After a nice day on Tuesday, our unsettled weather pattern will make a return for the next few days as a nor'easter forms up the coastline with the arrival of a chilly air mass into the Northeast US. This unfolding storm system will bring more rain to the Philly metro region from later today into Friday and will produce accumulating snow in the higher elevation interior locations of New York State and New England (great for skiers). We'll experience windy and chilly conditions here on Friday following the departure of the storm system and the weekend is looking quite promising with some sunshine likely on both days and rather decent temperatures. Longer term, it looks like additional chilly air masses are likely to drop into the central and eastern US from Canada during the remainder of the month of April.

Just when most people desire the sustained warmth that spring can offer this time of year, the unfolding weather pattern says not quite yet – at least not for much of the central and eastern US. Not only is a chilly air mass coming for later this week, it appears there may be multiple cold air outbreaks for the central and eastern US as we progress through the remainder of the month of April. In addition to the chill, a late week nor’easter can bring accumulating snow to interior, higher elevations of the Northeast US as winter is simply not going away without a fight.

After what will turn out to be a pretty decent day on Tuesday, our unsettled weather pattern will make a return for the mid and late week as a nor'easter forms with the arrival of a chilly air mass. This storm will bring more rain to the I-95 corridor and some accumulating snow to portions of the interior and higher-elevation Northeast US. Low pressure will push towards the Mid-Atlantic coastline late Wednesday and then intensify on Thursday as it pushes slowly to the north and east. Given a strong blocking pattern aloft over Canada/Greenland, this storm may have a prolonged impact on the Northeast US late in the week with chilly, unsettled conditions. Additional chilly air masses are likely to drop into the central and eastern US from Canada for much of the remainder of the month of April.

To quote T.S Eliot…“April is the cruelest month”. Just when most desire the sustained warmth of spring, the weather pattern in the Northeast US can take a nasty turn and that unwelcome change is now unfolding as we approach the middle of the month. Last week featured some extreme cold in Alaska where some of the lowest temperatures ever for April were experienced and there was some very cold air in Europe as well. All of this took place while much of the US enjoyed generally warm and dry weather from coast-to-coast. That enjoyable pattern is certainly going away for the northeastern quadrant of the nation where below-normal temperatures may be the theme through the remainder of the month of April.

An unsettled and cooler pattern is likely for the next few days with some stubborn cloudiness in the area and a continued threat of showers. A series of upper-level lows will be strung out across the country this week and high pressure will expand over southeastern Canada. It’ll turn cooler for today as an onshore flow forms around high pressure to the northeast of us and then a bit milder on Tuesday only to turn cooler again later in the week. There is the threat for a strong coastal storm later in the week which could bring a soaking rain to much of the immediate I-95 corridor and perhaps wet snow to some higher elevation, interior locations of the Mid-Atlantic region such as NE PA/SE NY.

After several nice days in the Mid-Atlantic region, the weather will become much more unsettled as we head into the weekend and it’ll turn cooler here today as we close out the work week. A broad and slow-moving storm system will head our way from the middle of the country and it is going to result in scattered showers or patchy drizzle today, tonight and tomorrow and then a somewhat more steady rainfall on Saturday night and Sunday. Looking ahead, there are strong signs for much more chilly air to make a return too much of the eastern half of the nation as we progress towards the middle and latter parts of April.

A more organized and slow-moving system is likely to result in multiple rounds of showers around here from Friday through the upcoming weekend. High pressure will build across the northeastern part of the nation as we begin a new week and it will generate plenty of sunshine around here for our Monday.
