A strong cool front will pass through the region tonight and it’ll usher in a much more comfortable air mass for the second half of the week with high pressure building back into the Mid-Atlantic. The front will generate showers and thunderstorms later today into early tonight and some of the thunderstorms can be on the strong side; primarily, on the northwest side of I-95. Temperatures this afternoon will likely reach the 90 degree mark, but highs should be confined to the 80’s for the rest of the week. It’ll be somewhat breezy on Wednesday on the heels of the frontal system passage and noticeably less humid compared to both yesterday and today.

The tropics have come alive and there are multiple systems to monitor in coming days across the Atlantic Basin. This significant uptick in tropical activity follows a very quiet stretch during July and much of August, but the overall pattern is now more favorable for development and intensification as we get ready to cross into the month of September. The climatological peak of the tropical season in the Atlantic Basin is around the 10th of September at which time sea surface temperatures tend to reach their annual peaks.

There can be a round of showers and thunderstorms late tomorrow and early tomorrow night associated with the cold front and some of the thunderstorms can be on the strong side. Temperatures today and Tuesday will climb to or slightly above the 90 degree mark for afternoon highs and then hold in the 80’s for the remainder of the week following the frontal passage and there be lower humidity levels.
