12:45 PM | *Severe storm threat later today/tonight and it’ll continue into Friday when much cooler air arrives…the latest on a more active Atlantic Basin tropical scene*

Paul Dorian

There is a much cooler air mass headed this way for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and it’ll be an active stretch of weather in the Mid-Atlantic as we make that transition from today’s heat and humidity to the weekend comfort. There is a threat for strong-to-severe thunderstorms later today and tonight in the Mid-Atlantic region and northeast US as a surface low pressure trough will combine with high humidity and upper-level energy to destabilize the atmosphere later in the day. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will continue from Thursday/Thursday night into Friday as a strong cool front only slowly grinds its way through the region. Elsewhere, a minimal tropical storm (Chantal) has formed out over the open Atlantic Ocean and is no threat to the US; however, another system now near the Bahamas will have to be closely monitored in the coming week or so.

7:00 AM | **Strong-to-severe storms possible later today/tonight...noticeably cooler air arrives on Friday and it remains comfortable this weekend**

Paul Dorian

An active weather pattern will bring us the chance for strong-to-severe thunderstorms later today and early tonight - any one of which can produce heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and hail. A trough of low pressure in the lower atmosphere will combine with upper-level energy later today to generate very unstable conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region. A strong cool front will approach the region from the northwest later tomorrow and slowly grind its way through the region on Friday. As a result, the threat for showers and thunderstorms will continue on Thursday and Thursday night and into the last day of the work week. In addition, much cooler air will push into the region on Friday anchored by high pressure to the north and west and it'll stay quite comfortable on both weekend days although perhaps somewhat unsettled at times.

7:00 AM | *The threat of severe weather and downpours next few days...refreshing air mass for the weekend*

Paul Dorian

A series of weak fronts will impact the region over the next few days and any shower or thunderstorm that forms can produce heavy rainfall given the entrenched highly saturated air mass and even small hail will be a threat. Given the well-saturated grounds, any heavy rainfall can result in flash flooding conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region. A stronger cold front will slip through the area at the end of the week likely paving the way for a nice weekend with a much more refreshing air mass anchored by high pressure to our north and west.

7:00 AM | *Uncomfortably hot and humid to start the week...potential for downpours next few days...weekend may turn out quite nice*

Paul Dorian

A Bermuda high pressure system will continue to pump very warm and humid air into the Mid-Atlantic region over the next few days and temperatures are likely to climb to 90+ degree for highs as we begin the new work week. A series of weak fronts will impact the region over the next few days and any shower or thunderstorm that forms can produce heavy rainfall given the entrenched highly saturated air mass and even small hail will be possible. A stronger cold front will slip through the area at the end of the week likely paving the way for a nice weekend with a more refreshing air mass anchored by high pressure to our north and west.

7:00 AM | *Still somewhat unsettled next couple days...turns hotter again for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday*

Paul Dorian

A cool frontal system has stalled out nearby and its boundary zone will help to keep it somewhat unsettled in this area for the next few days. As a result, there will be lots of cloud cover, a continuing shot at showers and thunderstorms, and slightly cooler-than-normal temperatures for the middle of August. Hotter weather will make a return to this region by the second half of the weekend and afternoon highs will be pushing the 90 degree mark on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

7:00 AM | *Cool front stalls just to our south today and keeps it unsettled around here with more showers and thunderstorms...hot weather returns early next week*

Paul Dorian

A cool frontal system will stall out just to our south and east today and its proximity will keep us unsettled for the next few days. As a result, there will be a continuing shot at showers and thunderstorms, some of the rain can be heavy at times, and temperatures will hold at slightly below-normal levels for this time of year. High pressure will build into the area by the weekend and some sunshine is likely on both days and temperatures will climb noticeably by early next week with highs closer to the 90 degree mark.

7:00 AM | *Showers and thunderstorms are likely and some of the rain can be heavy at times*

Paul Dorian

After a break in the wet weather pattern during the past few days, more showers and thunderstorms will return to the region today and some of the rain can be heavy at times. A warm front will push northward into the region today and then a cold front will settled southeastward across the area tonight and stall just to our southeast on Wednesday keeping us unsettled for the next couple of days. The weekend may turn out quite decent for this time of year as high pressure should build into the region providing us with some sunshine on both Saturday and Sunday.

7:00 AM | *Refreshing air mass for the weekend bodes well for viewing the Perseid meteor shower*

Paul Dorian

A secondary cool frontal system is sweeping through the Mid-Atlantic region this morning and it’ll usher in a comfortable air mass for the upcoming weekend. Humidity levels will drop noticeably later today and both days of the weekend should feature plenty of sunshine, comfortably warm conditions, and low humidity. The next front of note looks like it’ll arrive by the middle of next week with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms from later Tuesday into Wednesday. One final note, the Perseid meteor showers peaks on Monday night, but conditions should be quite good this weekend for viewing (https://www.perspectaweather.com/blog/2019/8/5/1230-pm-perseid-meteor-shower-is-already-underwaypeaks-early-next-week).

7:00 AM | *A comfortable air mass moves in for the weekend*

Paul Dorian

One cool front passed through the region last night and it’ll stall out nearby today, but a second front will move through early tomorrow and usher in a comfortable air mass for the weekend. Humidity levels will drop on Friday and the drier air mass will stay around right through the weekend anchored by strong high pressure to the north and west of here. Both Saturday and Sunday should feature plenty of sunshine, low humidity and high temperatures generally confined to the lower 80’s.
