9:30 AM | ****Severe weather/tornado outbreak on Friday night in the Mississippi Valley…damaging winds gusts Ohio Valley/eastern US later Friday and Saturday associated with strong cold front****

Paul Dorian

Tornadoes are running at above-normal levels across the nation so far this season and there is the likelihood for another outbreak on Friday night centered on the Mississippi Valley region. In much the same manner as at the end of the last week, the atmosphere will become very unstable by Friday night in the Mississippi Valley region with a multitude of ingredients coming together including vigorous upper-level support, an intrusion of warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico ahead of a strong surface cold front, and an influx of cold, dry air from the north and west behind it. A similar weather pattern late last week resulted in an outbreak of tornadoes across Mississippi and Alabama that tragically resulted in the death of at least 26 people. The powerful cold front that will play a major role in the severe weather outbreak on Friday night will plow eastward through the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys and into the eastern states possibly resulting in damaging wind gusts of 50-60 mph in those sections of the country.

7:00 AM | **Cool, but sunny weather for the Nats home opener...strong wind gusts later tomorrow and Saturday associated with powerful cold front**

Paul Dorian

Following the passage of a cold front, it’ll be much cooler today for the Nationals home opener and despite plenty of sunshine, temperatures will likely peak in the low-to-mid 50’s – some ten degrees below the normal for this time of year. It turns much milder on Friday with possibility of late day showers ahead of the next cold front and temperatures can climb to near 70 degrees. Temperatures will climb to even higher levels on Saturday just ahead of the strong cold front perhaps reaching the middle 70’s, but there will be occasional showers and perhaps even a thunderstorm. The biggest factor from late tomorrow into Saturday will likely be the winds which will be quite strong and potentially damaging with gusts to 50 mph on the table. Despite some sunshine on Sunday, it’ll be noticeably cooler following the next cold frontal passage with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than Saturday and there may be a stiff NW wind as well.

7:00 AM | **A strong cold front heads this way for the weekend...powerful wind gusts on the table for later Friday and Saturday**

Paul Dorian

High pressure will stay in control of the weather through today resulting in plenty of sunshine and then a cold front slides through the region later tonight. Following the frontal passage, it’ll be unseasonably chilly on Thursday, but then it turns much milder on Friday with possible late day showers ahead of an incoming strong cold front.  Temperatures will climb to even higher levels on Saturday just ahead of the strong cold front perhaps reaching the low-to-mid 70’s, but occasional showers are likely and perhaps even a thunderstorm. The biggest factor late Friday and Saturday will likely be the winds which will be quite strong and potentially damaging with gusts to 50 mph or higher on the table. Despite some sunshine on Sunday, it’ll be noticeably cooler following the frontal passage with temperatures some 20 degrees lower than Saturday and there may be a stiff NW breeze as well.

7:00 AM | *Much warmer by Friday and Saturday ahead of a powerful cold front*

Paul Dorian

High pressure will edge into the Mid-Atlantic region from later today into Wednesday and then a cold front will slide through on Wednesday night. Following the frontal passage, it’ll be quite chilly on Thursday, but then it turns milder on Friday with the chance of PM showers.  The weekend will feature the passage of a strong cold front on Saturday night and there will be big temperature differences between Saturday and Sunday.  Windy and warm conditions are likely on Saturday ahead of a strong cold front with highs near 70 degrees and there are likely to be occasional showers…maybe even a strong thunderstorm. There is the potential on Saturday for damaging wind gusts as the strong cold front first approaches and then passes through the region. Despite some sunshine on Sunday, it’ll be noticeably cooler following the frontal passage with temperatures some 15-20 degrees lower than on Saturday and there will likely be a stiff NW breeze as well.

10:30 AM | *This Thursday is Opening Day for Major League Baseball and it’ll be quite chilly in the Northeast US/Mid-Atlantic and across California…some big time rule changes this year*

Paul Dorian

Major League Baseball’s Opening Day for all thirty teams is this Thursday, March 30th and it looks like it may be quite chilly in two parts of the nation with below-normal temperatures for several games. One region that is likely to feature colder-than-normal conditions is the Northeast US/Mid-Atlantic following the passage of a mid-week cold frontal system and a second region is the western US where it has been quite chilly for weeks compared to normal.  In the Northeast US/Mid-Atlantic region, home openers include the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and the Washington Nationals. California will host three opening games on Thursday in Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego and temperatures are likely to be below-normal all the way down to the Mexican border. This will be an interesting year for big league baseball as there will be major changes to the game including the restriction of the defensive shift, bigger bases, and – for the first time ever – the usage of a time clock.

7:00 AM | *A cool start to the week with a shower threat*

Paul Dorian

After a brief visit by high pressure to close out the weekend, a fast-moving low pressure system will bring us occasional showers into the evening hours. Temperatures are likely to be confined to the upper 50’s for highs today and for the next few days as well. It turns much warmer later in the week and the weekend could actually start off with temperatures in the 70’s; however, it’ll be very windy on Saturday with showers likely as a strong cold front approaches the region.

7:00 AM | *Turning cooler today with occasional showers...maybe a thunderstorm or two...sunshine to return on Sunday*

Paul Dorian

A cold front slipped through the region in the overnight hours and today will feature occasional showers as was the case on Thursday, but it’ll become noticeably cooler with the development of a northerly low level wind. There can be a thunderstorm or two as well through tonight and some of the rain during the next 24 hours can be heavy at times. The unsettled weather will continue on Saturday as low pressure pushes along a nearly stationary frontal boundary zone and it’ll bring more rain to the area and maybe another thunderstorm or two.  High pressure pushes in for the second half of the weekend and sunshine should return booting temperatures to slightly milder levels by Sunday afternoon.

11:30 AM | ****Active pattern continues…severe weather outbreak…flooding rains...weekend snow threats Upper Midwest/interior NE US…possible storms near both coasts by next mid-week****

Paul Dorian

We are now a few days into spring season and the active weather pattern that lasted through much of the winter across the nation looks like it can continue well into the month of April. California was pounded by yet another storm on Wednesday that the state brought heavy rain, significant snow, and even a rare tornado to the Los Angeles metro region. Some severe weather is possible later Thursday across Texas and Oklahoma, but it is even more likely from later Friday into Friday night across the Lower Mississippi Valley.  Meanwhile, in the colder climate of the northern US, there can be accumulating snow this weekend in the Upper Midwest and then upstate New York/northern New England.  And finally, while still in the speculation phase, this active weather pattern may result in strong new storms near both coasts by the middle of next week.

7:00 AM | *An unsettled pattern into the weekend with the threat of showers today, tonight, Friday and Saturday...a few thunderstorms possible as well*

Paul Dorian

The next few days will be unsettled in the DC metro region with a frontal system acting as the catalyst for occasional showers today, tonight, tomorrow and on Saturday as well and there can be a few thunderstorms along the way.  It becomes very mild today with highs in the 70’s, but following a late night frontal passage, temperatures will drop to noticeably cooler levels for the bulk of the day on Friday. The front will settle just to the south of here and its boundary zone will act as a conduit for low pressure to move through early this weekend. Once the low pressure system passes by to our northeast on Saturday night, drier will push into the region to close out the weekend and sunshine should return on Sunday.
