A cool and unsettled start to the new work week with rain showers possible across the metro region and snow across portions of the nearby higher elevation locations. In fact, some of the mountains can receive accumulating snow this morning on the order of a few inches in some spots. The winds will be a noticeable factor today throughout the region with gusts to 40 mph possible. The weather turns drier and warmer for Tuesday and Wednesday and then a mid-week cold frontal passage will bring colder temperatures back to the area for the late week.

After a stretch of chilly weather, temperatures will begin to climb as we end the work week with today’s highs back up in the low-to-mid 70’s. By the latter part of the weekend and the early part of next week, we’ll see afternoon high temperatures near or even slightly above the 80 degree mark and there should be plenty of sunshine on a daily basis.

A much colder air mass will push into the area today and the transition will come with occasional rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. In fact, it’ll turn cold enough by the early part of the weekend for some snow and there can be accumulations across the I-25 corridor and eastern plains. October can be a dry month in the Northeast US with the usual overall cooling down of the atmosphere, but this one has been pretty ridiculous. While tropical moisture has inundated the Tennessee Valley/Appalachians and Southeast US during the past couple of weeks, nary a drop has fallen in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor and there is not much reason for hope in the next week or so. Perhaps...just perhaps...there may be some decent rainfall here around the end of the month as a strong cold frontal system heads this way from central Canada.
