High pressure builds across the region today and will provide us with quite warm and rain-free conditions for the next couple of days. Another couple of frontal systems will approach the region late this week and during the early part of the weekend and there can be a shower or thunderstorm, but no widespread rain event is expected.

High pressure will then push into the area for the mid-week providing us with generally warm and rain-free conditions on both Wednesday and Thursday.

In fact, activity across the northern hemisphere as a whole has been below-normal as measured by a metric known as the “accumulated cyclone energy” or ACE. There are signs, however, that the lid is about to come off in the Atlantic Basin where a big-time increase in activity is increasingly likely over the next few weeks and beginning as early as this weekend over the Gulf of Mexico.

This system could help to spawn the formation of a low pressure over the western Atlantic which would enhance the chance of showers around here into mid-week and also keep a cool low-level flow of air well established. High pressure is likely to take back control later in the week and temperatures will remain on the comfortable side.
Read MoreA strong cool front passed through the region last night ushering in a refreshing air mass for today and the weekend with comfortable temperatures and humidity levels. In fact, it looks like temperatures will remain at comfortable levels through the first half of next week in the Mid-Atlantic region with highs generally in the 70’s. In terms of precipitation, a disturbance over the Great Lakes later this weekend will move in this direction and it can set off some shower activity around here late Sunday night and Monday. This system will help to generate low pressure nearby which can lead to more unsettled conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday to go along with those still comfortable temperatures.
One final note, the Perseid meteor shower peaks later tonight/early tomorrow…there will also be a full (super) moon to contend with in the southern sky.
