A strong cool front will sweep through the region tonight and its passage will usher in a refreshing air mass for Friday, Saturday and Sunday with comfortable temperatures and noticeably lower humidity levels. In fact, temperatures should remain at pretty comfortable levels right through the first half of next week. In terms of precipitation, a residual shower is possible this morning, but the afternoon should feature clearing skies and generally rain-free weather. Late in the weekend, a disturbance over the Great Lakes will drop to the south and east and it can generate some shower activity for the Mid-Atlantic region late Sunday night and/or on Monday.

The Mid-Atlantic region is again suffering with high heat and humidity and temperatures are well up in the 90’s, but much relief is on the way for the end of the week and the upcoming weekend. The current air mass in the Mid-Atlantic region had its origins over the tropical Atlantic Ocean and the air mass headed our way for the late week and weekend will have its roots over northern Canada. Unfortunately, the transition from today’s high heat and humidity to the late week refreshing air mass will feature some shower and thunderstorm activity and some of that rainfall will be heavy at times with flash flooding on the table in some spots; especially, across Maryland, Virginia and the DC metro region.

Thunderstorms lit up the skies last night in much of the Mid-Atlantic region with vivid displays of lightning and the threat of showers and thunderstorms will continue today, tonight and tomorrow. A stalled-out frontal system will keep it unsettled around here into the weekend and any shower or thunderstorm that develops can produce heavy rainfall amounts in a short period of time….watch for localized flooding. The threat of rain will continue on Sunday, but the showers and storms on that day are likely to be less widespread than what is expected for the next couple of days. Copious amounts of clouds today and tomorrow will help to keep temperatures limited somewhat compared to Thursday - the hottest day of the week - but the humidity will remain at uncomfortably high levels right through the weekend.

After a sunny and warm day here at mid-week, southwesterly flow will increase tonight and begin funneling in a hotter and more humid air mass into the Mid-Atlantic region from the Tennessee Valley. In fact, temperatures on Thursday afternoon are likely to reach their peak for the week climbing to the middle and upper 90’s in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor…maybe even a flirtation with the 100 degree mark in some spots. In addition to the heat, dew point temperatures will climb into the lower 70’s tomorrow indicative of high humidity levels making for quite uncomfortable conditions and heat indices above 100 degrees. After the high heat and humidity of Thursday, attention will turn to an approaching frontal system from the northwest that will be a slow-mover. The front will stall on Friday in an environment that will be very moist and - with some support aloft associated with a long-wave trough - ingredients may come together for numerous showers and thunderstorms including the threat of downpours. In fact, this same front is likely to meander in the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend and additional pieces of energy will rotate through the upper-level trough keeping it unsettled with additional showers and thunderstorms on the table. Any shower or storm that does this form this weekend will also have the capability of producing heavy rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic similar to what can take place on Friday.

The week started off with below-normal temperatures in much of the Mid-Atlantic region thanks to plenty of cloud cover and a light low-level easterly breeze. As is often the case this time of year, the break in the heat will be rather short-lived. High pressure pushes off the east coast at mid-week and the peak in this week’s heat and humidity in the Mid-Atlantic region may come on Thursday after persistent southwesterly flow develops on the backside of the high. After that, the potential exists for some heavy rainfall from Thursday night into the upcoming weekend as a frontal system stalls in the region with weak wind flow aloft and a very moist overall environment.

It’ll turn out warmer today compared to Monday with the return of sunshine following the mostly cloudy start to the week. High pressure will stay in control through tomorrow night and then it pushes offshore on Thursday allowing for a surge in heat and humidity in the northeastern states. In fact, temperatures could soar well into the 90’s on Thursday afternoon and then a slow-moving front will approach from the northwest on Thursday night and Friday. This late week frontal system is likely to stall out near the coast and result in shower and thunderstorm activity from Friday into Saturday - some of which can be heavy at times.
