Strong thunderstorms have broken out across eastern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia and some of these may reach the DC-to-Philly corridor late in the afternoon or early tonight. This activity is being driven in part by an upper-level impulse that contributed to a large batch of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms across Kentucky earlier in the day. Clearing skies today in the I-95 corridor has allowed for a rapid warm up and destabilization of the lower atmosphere and moisture levels are sufficient to support strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity. The threat for severe weather is not likely to extend up to New York City or the northern/eastern parts of New Jersey as an onshore flow will keep the atmosphere more stable in those areas.

It’ll become quite warm today with the return of some sunshine after early day clouds, drizzle and fog. The unsettled weather pattern will continue with showers and thunderstorms possible from later today into later Wednesday...some of the rain can be heavy at times and some of the storms that form can be on the strong side. A cold front will push through by tomorrow night and high pressure will follow for Thursday with cooler temperatures. An upper-level trough will move overhead at week's end generating some instability in the atmosphere and possible showers.

The first half of the week will be quite wet across the Mid-Atlantic region with a nearby frontal system and several waves of low pressure moving along the frontal boundary zone. There is the chance of showers today with the highest likelihood in the mid and late afternoon hours and the chance for showers and thunderstorms will exist tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday. High pressure should follow on Thursday producing sunshine and slightly cooler conditions and then we’ll have to watch a coastal low at the end of the week which could skirt the region and produce additional showers.

A cooler air mass will arrive in the region today following the passage of a strong cold front in the overnight hours and temperatures this afternoon will be confined to the 60’s for highs. Temperatures late tonight will drop into the lower 40’s which will be quite a change from the mid and upper 80’s that we experienced on Wednesday afternoon. While the cool down will be quite dramatic from the summer-like warmth at mid-week, the bigger story will be the winds which could gust to the 50-60 mph range later today and tonight – potentially resulting in downed limbs and power outages. The combination of a strong and intensifying low pressure system departing to our northeast and an approaching strong high pressure from the western Great Lakes will create an intense pressure gradient in the Mid-Atlantic region – and result in those potentially damaging wind gusts. The winds will die down later tomorrow and temperatures will climb noticeably from the chilly lower 40’s at the start of the weekend to near the 80 degree mark by later Sunday.

The current warm spell in the Mid-Atlantic region that peaked on Wednesday afternoon will come to a halt with the passage of a strong cold frontal system in the early morning hours on Friday. A cooler air mass will arrive in the region on Friday and temperatures later tomorrow night will drop significantly into the lower 40’s for overnight lows – a far cry from the mid and upper 80’s experienced yesterday afternoon. While the cool down will be quite dramatic from the summer-like warmth on Wednesday, the bigger story will be the winds which could gust to the 50-60 mph range later tomorrow and tomorrow night – potentially resulting in downed limbs and scattered power outages.

Clouds will be prevalent today and tonight as a cold front slowly presses our way from the Great Lakes region and there will be a chance of showers, maybe even a strong-to-severe thunderstorm or two. Temperatures will again climb to above-normal levels, but it won’t be quite as unseasonably warm as it was on Wednesday afternoon when temperatures peaked way up in the middle 80’s. The front will slide through early tomorrow and it’ll usher in a cooler air mass for tomorrow night and Saturday, but the bigger story will be the winds. Gusts of 50+ mph are likely on Friday and Friday night as the pressure gradient intensifies between the departing low pressure system and an approaching strong high pressure.

Today will likely turn out to be the warmest day of the week with high temperatures this afternoon in the middle 80’s – well above-normal for this time of year. Clouds will be prevalent tonight and on Thursday and there is a shower threat as the unseasonably warm conditions continue and maybe even a strong thunderstorm or two. A cold front passes through the region early Friday and it could bring us some showers with cooler air to follow the frontal passage as we begin the upcoming weekend. Sunshine is likely on both weekend days and temperatures will trend upwards with very comfortable levels by Sunday afternoon.

The work week started off a bit on the cool side of normal, but a big time warm up begins today with afternoon temperatures likely to be well up in the 70’s. It turns even warmer on Wednesday with temperatures reaching the low-to-mid 80’s, but a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out as a weak back door cool front presses in from the northeast-to-the-southwest. This weak front could shave a few degrees off of Thursday’s highs, but it’ll continue to be well above normal for one more day. A more conventional cold front (i.e., moves from west-to-east) approaches on Friday and its passage will usher in cooler air for the upcoming weekend.

The week will start off on the chilly side on the backside of a cold front which passed through the region during the weekend. A big warm up will take place by mid-week, however, with temperatures jumping to the 70's on Tuesday and into the 80's at mid-week. This warm up will be rather short-lived as a backdoor cool front to cut the warmth some by later in the week and then a traditional cold front (i.e., moving from west-to-east) will bring cooler air here by the weekend.

After an unusually cold start to the day, sunshine will boost temperatures into the 60’s by later in the afternoon, but there will continue to be some gusty winds around the region. After a mainly clear and chilly night, clouds will increase on Saturday as low pressure heads this way from the south-central states and rain is likely from late tomorrow into early Sunday. Looking ahead to next week, a big time warm up is on the way for the eastern states as strong high pressure aloft will build eastward. Temperatures will likely climb into the 70’s by Tuesday afternoon in the Philly metro region and could very well flirt with the 80 degree mark by mid-week.
