7:15 AM | *Mission to Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, begins a year from now in October 2024…amazing work by Galileo 400+ years ago…send your name on the spacecraft*

Paul Dorian

Galileo turned his primitive telescope towards Jupiter in the early 1600’s and saw tiny specks of light with no discernable features. What a difference 400+ years can make as today’s backyard telescopes can resolve Europa’s disk surprisingly well. Europa is now considered one of the most complex and fascinating worlds in the solar system. Cracks, ridges, and chaotic terrain on the moon's icy crust may offer access to one of the largest oceans in the solar system--and a possible abode for aquatic life. NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft, due to launch one year from now in October 2024, will conduct a detailed reconnaissance of the moon's surface to help plan future missions including a lander and perhaps even a submarine.

7:00 AM | *A chilly start to the week, but a warming trend begins on Tuesday*

Paul Dorian

The week will start off on the chilly side in the Mid-Atlantic region, but much milder weather is on the way. High pressure will be in control of the weather for the next several days and there will be a noticeable warming trend. High temperatures today should be confined to near 60 degrees, but then they’ll climb well into the 70’s for the second half of the week.

7:00 AM | **Occasional rain later today and tonight...early morning lingering showers on Saturday, but not a washout...very windy later Saturday through Sunday**

Paul Dorian

Low pressure is strengthening off the east coast today and it will push to the north and reach a peak intensity over New England during the weekend. As a result, we will experience occasional rain later today and tonight, maybe an isolated thunderstorm or two, and then showers can linger into Saturday morning, but it will not turn out to be a total washout. Winds will increase during the day on Saturday as the low pressure system intensifies over New England and gusts past 40 mph are possible on Saturday night and Sunday to go along with quite cool conditions throughout the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US.

7:00 AM | *Weekend to begin a stretch of nice weather*

Paul Dorian

The threat of showers returns today as a system moves eastward across the middle of the country. By later tonight and Friday, an influx of moisture from the Gulf region will increase instability around here and the chance of thunderstorms will return. On Friday night, a cold front will slide across the area and the rain threat will diminish from west-to-east paving the way for a stretch of nice weather in the Tennessee Valley.
