One of the highlights of the Winter Outlook issued last month was the signal that there could be a quick start to winter in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US during the latter part of November and in of December. We have now reached the mid-point of November and there are some near-term signals that support the idea of a quick start to winter in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US. After a couple of chilly days to start this week, it’ll turn noticeably milder on Wednesday and Thursday, but then a strong cold front will usher in another colder-than-normal air mass for the end of the week and first half of the weekend. Looking ahead, there is the potential for Thanksgiving week to become cold and stormy perhaps leading to that quick start to the winter season in this part of the nation.

A “clipper-type” system will push into northern New England today and high pressure will build into the Mid-Atlantic region and take control of our weather into mid-week. Winds will become rather strong from a W-NW direction and temperatures will be confined to the mid-to-upper 40’s for afternoon highs. It remains quite chilly on Tuesday, but then becomes noticeably milder on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the next frontal system. Showers are possible late in the day on Thursday with the arrival of that next cold front and its passage will usher in colder air for the end of the week.

An energetic cold frontal system is working its way through the region this morning with residual showers and possible strong thunderstorms. Winds will pick up this afternoon as cooler, drier air arrives, but then another cold front will generate somewhat unsettled conditions on Saturday. As this next front arrives, the threat of showers will return as we begin the weekend and the winds on Saturday will become quite noticeable. A third cold front will arrive on Monday and bring with it the chance for some rain and/or snow shower activity. The passage of that third front will result in a reinforcing chilly air mass for the Mid-Atlantic region that will stick around into the mid-week.

A strong cold front will cross the region on Friday and there will be showers ahead of it from tonight into tomorrow morning. A strong thunderstorm or two can be mixed in and the rain can come down hard for brief spells. The breeze will pick up on Friday afternoon as cooler, drier air arrives and then another cold front can cause a few showers on Saturday along with windy conditions. Temperatures will be on a downward trend as we head through the weekend with afternoon highs in the 60’s on Friday replaced by the 50’s on Saturday afternoon and perhaps no better than 50 degrees on Sunday. Another cold front will approach the region on Sunday night and Monday and this frontal boundary zone may feature a wave of low pressure that can produce some rain and/or snow shower activity in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The first week of November averaged out to be quite a bit colder-than-normal in much of the eastern half of the nation, but the last couple of days have been quite pleasant for this time of the year and warmer-than-normal. It’ll remain warmer-than-normal in the Mid-Atlantic region into the day on Friday, but the passage of a strong cold front as the work week ends will usher in colder air for the upcoming weekend and it’ll set off an overall pattern change to colder-than-normal for much of the second half of the month. In fact, a reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive early next week and it could actually be accompanied by the first snow of the season in parts of the Mid-Atlantic region during Sunday night and Monday.

Temperatures dropped to near the freezing mark in many spots again late last night and there will be repeat performances late tonight and late Saturday night. The weekend will start off on the dry and chilly side and likely remain that stay way on Sunday as low pressure pushes no farther north than the North Carolina coastline. However, this system still has to be monitored during the next couple of days. A noticeable warm up is coming to much of the eastern half of the nation next week including right here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Looking ahead, there is the potential for a significant rain event in the eastern US at the end of next week. One final note...it is time once again to turn the clocks back an hour.
