Roads are mainly just wet early today, but watch for slippery spots as temperatures are still near the freezing mark in many areas. Overall conditions will improve in the region later in the day as temperatures climb above the freezing mark and they’ll peak near 40 degrees this afternoon. In addition to the lingering freezing rain/rain, winds will be an important factor today gusting up to 25 mph or so. High pressure takes control this weekend with cold conditions on Saturday and less harsh weather on Sunday. Temperatures tumbled in the overnight hours in the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold frontal system and setting the stage for a wintry mess from today into early Friday. In fact, temperatures dropped nearly 40 degrees in the I-95 corridor from the lower 70’s on Wednesday afternoon to the lower 30’s by early today as high pressure strengthened into southeastern Canada. From this location, this high pressure system will act as an anchor and a source region for cold air during the next 24 hours – a classic “cold air damming” pattern for the northeastern part of the nation. This kind of an atmospheric setup is setting the stage for mixed precipitation today and an icy buildup later tonight for many in the Mid-Atlantic region and there will likely be an impact on the Friday AM commute.

Much colder air has moved into the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold frontal system and moisture will head this way in two different waves. During the day, any mixed precipitation is likely to be scattered and on the lighter side in areas to the north of the PA/MD border, but as a stronger low pressure system heads our way this evening, the precipitation shield will expand and intensify across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southeastern New York. Snow is likely to break out around here in the evening and it could accumulate up to a few inches before a transition to sleet. By late tonight, the sleet is likely to transition to freezing rain and there can be an ice buildup of up to a tenth of an inch in the N/W suburban locations. Temperatures today should make it into the 50’s and they’ll remain on the mild side on Tuesday, but it’ll become quite wet as well with a decent rainfall on the way from later tomorrow into tomorrow night. The warmest day of the week is likely to be on Wednesday ahead of the next cold front with temperatures likely to climb well up in the 60’s, but then big temperatures changes will take place by Thursday. Looking beyond the possible ice event later Thursday, numerous signs point to a continuation of winter weather conditions in the eastern states as we wind down the month of February and then flip over to March. Temperatures will drop through the day following the early day highs and clouds will give way to sunshine for the afternoon hours. After a cold and more tranquil night, Saturday will feature a reinforcing shot of cold air and this frontal passage will be supported by a strong wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere. As a result, there will be snow shower activity on Saturday in parts of the Mid-Atlantic/NE US and perhaps even a few isolated snow squalls.
