7:00 AM | **Unsettled to start the new work week with more rain in the forecast...some of it can be heavy**

Paul Dorian

An unsettled weather pattern in the Mid-Atlantic region as we begin a new work week with a warm front moving through early today and then a cold front approaching the region later tonight. These surface frontal systems will be supported by a vigorous upper-level low pressure system and the end result could be more heavy rain from later today into tonight. High pressure will take control at mid-week providing us with nice weather for the remainder of the week with plenty of daily sunshine and comfortable temperatures.

12:30 PM | ***Recent dry spell ends with a significant rain event in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US…tropical update for both the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific***

Paul Dorian

It has been quite dry in recent weeks across the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US and this spell has changed in a big-time way during the last 24 hours with significant rainfall. The combination of a slow-moving frontal system and low pressure has resulted in as much as 8+ inches of rain in some spots and much the I-95 corridor from DC-to-Boston has been impacted. At mid-day, the heaviest of the rain is falling along coastal sections from New Jersey to southern New England, but flooding issues remain at inland locations. Residual showers are likely from later today into Wednesday and then nice weather is in store for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On the tropical scene, “Earl” is a strong tropical storm over the western Atlantic and moving slowly to the north. It will likely intensify into a hurricane over the next 24 hours or so - perhaps even a “major” - as it gradually turns to the northeast and likely avoiding any direct impact on the east coast. Meanwhile, the eastern Pacific features Hurricane “Kay” which could very well throw some moisture into southern California by the end of the week.

7:00 AM | ***Heavy rain event continues in the Mid-Atlantic...watch for flash flooding conditions***

Paul Dorian

The combination of a nearly stationary frontal system and multiples waves of low pressure is bringing a soaking rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic region – something that has been quite rare in recent weeks. The frontal boundary zone will act as a conduit for low pressure systems resulting in numerous showers and embedded thunderstorms for the area. Some of the rain will be heavy at times….watch for localized flash flooding as some spots can receive several inches of rain. A second and stronger cool front will slide through the region on Wednesday night paving the way for nice week late in the week and going into the upcoming weekend.

7:00 AM | *Warmer and more humid this weekend and becoming more unsettled...chance of showers and storms increases later Sunday and Monday*

Paul Dorian

Strong high pressure stays in control today and it’ll remain quite comfortable around here with low humidity levels. This same high pressure system will push off the eastern seaboard this weekend and a southwesterly flow of air will develop on its back side allowing for an increase in temperatures and overall humidity levels. A weak frontal system could spark some shower and thunderstorm activity in the Mid-Atlantic region from later Sunday into Labor Day Monday.

This same high pressure system will push off the eastern seaboard this weekend and a southwesterly flow of air will develop on its back side allowing for an increase in temperatures and overall humidity levels. A weak frontal system could spark some shower/thunderstorm activity in the Mid-Atlantic region from later Sunday into Labor Day Monday.

2:20 PM | ***Strong-to-severe thunderstorm threat later today/early tonight with arrival of cool front…noticeably less humid tomorrow and nice weather continues Thursday and Friday***

Paul Dorian

It has been quite dry in recent weeks across the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US and some rain would be a welcome break in this pattern. A strong cool front will indeed bring some rain to the area later today and tonight and some of the thunderstorms that develop can be on the strong-to-severe side with brief downpours and gusty winds. The cool front clears the coast by morning and tomorrow will become quite breezy and noticeably less humid than the steamy conditions of both today and yesterday. The nice weather will continue on Thursday and Friday as strong high pressure builds into the northeastern states during the latter part of the week.
