Today will be a nice day throughout the Mid-Atlantic region with plenty of sunshine and afternoon high temperatures well above normal for this time of year. A “back door” cold front will bring cooler air back to the region for tomorrow and Thursday as low-level winds switch to a north-northeast direction. (I refer to this kind of cold front as a “back door” since it “sneaks in” from our northeast instead of the more conventional approach from the west). Temperatures will surge to milder levels at the end of the week and it’ll stay quite mild through the upcoming weekend. The weekend becomes wet, however, with showers possible from late Saturday through the day on Sunday and some of that rain can be heavy at times.

The week started off quite mild and it should remain mild into the late week with temperatures later today and on Wednesday not far from the 70-degree mark. It turns much colder on Friday following the passage of a cold front and there can be rain and/or snow showers and strong winds to close out the week.

A “blood moon” total lunar eclipse will be visible across the U.S. from the night of Thursday, March 13th into the early morning hours of Friday, March 14th. This phenomenon occurs when the entire moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow in a color-shifting process that causes the lunar surface to appear red-orange; hence, the nickname “blood moon”. This kind of celestial event hasn’t happened since November 2022 and won’t happen again until March of 2026. It will be visible to the naked eye, but binoculars or a telescope can certainly add to the overall enjoyment of viewing the lunar eclipse…”totality” will last for about an hour.
