Temperatures on Wednesday afternoon were in record territory for the date in much of the Mid-Atlantic region and, in some cases, October monthly high temperature records were threatened or broken. In the overnight hours, however, a dramatic change in air mass has taken place in areas north of the PA/MD border as a back-door cool front dropped north-to-south across the region. Temperatures this morning across the northeast US were as much as 25 degrees colder compared to yesterday morning at the same time and they are likely to go nowhere over the next few hours in places like Philly and NYC. The cool air sticks around into the weekend and then it’ll turn a bit warmer early next week and that warm up could be associated with a significant rain event in the I-95 corridor.

It has turned dramatically cooler today on the heels of an overnight frontal passage and skies will remain cloudy with occasional showers. Temperatures have likely already peaked for the day and will tend to drop slowly over the next few hours. A secondary cool front will usher in a reinforcing cool air mass for tomorrow and Saturday and temperatures by early Saturday morning are likely to be at the lowest levels so far this season in the Mid-Atlantic region. It’ll turn a bit warmer on Sunday and Monday and there may be a significant rain event along the I-95 corridor during the Sunday night/Monday time period with the arrival of another frontal system.

Today will be the hottest day of the week and quite unusually warm for the early part of October. In fact, record highs are possible in some spots later today as temperatures make a run to the 90 degree mark. It’ll turn much cooler on Thursday following the passage of a back door cool frontal system in the overnight hours and then a secondary cool front will usher in a reinforcing cool air mass for Friday and Saturday. It’ll turn warmer again early next week and there may even be a decent rain event along the I-95 corridor during the Sunday night/Monday time period - a rarity in recent weeks.

High pressure pushes off the coast today and this will open the door for much warmer air to push in from our southwest. Temperatures should climb back to the 80 degree mark this afternoon and then make a run at 90 degrees on Wednesday – perhaps even challenging the record for the date in some spots. Much cooler air arrives on Thursday and Friday and it stays cool going into the upcoming weekend. There will be another frontal system approaching us late tomorrow and it could produce some scattered shower and thunderstorm activity from later tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night. Strong high pressure ridging to our north will provide us with another comfortable day here in the Philly metro region. It’ll turn noticeably warmer this weekend, however, as the high pressure system shifts offshore and a low-level flow develops out of the southwest. High temperatures on both weekend days will reach the 80’s and there should be plenty of sunshine around on each day. A cool front will arrive on Monday and it could cause some scattered shower activity late in the day or at night with another comfortable air mass to follow on Tuesday after the frontal passage.
