High pressure will be in control of the weather for the next couple of days with dry, moderately cold conditions. A strong (initial) storm will pull to the west of here later in the week resulting in milder weather and periods of rain from later Thursday into early Friday. There is a slight chance that a secondary storm forms off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early this weekend which is something to monitor in coming days.

Weak low pressure will push away from the Mid-Atlantic coastline this morning and clearing skies will set in by the mid-morning hours. High pressure takes control for the Tuesday-through-Wednesday time period and it’ll be rather quiet with moderately chilly conditions. Strong low pressure will impact the eastern third of the nation later this week and rain is likely to be the precipitation type in this region during this event.

It turns colder today and becomes windy and the weekend will feature much more seasonal conditions as well compared to recent days. Low pressure will push across the Midwest on Saturday and then reach the Mid-Atlantic region late Sunday. A period of snow and/or rain is likely here from late Sunday into early Monday and there even can be a small snow accumulation of a coating to an inch or two by early Monday morning.

The onslaught of Pacific Ocean storms into California will continue for at least the next 7-to-10 days with “off-the-chart” rainfall and snowfall amounts. After slamming into California, these storms have traveled across the country making for an overall active weather pattern across much of the US. In some cases, the impact has been large such as with the severe weather outbreak earlier this week in the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys and in other cases, systems have weakened considerably by the time they have reached the eastern states. We’ll examine upcoming threats in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US with small snow accumulations possible as early as Sunday night and perhaps the greatest chance for a strong storm system coming in the period of January 13-15th.

More seasonal air pushes into the Mid-Atlantic region for the weekend and we’ll have to monitor the movement of a low pressure system that will push through the Midwest on Saturday. High pressure shifts to the western Atlantic Ocean today and the result will be very mild conditions through tomorrow in the Mid-Atlantic region. A frontal system will impact the area for the next couple of days bringing us occasional rain showers or drizzle at times and patchy fog is also possible. This warm-up will reach its peak on Wednesday with temperatures likely climbing into the 60’s…potentially record-breaking highs in some spots. Colder and more seasonal conditions return by the end of the work week and low pressure off the coast could throw a couple of showers our way on Friday. As a result, temperatures will climb to near 50 degrees this afternoon and into the 50’s from Friday into early next week. The milder weather pattern will become wet on Saturday and rain is a good bet during the afternoon and evening hours. The new year should begin with some sunshine on Sunday and temperatures climbing well up into the 50’s.

As high pressure shifts to the southeastern states over the next few days, milder Pacific Ocean air will advance from west-to-east into the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result, a gradual warming trend will bring our temperatures to near 50 degrees by tomorrow afternoon and then into the 50’s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The milder weather pattern will become increasingly moist by the weekend and there will be a good chance of showers on Saturday to close out the month and the year of 2022. The weekend can close out quite mild on Sunday (New Year’s Day) with some sunshine and temperatures climbing to near the 60 degree mark.

The Arctic air mass that brought frigid temperatures to the region the past few days will retreat and milder air from the Pacific Ocean is headed in this direction. In fact, the warm up intensifies by the weekend so that temperatures around here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday should climb to the 50’s for highs. The warm up will become increasingly moist as well and rain is likely this weekend in much of the eastern US.
