7:00 AM | *Refreshing air mass for the weekend bodes well for the viewing of the Perseid meteor shower*

Paul Dorian

A secondary cool frontal system is sweeping through the Mid-Atlantic region this morning and it’ll usher in a comfortable air mass for the upcoming weekend. Humidity levels will drop noticeably later today and both days of the weekend should feature plenty of sunshine, comfortably warm conditions, and low humidity. The next front of note looks like it’ll arrive by the middle of next week with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms from later Tuesday into Wednesday. One final note, the Perseid meteor showers peaks on Monday night, but conditions should be quite good this weekend for viewing (https://www.perspectaweather.com/blog/2019/8/5/1230-pm-perseid-meteor-shower-is-already-underwaypeaks-early-next-week).

Both Saturday and Sunday should feature plenty of sunshine, low humidity and high temperatures generally confined to the lower 80’s.

11:20 AM | **Strong-to-severe thunderstorm threat later today in the I-95 corridor**

Paul Dorian

An active weather pattern is setting up for the I-95 corridor for later today/early tonight extending all the way from the Carolinas to New England.  There is an approaching vigorous wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere that will combine with diurnal heating and an advancing surface frontal boundary zone to destabilize the atmosphere over the next few hours and the result will likely be widespread showers and thunderstorms between about 2 and 9 PM in the I-95 corridor.  Any storm that forms later today can produce torrential rainfall, flash flooding, and perhaps even damaging wind gusts. Looking ahead, a second frontal system will pass through the region early Friday and it’ll be followed by a much more comfortable air mass for the weekend with noticeably lower humidity levels.

A secondary cold front will arrive early Friday and it’ll usher in a more refreshing air mass for the NYC metro region that will stay around this weekend. The drier air mass headed our way for the weekend will be anchored by strong high pressure to the north and west of here.

1:45 PM | *An active couple of days in the Mid-Atlantic region*

Paul Dorian

An active couple of days is in store for the Mid-Atlantic region with scattered showers and thunderstorms today and more widespread showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow.  There is a wave of upper-level energy setting off some powerful and slow-moving thunderstorms at mid-day along the Delaware River region of the Mid-Atlantic and an even stronger system will likely generate numerous showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow into tomorrow night.  Any of these thunderstorms can produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding given the well-saturated grounds.  Looking ahead, a beautiful air mass for August will arrive on Friday and provide comfortable weather conditions for the weekend.

7:00 AM | *No extended hot weather in sight...refreshing air mass likely here for the weekend*

Paul Dorian

Weak high pressure to our north will be in control of the weather today and then a couple of fronts will head our way over the next few days. Humidity will rise on Tuesday ahead of the initial frontal system and then a stronger front approaches the area late Wednesday. As a result, the chance for showers and storms will be small tonight, increase on Tuesday afternoon/evening, and then likely reach a peak late Wednesday when there will be a threat for strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Looking ahead, there is a pretty good chance for a nice refreshing air mass to arrive in the Mid-Atlantic region for the upcoming weekend anchored by high pressure to our north and west.

After a generally rain-free day today, there is the threat for showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and any storm can produce some heavy rainfall. The early part of next week may turn out rain-free as the front slips a bit farther to the south. Temperatures over the next few days should be confined to the 80’s for afternoon highs.

7:00 AM | *Front edges to the south of here today allowing for noticeable improvement*

Paul Dorian

A cool front will stall out south of here later today and it may lead to unsettled weather conditions around here as we head into the weekend. Temperatures should be confined to the 80’s for afternoon highs during the next few days.

1:25 PM | ***Heavy downpours this afternoon/evening with strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity...tropical update***

Paul Dorian

The Mid-Atlantic region has experienced generally rain-free conditions over the past several days, but heavy downpours are on the table for this afternoon and evening.  A cool front is edging this way and the result will be slow-moving showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.  Any slow-moving shower or storm can produce heavy rainfall amounts in a relatively short period of time and some of the storms can reach severe levels potentially producing damaging wind gusts.  Given the still well-saturated grounds in the Mid-Atlantic region, any heavy rainfall can result in flash flooding conditions.
