Discussion

Another major snowstorm slammed the southern Rockies over the weekend, but quite a change is in store for this week. A warming trend gets underway today and it’ll peak late in the week with high temperatures reaching the “spring-fever alert” mid-to-upper 60’s. Normal highs for this time of year have reached 53 degrees and we’ll be way above that level for the second half of the week. One final note, Comet PAN-STAARS is now visible in the northern hemisphere and the sky conditions may be quite favorable over the next few evenings to view it in the western sky shortly after sunset.

Discussion

A spectacular week is in store for the region weather-wise with copious amounts of sunshine each day and pleasant temperatures generally reaching the 70’s each afternoon. High pressure will stay in control through the week and will promote a dry, warm offshore flow of air. By next weekend, a slight cool down is likely to occur with some late night and early morning fog patches setting in along with the cooler conditions. One final note, Comet PAN-STAARS is now visible in the northern hemisphere and the sky conditions may be quite favorable over the next few evenings to view it in the western sky shortly after sunset.

9:30 AM | ***Another major snowstorm for the southern Rockies with 8-12 inches by later tonight***

Paul Dorian

Discussion

Another major snowstorm is headed to the southern Rockies for today and it is likely to dump another 8-12 inches on the Denver metro region by later tonight. The height of the storm is likely to occur during the late morning and early-to-mid afternoon hours with snow falling at 1-2 inch per hour rates. Winds will become a problem during the storm with gusts to 40 mph causing reduced visibilities, blowing and drifting. There will also be hazardous driving conditions with the low visibility and slick snow and ice-covered conditions. Improvement in the weather department begins on Sunday and a rather nice week is in store. Stay safe.

12:00 PM | Comet PAN-STAARS makes an appearance early next week

Paul Dorian

Discussion

There are not one, but two comets coming this year that could very well end up making 2013 remembered as the “Year of the Comet”. The first comet has actually been visible in the southern hemisphere during the past several weeks and it will become visible to the naked eye in the northern hemisphere early next week. The second comet called ISON comes late in the year (November/December) and that one promises to be one of the best of all-time according to some experts.

The first comet is officially known as Comet C/2011 L4 and it was discovered by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System known as PAN-STARRS. As a result, the comet has taken on the name “Comet PAN-STARRS”. This will be the comet’s first visit as it has never been pulled in by the sun’s gravity so some surprises are possible. Comet PAN-STAARS made its closest approach to Earth on Tuesday (March 5th) when it passed by at a range of about 102 million miles. It’ll make its closest approach to the sun on Sunday, March 10th, at about 28 million miles from the sun – a bit closer than the planet Mercury. The comet will still be low in the western sky on Sunday and likely be lost in the sun’s glare even as the nucleus vaporizes and brightens. While the comet might be viewable by Monday evening, some experts have pinpointed to next Tuesday and Wednesday (3/12, 3/13) as two of the best dates for viewing the new comet in the northern hemisphere as it emerges in the western sunset sky. On those evenings, the thin crescent moon will be close to the comet in the western sky. PAN-STAARS will continue to be a bright object in the evening sky for the rest of March and during the first half of April.

In summary, to see the comet beginning early next week, look for it in the western sky shortly after sunset just to the left of the point on the horizon where the sun sets. It should be visible with the naked eye, but even better with binoculars or small telescopes. Let’s hope for clear skies and turn the clocks ahead this weekend.

Discussion

Another major snowstorm is headed to the southern Rockies from later tonight through tomorrow evening and it is likely to dump another 6-12 inches on the Denver metro region by late tomorrow night. Today will be a transition day “temperature-wise” from the mild conditions of yesterday to the winter cold coming for tomorrow. Winds will become a problem during the storm with gusts to 35 mph causing reduced visibilities, blowing and drifting. There will also be hazardous driving conditions with the low visibility and slick snow and ice-covered conditions.

7:00 AM | Cold low pressure will continue to affect the region into the evening, but the weekend brings milder and dry conditions

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, cool, showers likely, maybe a few thunderstorms, mid 50’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, showers still likely in the early evening hours, cold, lows in the upper 40’s

Saturday

Becoming mostly sunny, cool, near 60

Saturday Night

Mostly clear, cold, upper 40’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, cool, low 60’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, milder, upper 60’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, upper 60’s

Discussion

Low pressure will continue to affect the region into the evening with showers and perhaps an occasional thunderstorm and this storm will have cold air to work with in the upper atmosphere. As a result, snow levels will drop to rather low levels bringing snows to the nearby mountains. Once this system moves by, there will be drying this weekend and temperatures will make a quick rebound by early next week reaching the pleasant upper 60’s on Monday.

7:00 AM | ***A nice and mild day today, but much colder air returns this weekend and another significant snowstorm is likely***

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, quite mild, highs near 60 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, lows in the low 30’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, not quite as mild, maybe a few showers or even a thunderstorm, low 50’s

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, cold, snow likely by around midnight, low 30’s

Saturday

Cloudy, cold, windy, periods of snow with significant accumulation on the order of 6-12 inches by later tonight, low 30’s

Sunday

Becoming mostly sunny, cold, mid 30’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, chilly, mid 40’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, not as chilly, low 50’s

Discussion

A dry and warm day is in store for the region as southwesterly flow of air aloft promotes a noticeable warming trend. A strong upper level low pressure system, however, will begin to bring about changes on Friday and, as that trough moves closer, it will actually generate much colder conditions along with more significant accumulating snow from Friday night through Saturday evening. In fact, accumulations could reach the 6-12 inch range by late Saturday night as this storm slides through the southern Rockies. Enjoy the mild weather today!

7:00 AM | *Cold low pressure moves into southern California for tonight and Friday with rain and snow*

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, cool, showers likely late, mid 50’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, showers likely, maybe a thunderstorm, cool, lows in the upper 40’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, cool, showers likely, maybe a few thunderstorms, mid 50’s

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, cold, showers and thunderstorms still possible, mid 40’s

Saturday

Becoming mostly sunny, still chilly, upper 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 60

Monday

Mostly sunny, milder, mid 60’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, upper 60’s

Discussion

Low pressure will affect the region from late today through tomorrow night and it’ll have cold air to work with in the upper atmosphere. As a result, thunderstorms could form in the unstable environment and snow levels will drop to rather low levels by tomorrow bringing snows to the mountains. Once this system moves by there will be drying this weekend and temperatures will make a quick rebound reaching the pleasant upper 60’s by early next week.

7:00 AM | A nice mild break in the weather for a couple of days, but cold and snow coould return this weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, much milder, highs near 60 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, lows in the low 30’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, still very mild, low 60’s

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, cold, low 30’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, a bit cooler, showers possible late, low-to-mid 50’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, colder, some snow likely, upper 30’s

Sunday

Mostly cloudy, still cold with possible snow, mid 30’s

Monday

Partly sunny, chilly, low 40’s

Discussion

A couple of very mild days are in store for the southern Rockies as temperatures climb to 60 degrees or higher thanks to strong southwesterly flow in the upper atmosphere associated with a building upper level ridge of high pressure. The weekend will bring a potent upper level low to the west coast and that will spawn a surface storm near the Four Corners region this weekend enhancing our chances for snow as colder air moves into the region. In fact, it is not out of the question that another significant snow event hits the southern Rockies over the upcoming weekend.

7:00 AM | Cool, unsettled weather pattern continues

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for some rain, upper 50’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, showers likely, cool, lows near 50 degrees

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for some more rain, upper 50’s

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, cold, chance for some light rain, upper 40’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, still chilly, showers likely, maybe a thunderstorm, low 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 60

Sunday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 60

Monday

Mostly sunny, not as cool, mid 60’s

Discussion

After several days of pleasant, warm weather last week a cool and unsettled weather pattern will prevail for the rest of this week. A cold front will bring the threat for some rain by tomorrow and temperatures will stay on the cool side. In fact, the coldest air will move in by the end of the week and snow levels will drop with the late week storm.
