An active couple of days is in store for the Mid-Atlantic region with scattered showers and thunderstorms today and more widespread showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow. There is a wave of upper-level energy setting off some powerful and slow-moving thunderstorms at mid-day along the Delaware River region of the Mid-Atlantic and an even stronger system will likely generate numerous showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow into tomorrow night. Any of these thunderstorms can produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding given the well-saturated grounds. Looking ahead, a beautiful air mass for August will arrive on Friday and provide comfortable weather conditions for the weekend.

Humidity will rise today ahead of a weak frontal system and then a stronger front approaches the area late tomorrow. As a result, the chance for showers and storms will increase this afternoon and evening and then likely reach a peak later Wednesday/early Wednesday night when there will be the threat for strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Weak high pressure to our north will be in control of the weather today and then a couple of fronts will head our way over the next few days. Humidity will rise on Tuesday ahead of the initial frontal system and then a stronger front approaches the area late Wednesday. As a result, the chance for showers and storms will be small tonight, increase on Tuesday afternoon/evening, and then likely reach a peak late Wednesday when there will be a threat for strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. After a generally rain-free day today, there is the threat for showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and any storm can produce some heavy rainfall. The early part of next week may turn out rain-free as the front slips a bit farther to the south. Temperatures over the next few days should be confined to the 80’s for afternoon highs.

The Mid-Atlantic region has experienced generally rain-free conditions over the past several days, but heavy downpours are on the table for this afternoon and evening. A cool front is edging this way and the result will be slow-moving showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Any slow-moving shower or storm can produce heavy rainfall amounts in a relatively short period of time and some of the storms can reach severe levels potentially producing damaging wind gusts. Given the still well-saturated grounds in the Mid-Atlantic region, any heavy rainfall can result in flash flooding conditions.

A cool front will inch across the area later today and tonight and it will become the focus region for slow-moving showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region. Any storm that forms later today can become strong-to-severe with the potential of heavy downpours and damaging wind gusts. The front will stall out south of here on Thursday and its proximity will keep us unsettled late this week and during the weekend. Temperatures will not be as warm today as they were during the past couple of days and highs will likely hold in the 80’s right through the upcoming weekend. Elsewhere, the eastern Atlantic is looking quite active and we may have a tropical storm to monitor in the western Atlantic around this time next week.

Today is likely to be the hottest day of the week with high temperatures in the low-to-mid 90’s along with plenty of sunshine and humid conditions. The chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase later today and tonight, and then rise even further on Wednesday as a cool front approaches from the northwest. Any thunderstorm that forms over the next 24-36 hours can produce heavy rainfall at times. This front will stall out later in the week just to the south of here and this will keep us unsettled for much of the second half of the week. After reaching the 90’s this afternoon, temperatures will likely be confined to 90 or below for highs during the remainder of the week.

The week starts off with high pressure off the east coast, but still in control of our weather and we’ll have plenty of sunshine today with humid and very warm conditions. After another sunny, hot and humid day on Tuesday, there can be a few showers and thunderstorms around tomorrow night, but an even better chances comes on Wednesday as a cold front arrives. That front will stall out in the general vicinity and we'll be quite unsettled and not as hot for much of the second half of the week.

The Mid-Atlantic region will continue to experience good drying conditions for the next few days as high pressure dominates the scene in the eastern third of the nation. Temperatures and humidity will remain quite comfortable today, but will creep up this weekend as a southwesterly flow of air develops in the region. There is no extreme heat and humidity in sight, however, like that which we experienced last weekend.
