7:00 AM | ***Threat of showers and thunderstorms increases by tonight and continues on Tuesday...winds to become a major factor from this evening into early Tuesday***

Paul Dorian

Strong upper-level low pressure will push towards the Tennessee Valley today and increase the chance of showers and thunderstorms by tonight and the threat of rain will continue on Tuesday. Some of the rain tonight can be heavy at times; especially, during possible strong thunderstorm activity. Winds will also become an important factor during this event with gusts to 50 mph on the table for tonight. Dry weather should return later tomorrow into Thursday with the holiday looking dry and cool with highs well up in the 50’s.

7:00 AM | **Finally...a soaking rainfall coming to the Mid-Atlantic region**

Paul Dorian

The big weather story of the week in the Mid-Atlantic region will be the soaking rain event that takes place from later tomorrow into early Wednesday as strong low pressure pushes into the Great Lakes region. It has been very dry in recent weeks, but this system should produce an inch or more of rain throughout the area by early Wednesday morning. It appeared last week that there would be an influx of unseasonably cold air into the Mid-Atlantic region on the back side of this storm, but that no longer appears to be the case. Instead, Turkey Day should be dry and cool with only slightly below-normal temperatures for this time of year. The weather becomes unsettled again at week’s end and for the upcoming weekend and it looks like it will be on the chilly side. One final note and for the Eagles fans out there, it looks like miserable weather tonight for the rematch with the Chiefs in Kansas City…windy, cold, periods of rain.

7:00 AM | *Dry, cool weekend coming to the Tennessee Valley...frost possible late tomorrow night*

Paul Dorian

It stays unsettled in the region today with the chance of afternoon showers as moist air pushes in on low-level southeasterly winds. A cold front moves through the area on Friday night and its passage will pave the way for a cool, but dry weekend in the northern part of Alabama. Widespread frost is possible late Saturday night/early Sunday morning as temperatures should drop to near the freezing mark.

7:00 AM | *It hits the airwaves this time of year and the "Wizard of Oz" tornado scene is still a classic 84 years after its release*

Paul Dorian

In a movie filled with memorable quotes, one of the shortest and simplest might have been “It’s a Twister!”, but it was part of a tornado scene that is still considered to be a classic more than eight decades later.  August 25, 1939 was the official release date of the “Wizard of Oz" which was the first movie to depict an authentic looking tornado using improbable “1930’s style” special effects. Through the decades, this all-time classic has inspired movie-goers and “weather weenies” alike with the scene of a twister lifting Dorothy’s home into the sky over rural Kansas farm land. This has become the time of the year in which many cable TV stations air this classic movie for new viewers who have never enjoyed it and for all of the old-timers out there who can watch it year after year after year (TBS, Saturday evening, November 18th, 6:30PM and again at 8:30PM).

6:30 AM | *Mild again today...showers likely tonight, but nothing significant*

Paul Dorian

It turned noticeably milder in the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday as high pressure shifted offshore and the mild conditions will continue today ahead of an incoming frontal system.  The front will set off some shower activity tonight, but – as has been the case in recent weeks – this will not be a significant rain event.  Colder air pushes into the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend on the heels of the frontal passage. Looking ahead, a strong storm system will head to the Midwest/Great Lakes during the first half of next week and likely result in rain and wind here from Tuesday into Wednesday - and this time the rainfall may be significant.
