7:00 AM | *Comfortable temperature pattern continues in the Mid-Atlantic*

Paul Dorian

Comfortable temperatures for the early part of August will remain in the Mid-Atlantic region for much of the work week after a nice start to the new month. Moisture will be abundant along the Gulf coastal region over the next couple of days and some of it will try to push northward later in the week likely reaching as far north as the southern part of the Delmarva Peninsula. Elsewhere, the tropical scene has been quiet in the Atlantic Basin for several weeks, but there are signs that activity will ramp up in coming days.

1:00 PM | *Atlantic Basin tropical activity likely to ramp up next ten days or so after an extended quiet stretch*

Paul Dorian

The temperature pattern across the US during the month of July was pretty close-to-normal (+1.1 degrees F) and there was an extended quiet stretch in terms of tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. In fact, there has not been a single named storm in the tropical Atlantic since “Elsa” which came ashore as a tropical storm in northwestern Florida on July 7th. Several signals point to an end to the quiet phase in the Atlantic Basin. In fact, it is not unusual for tropical activity to pick up during the month of August as sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Basin continue to climb towards their usual early-to-mid September peak. In addition, the unfolding upper-level height pattern across North America will likely become more favorable for a pick up in tropical activity and an increased threat to the US. Specifically, high pressure ridging will build and intensify in coming days over the Northeast US and southeastern part of Canada – often a precursor to tropical activity that can impact the Gulf of Mexico or the east coast of the US.

7:00 AM | *Comfortable conditions for much of the week as August gets off to a nice start*

Paul Dorian

A cold front is pushing through the region this morning and a reinforcing comfortable air mass for early August will move into the Mid-Atlantic as we begin a new work week. In fact, the overall weather pattern will result in below-normal temperatures in much of the eastern half of the nation for much of this week with an upper-level low stationed over the northeastern quadrant. There will be a lot of moisture across the Gulf coast and southeast US in coming days and some of this may try to push northward later in the week.

7:00 AM | *Tornadoes strike Bucks County late yesterday upon the arrival of powerful cold front...damage in full evidence this morning to be assessed by the NWS*

Paul Dorian

Multiple tornadoes ripped through Bucks County late yesterday and Mercer County in New Jersey upon the arrival of a powerful cold front and that system is now clearing the coastline. Damage on the ground in Bucks County is quite apparent early this morning (e.g., Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem Township) and will be assessed further by the National Weather Service to determine the strength and longevity of yesterday’s tornadic activity. High pressure builds into the region as we end the work week with a much more comfortable air mass in place including the lowering of humidity and the weekend will actually start off with temperatures in the 50’s in most places – well below the norm for the last day of July. Another cold front could produce more showers and storms here late in the weekend and its early week passage will usher in more comfortable air for the bulk of next week – the first full week of August.

10:45 AM | ***Severe weather threat later today/early tonight in the Mid-Atlantic to include hail, heavy rain and even isolated tornadoes…very comfortable conditions to follow***

Paul Dorian

The overall weather pattern is evolving to one that will bring very comfortable air to the Mid-Atlantic region as we end the month of July and begin the month of August, but it is going to be rough going to get to that point as there is the threat for severe weather later today into early tonight. A complex of severe thunderstorms blasted through Wisconsin in the overnight hours in a northwest-to-southeast direction and this line has held together and will push into the Mid-Atlantic region later in the day. There is the potential this afternoon and evening for severe weather in the Mid-Atlantic region to include all the weather parameters from hail-to-heavy rain-to-isolated tornadoes. Following the passage of a strong cold front, comfortable air with low humidity will push in on Friday riding in on stiff NW winds and the comfortable weather pattern will last through much of next week as well – the first full week of August.

Paul Dorian

The overall weather pattern is evolving to one that will bring very comfortable air to the Philly metro region as we end the month of July and begin the month of August, but it may a rough time getting to that point with severe weather a threat later today and early tonight. A complex of severe thunderstorms blasted through Wisconsin in the overnight hours from northwest-to-southeast and this line will play a key role later today in the Mid-Atlantic region. Indeed, there is the potential for severe weather to include all the parameters from hail-to-heavy rain-to-tornadoes. Following the passage of a strong cold frontal system, very comfortable air will push in on Friday and the comfortable weather pattern will last through much of next week as well – the first full week of August.

2:30 PM | ***Complex of severe thunderstorms tonight Upper Midwest…severe weather threat in the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday…very comfortable conditions follow for the end of July/beginning of August***

Paul Dorian

The overall weather pattern is evolving to one that will bring very comfortable air to the Mid-Atlantic region as we end the month of July and begin the month of August, but it may a rough time getting there with severe weather a threat on Thursday. A complex of severe thunderstorms will blast through Wisconsin in the overnight hours from northwest-to-southeast and this line will play a key role on Thursday in the Mid-Atlantic region. There is the potential later tomorrow for severe weather in the Mid-Atlantic region to include all the parameters from hail-to-heavy rain-to-tornadoes. Once the cold frontal system passes through the region, quite comfortable air will push in on Friday riding along on stiff northwest winds and the comfortable weather pattern will last through much of next week as well – the first full week of August.

7:00 AM | *Strong storm possible on Thursday...comfortable air for Friday/Saturday*

Paul Dorian

A couple of cold frontal systems will play a role in our weather during the next several days and the end result in the Mid-Atlantic region is quite likely to be some pretty comfortable air for the end of July and the beginning of August. The first front will arrive later tomorrow and it could bring some strong thunderstorm activity into the area and then comfortable air will follow for Friday and Saturday. A second front should arrive early next week and it too should usher in some pretty comfortable air for much of the first week of August.

12:15 PM | *July has been a nearly normal month for temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic...transition into August will feature additional comfortable air masses...coastal storm next week?*

Paul Dorian

While much of the nation from the Northern Plains to the Pacific Northwest has experienced hotter-than-normal weather this month, the Mid-Atlantic region has enjoyed a nearly normal month in terms of overall temperatures. In fact, it appears the last couple of days of July can include some below-normal temperatures in much of the Mid-Atlantic region and the first week of August could turn out to be cooler-than-normal in much of the eastern US. In addition to the potential for cooler-than-normal temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region next week, we’ll have to watch out for the possibility of a coastal storm.

7:00 AM | *90 degrees again this afternoon, but a downward trend on the way*

Paul Dorian

The overall weather pattern across the nation over the next few days will feature upper-level ridging centered over the Northern Rockies and an upper-level low over southeastern Canada. As a result, it’ll be hotter-than-normal from the Northern Plains to the Pacific NW, but northwest flow aloft over the Northeast US will prevent any extended period of heat around here. In fact, temperatures should trend downward in the I-95 corridor later this week to pretty comfortable levels for the end of July. Looking ahead, there are signs for pleasant air to push into much of the eastern half of the nation next week as we begin the month of August.
