there can even be a rumble of thunder mixed into the picture, but all snow is likely from later today into Friday. Accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible later today and tonight, and then another inch or so is possible on Friday. Temperatures will begin to rebound this weekend and highs are likely to be back near the 60 degree mark by Sunday afternoon.

One final note, this is the weekend in which we turn the clocks ahead as we switch back to Daylight Savings Time.
