6:30 AM | *Back to seasonably warm conditions this weekend, but overall humidity levels remain moderate*

Paul Dorian

High pressure to our north will remain in control of the weather as we end the work week and then slide off the east coast on Saturday. This repositioning of the high will open the door for seasonably warm air to push northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic region; however, overall humidity levels should remain moderate. The threat of rain will remain minimal around here during the next couple of days, but an upper-level low could increase the chances during the early part of next week.

11:20 AM | *Solar cycle 25 continues to head towards its maximum phase and it looks like this may be the most active month since the peak of solar cycle 23 in September 2001*

Paul Dorian

Solar cycle 25 began in late 2019 and is expected to continue through much of this decade with its maximum phase potentially being reached during the first half of 2025. This month of August has been very active in terms of the number of sunspots and it is quite likely to turn out to be the most active since solar cycle 23 peaked in September of 2001. Solar cycle 25 has exceeded most expectations in terms of the number of sunspots and is on pace to be of similar strength as solar cycle 23. The previous solar cycle, #24, was the weakest in more than a hundred years since solar cycle 14 peaked in January 1907.

7:00 AM | *An influx of higher humidity later today raises the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms*

Paul Dorian

Low-level flow from the southeast will bring in more humid air later today and this will increase the chances for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms after what has been a dry stretch of weather. Temperatures will remain in the comfortable 80’s for highs, but building high pressure ridging going into the weekend will lead to hotter weather across northern Alabama. In fact, afternoon highs should reach 90 degrees by early this weekend and then the middle 90’s are likely early next week.

6:30 AM | *Another very comfortable day in the Mid-Atlantic with high pressure remaining in control*

Paul Dorian

High pressure to our north will remain in control of the weather for the next couple of days and continue to anchor a very comfortable air mass for this time of year. The high pressure system shifts offshore by early this weekend and this repositioning will open the door for warmer air to move into the area from the southern states, but no sustained extreme heat is in sight. The chances for rain should be minimal around here for the next few days.

One final note, this cool shot we’re enjoying has been pretty impressive for August. The low temperature at Newark, NJ on Wednesday was 58 degrees. The last time the temperatures fell into the 50’s during the month of August in Newark was in 2008.

One final note, this cool shot we’re enjoying has been pretty impressive for August. The low temperature on Wednesday at Dulles Airport (IAD) was 50 degrees…the lowest temperature there for the entire month of August since 1998.

7:00 AM | *Overall weather pattern turns hot again this weekend and we could be looking at the mid-to-upper 90's by early next week*

Paul Dorian

A comfortable air mass that pushed into our area earlier this week will stay in place for another couple of days resulting in afternoon highs generally in the mid-to-upper 80’s. High pressure will shift to the east of here late in the week and this repositioning will open the door for hotter air to push in from southwest of here. In fact, temperatures should climb into the low-to-mid 90’s for highs on both weekend days and then perhaps into the middle and upper 90’s by the early part of next week.
