There will be scattered showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon and tonight in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor as a cold front approaches and some of it will be on the heavy side; especially, south of the PA/MD border. This rain event will be relatively short-lived compared to what is coming later this weekend and early next week. Following tonight’s cold frontal passage, weak high pressure will try to get us off to a decent start this weekend, but it will be facing long odds as low pressure will head our way from the Lower Mississippi Valley. Rain is likely to return to the Mid-Atlantic region late in the day tomorrow or early tomorrow night and then continue off and on into Tuesday of next week. The heaviest rainfall may come in two parts with one period centered on tomorrow night into Sunday morning and then a second phase from late Sunday into Monday. A cold frontal system will approach the region today and it’ll turn windy and warmer ahead of it with temperatures jumping well into the 70’s this afternoon and there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will try to provide a decent start to the weekend, but a soaking rain event is likely from late Saturday night into Monday. The rain during this extended event may come in two waves with the heaviest likely from late Saturday night into Sunday morning and then Sunday night into Monday. A frontal system continues to meander around the Mid-Atlantic region and this will contribute to some stubborn cloud cover around here and perhaps a shower or two later today and tonight. A cold front will arrive in the region on Friday and it’ll turn warmer ahead of it with temperatures jumping into the 70’s and there will be scattered PM showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will follow for the first half of the weekend with decent weather expected on Saturday, but more rain is likely in the Mid-Atlantic region from Sunday into Monday as moisture flows this way from the south-central states.

A cool front passed through the region in the overnight hours and today will turn out cooler with a low-level flow of air from off the Atlantic. This front will meander in the Mid-Atlantic region through tomorrow keeping it somewhat unsettled and then another cold front will arrive on Friday. After a weekend that featured soaking rainfall, there will be a break in the action for the next couple of days as high pressure follows the departing low pressure system. It will become unsettled again later this week as a series of fronts will impact the region. The first front arrives late tomorrow as a cool front and this system will meander nearby during Wednesday and Thursday. A back door cool front has passed through the region once again and today will turn out cooler than yesterday with some light rain or drizzle this morning and an afternoon shower or thunderstorm is possible. Showers and thunderstorms are possible again tonight as a cold front arrives in the region and this front will then stall in the Mid-Atlantic this weekend. Low pressure will pull out of the Tennessee Valley on Saturday and ride along the stalled out boundary zone and right towards the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result, more rain is likely here from late tomorrow into Sunday afternoon and some of it can be heavy at times; especially, in the overnight hours. Nicer weather will return early next week as high pressure follows the departing weekend low pressure system.

A frontal system to our south this morning will push northward as a warm front later in the day and temperatures are likely to climb to the low-to-mid 70’s in the NYC metro region. Showers are possible later today and again tonight and then are likely to threaten us later tomorrow and tomorrow night as a cold front approaches the area. That cold front will then stall in the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend and a wave of low pressure will bring more showers and thunderstorms here from later Saturday into early Sunday and this system has the potential for some heavy rainfall.

High pressure will lose control of the weather around here today and a frontal system will meander in the Mid-Atlantic region for much of the week and weekend. As a result, our temperatures will tend to bounce up and down with today and Thursday becoming warmer, but it’ll be cooler on Wednesday as low-level winds become southeasterly for a short time.
