The overall weather pattern is undergoing some changes this week with the main features being upper-level ridging that will expand and intensify over the western US and a vigorous upper-level trough that’ll reach the Northeast US by mid-week. Temperatures around here will climb to the upper 80’s for much of the week and rain chances will be rather high on a daily basis. Elsewhere, it looks like there will be a tropical system later this week or by this weekend over the Gulf of Mexico - perhaps the first important system of the young 2021 Atlantic Basin tropical season.

High pressure ridging over the southeastern states will tend to breakdown over the next 48 hours or so and this will lead to unsettled conditions and an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms. In addition, it’ll turn warmer with highs over the next few days not far from the 90 degree mark. Later next week, the upper-level pattern will feature strong upper-level ridging over the western US and a vigorous upper-level trough over the Northeast US. Looking ahead, there are signs of some tropical activity over the Gulf of Mexico by the third week of June which would potentially be the first of the 2021 Atlantic Basin tropical season.

High pressure ridging over Florida will remain in place until the late week before it finally shifts into the Gulf of Mexico. This system will combine with dry air aloft to limit any chance of rain around here for today, but the atmosphere will change by the weekend. In fact, an upper-level trough will sag into Florida this weekend and become stationary – increasing the chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms.

The combination of an increasingly moist flow of air, two surface frontal systems, and a slow-moving upper-level trough will raise the prospects for downpours in the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday and Thursday night and also the chance for strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity. The rain may actually come in two different waves – one late tonight/early Thursday associated with a warm frontal system and a second late tomorrow and tomorrow night associated with a cold front. High pressure builds across the eastern states this weekend and a classic summertime “Bermuda high” setup is likely to result in hot, humid and summer-like weather for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with high temperatures at or above the 90 degree mark in the I-95 corridor.
